I have seen this stat thru the years,the Super Bowl Champions always start slow covering games the following season...And, it makes sense as the oddsmaker will adjust as public perception is high on last years champion...

Lets see is we can`t get 3-1 fading the Bucs!

Over the past 14 seasons the defending Super Bowl champs have gone 20-34-2 ATS their first four games the year after winning it all. When favored, they went 16-32-1 ATS. As dogs, they have finished 4-2-1 ATS over that period.

I think this stat is misleading.The super bowl champ should do okay in the FIRST game out of the gate, expecially if they are dogs. Last year they made New England a dog in their first game of the year, and the Patriots cleaned up.Beware of giving points to the Champ.
