God LSU backers just got screwed

A) The Iowa QB clearly fumbled the ball when they were on the 5. Just when think I've figured out instant replay rules, something like that happens.

B) That last play in the end zone where Iowa illegally batted the ball forward should've been a safety right? Penalty was committed in the EZ. Should've won by 9.

I didn't see the fumble, but i was about to start a thread about the illegally batted ball. Since the penalty occurred in the end zone, I believe it is a safety

I don't think the officiating crew thought twice about it, they just ran off the field

I believe it was mentioned post-game that Miles declined the penalty.

don't think you can decline a safety, but I'm not 100% certain

and if he declined a safety, I think he knows his boosters would be upset

I'm not sure but I don't think you can decline a penalty that occurs in the EZ.

The ball was touched by LSU on the punt. Hit the guys hand. Iowa could have done anything they wanted at that point as the ball was illegally touched.

You have confused me beyond belief. A player from the kicking team is the first player to touch the ball on probably 50% of all punted balls.

And that's called illegal touching and that's where the play is dead. That's why if it hits the kicking team, a returner can just run in there with out caring trying to grab the ball and run.

I agree with #1 but that is how it is defined in the rule book. And does not necessarily mean a penalty has to be thrown. It's just the word they use for when the player touches it. And it kind of makes sense since the ball is spotted wherever the kicking team touches it unless the kick return team returns it.

2) You have to watch the replay again, the ball comes down and bounces off an LSU player.

This is the only video I can find. But if you watch at around 2:15-2:25. You'll see the ball comes down and hits the LSU player on the helmet or shoulder pads. Not sure what it hits, but you can see it.

What is illegal about a punt coverage team running down and downing the football after the punt stops rolling given the returning team elects not to return the ball?

I watched AK and I don't see where the LSU coverage guy touched the ball. As a matter of fact, if it is touched, doesn't the ref throw a beanbag down?

No, I don't see it hitting him in the head. Let's say it did though, what prevents the return team from picking it up and running? What is the rule?

So I guess if it's illegal touching, a flag should be thrown? That makes zero sense to me.

But, I don't trust anything off wikipedia either so that rule may or may not be true.
