Thanks Dave

I am surprised at the amount of tourneys returning LESS than 85%...........what a rip-off.

The Poker Palace and the Fiesta the only two with 100% payback.

The Bellagio and the Golden Nugget sponsor the nicest tourneys in the Valley on a weekly basis...........sizable entry fees coupled with very low house takeouts.

GreenD---Would like to hear your thoughts on the house rake in tourneys.

Over 20% is highway robbery in my opinion........and even think that is to high.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Fish,
Basically the house would need to take about 10 bucks a person just to break even on expenses.
There would be no difference for me running a $40 tourney or a $100 tourney as far as the house take. The problem is you can't get the volume at most places if you go past a certain threshold (around $50).
We used to offer $100 tourneys where we took $9 out for the house and $40 tourneys where we took $8. The $40 tourneys had 3x to 4x people because of the buy-in. Most people don't even care to ask how much the house takes.

There are some places that take upwards of 25% for their tourneys, and believe it or not they are some of the best attended in town (the Sahara comes to mind for example).

All of our tourneys we do take $10 out of the $50 buy-in and we don't take anything out of the re-buys in our single re-buy tournament. That lowers the house take by a few percent. If we took any less, we'd pretty much lose money on every tournament we hold.

We ARE losing money on the $500 buy-in at the end of this month. That is because we are taking NOTHING for the house. We'll make it up in other areas, obviously, but I know of no other tournaments that do this. Of course, if it's not well attended I doubt we would need to do it again.

I hope that answers your questions and will be glad to answer any others anyone may have.

Boy, online gaming sure does look strong with their numerous freerolls, guaranteed touneys that produce 100%+ payback, and regular 5% house-cut.

GD- I know the percentage of skill players in a tourney make a huge difference, but what would you as a player consider your cut-off point to NOT PLAY IN A TOURNEY?

The Hard Rock here in Tampa takes a 20% cut and I think that is to much............15% is about my personal cut-off.

Obviously the better you match-up with your competition, the more you can cut the house some slack.

Personally, a weak field would take precedence over a house cut. I can tell you in our daily tourneys with 40 people, about 30-35 have NO clue. So, therefore, the house edge can be overcome.

It's a little more difficult to gauge the competition online, but obviously a brick and mortar poker room cannot compete with an online casino.
The main reason being overhead.

That being said, most low level tourney players want the experience of playing live, "like I seen on TV", and don't really care about what the house gets. They are completely oblivious to it.

Honestly, I rarely play live games for a few reasons.
1) Even though I work in the business, I don't relish the thought at chatting it up with poker players at a table.

2) Online offers me a better game, at MY convenience.

3) I simply know too many people and don't want to create ill will amongst my peers or competitors.
