I always wondered why gas prices are cheaper or more expensive in different parts of the country. In New Jersey you can get gas right now for 3.17$ but i read in Hawaii for regular it is still over 4.00 and in Califorina it is very high to. Can someone explain why gas prices vary throughout the country?

I wonder why my gas is still $3.55 a gallon with oil under 90 per barrell. At those levels gas should be around $2.90 per gallon.

I dont want to hear the bullshit about speculation, buying the oil before it dropped and all that crap.

If that were true wouldnt it take a week or two for prices to go up at the pump when oil takes a big hike.

Highway robbery.

different states require different blends

standards higher in cali due to smog problems

winter gas is cheaper than summer gas also....as summer gas nationwide has higher standards

also state taxes play a roll

like missouri's state sales tax's on everything from smokes, gas etc....have always been low...and saint louis gas prices typically near the lowest

that's also a factor but likely a minimal one

there are other variables in the equation

and many others than i stated

like out east they get their gas from ports in the east, down south it comes form the gulf etc....

so like when ike hit the south had issues but the east didn't

I always fealt that in California, along with the higher refining costs, they price the gas according to what people can afford.

Often gas is less in Dallas than in Houston (next to all the refineries).

I think is is because God loves some people better than others.

cities have taxes too

i'd gather to guess houston is higher than dallas....houston is considered more liberal right? almost sure....so higher tax rates almost a given.....

like downtown chicago gas prices vs. the suburbs discrepancy is insanity and its mainly all about ze taxes

just like a pack of smokes cost you a ton more in downtown chicago than the suburbs

if every american sat down and calculated how much in taxes they pay every year

the 2nd american revolution would soon follow :)

from property taxes, to sales taxes, to income taxes, to parking tickets, to 9/11 security fees on airline tickets, you can make a huge list....

It is over 60%. Don't forget the nastiest tax of all, the hidden tax of inflation.

It takes time for chearper OPB to funnel itself through the system. There are taxes and refining factors as well.

they are always slower to lower prices than raise them

when they were rising gas stations couldn't keep up and were likely losing money

gas stations don't really make anything off gas especially with the perpetuation of credit cards

They have higher margins selling chips, candy bars, beer and soda than the black gold flowing through the pumps.

Most people don't realize that though, they yell at poor apu like he is gauging them.
