Ohio State @ #22 Miami
Line: Miami -8

Miami comes into the game with a 4-1 mark with the lone loss being a 13 point loss to #2 Connecticut. Miami has looked very convincing in all four of their victories, all cupcakes for the most part. Ohio State comes into the game 3-0 with no worthy opponents played. However it should be noted that Ohio State scored just 59 points vs. Samford who gave up 78 in their opener vs. Belmont. Also they only beat a bad Bowling Green team by 4, I know it is in-state but that is a game you win by double digits if you expect to contend in the Big 10.

The Canes are coming off of one of the best years the program has ever seen with an NCAA tournament victory vs. Saint Marys and just a 3 point loss in the 2nd round to Texas. The Canes fans are excited about this program that seems to be on the up rise and has lost just 12ppg since last year. They are lead by G Jack McClinton who can shoot the lights out and thrives in clutch situations. He is probably the best shooter in the ACC which is really saying something. They have an energetic front court with Dwayne Collins and Jimmy Graham. Graham is not afraid to lay his body on the line and take a charge and is also a key rebounded and shot blocker for the Canes. Collins can take over a game as last year if you remember he put up 26 points vs. #5 Duke. If he gets going it will be all over for the Bucks early.

Ohio State on the other hand is a program on the decline, after going to the title game in 06 with Bucks didn’t even make the field of 65 last year. After not making the tournament last year they then lost Jamar Butlers 15ppg, Ontello Hunters 10ppg, and Kosta Koufos 14.5ppg. They did bring in McDonalds All-American C B.J. Mullens but he still hasn’t shown that he is capable of handling a dominant inside player like Collins. Ohio State does have depth in the front court but they still haven’t had anyone step up as a true scorer who can take over a game and make the play when necessary. This team still has some maturing to do in my mind.

Miami should set the tone early. I’m taking Miami -4 in the first half to avoid the backdoor job. Will evaluate at the half.

Clemson @ Illinois
Line: Illinois -1

Clemson is heading into this game 7-0 with wins against all bottom-feeding teams. They struggled @ Charlotte and vs. Temple in which they one those games by a combined 4 points. Illinois comes in 6-0 this year with notable wins vs. Kent State and @ Vanderbilt. Two tough teams that I think both would give Clemson a run for their money.

Going to make this one short and sweet, Illinois is waiting for six top recruits to arrive in 09 and 10 and until then they are going to continue to struggle. They have no true identity and no leadership. They will not be able to handle the Clemson defense that has harassed many teams that are much better then Illinois currently is. True they lost a lot down low with the losses of Hammonds and Mays but the backcourt is where the menacing defense thrives and that is still intact. Look for Illini to turn it over a lot and Clemson to control the tempo and play with more energy. I think they win by 8.

#4 Duke @ #10 Purdue
Line: Purdue -2.5

Duke, the most well coached team in the country, is heading into Purdue for probably the biggest home game that I can remember for Purdue. Duke has versatile shooters and defenders all over the floor and play hard from whistle to whistle. Every single player on the team is willing to draw contact and take the rough charges. This is what is the difference in this game in my opinion. We all know Duke gets the benefit of the doubt on most calls no matter where they play and have been superb at getting into the bonus all year. This team is very deep with Singler, Henderson, Scheyer, and even Paulus who seems to have moved into the #2 point guard role.

The thing about this game is that Duke has played in games bigger then this before and will not be intimidated by a rabid Purdue crowd. Purdue on the other hand is a younger team with less experience. I do think they are going to be very good this year and I do realize that they only got beat by Oklahoma because Oklahoma dominated the paint but do not forget that Purdue shot the lights out from 3. That is going to be a tough task vs. a good defensive team in Duke. Last year Purdue struggled vs. teams with 4 good ball handlers who could beat them off the dribble, well this Duke team will have 5 good ball handlers on the court most of the time.
The bottom line is Hummel, Moore, and Grant are going to hit their shots but Duke is going to beat this Purdue defense off the dribble and get Purdue into foul trouble. Duke has the potential to take the crowd out of it quick although it would surprise me if they did. I like Duke to win it outright by 6.

Central Michigan @ Marquette
Line: Marquette -23

Marquette is coming off of a very good year where they went to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament and lost by just 1 to Stanford in a game I will not soon forget. Marquette has Dominic James, Jerel McNeal, Lazar Hayard and Pat Hazel all returning who contributed 52ppg last year combined. Maquette has the balance to score inside and outside and will kill you when they decide to drive to the hoop.

Central Michigan on the other hand is a team with no identity yet. They have no true point guard who is able to control the floor and they graduated top scorer Giordan Watson. Add in a few transfers and suspensions and we are looking at a team that is in no shape to stand up to a team like Marquette.

Marquette has too much depth and versatility for Central Michigan and playing on the road is only going to compound things for the Chippewas. I see this getting ugly fast although I am going to just take them in the 1st half because I absolutley hate taking it in the backdoor.

Playing Marquette 1st Half -12.5 for 2 Units.
