The Peachy World of Sports Gambling
Gambling is a dark, ugly addiction. It ruins families and relationships. It wares down it's victims until they are soulless and broke. The gambling machine will lure you in with flashing lights and bells, but you should save your quarters. Get out of that casino-better yet- run as fast as you can. That's not where people go to earn money- that's where they go to get their ass' kicked. Of course there are people who actually win(in a financial sense at least) in this rigged game; just don't expect to see them playing roulette.
The only people these casinos are scared of are sharps (otherwise known as "sharks"). These are the guys who "know people" at the horse track. Of course high salaries make it hard to know anyone in pro sports, so the sharps of this market are just well educated and informed. They know what to look for both on the stat sheet and off.
Casinos aren't the only ones preying on the shills. One institution that seems to have clean hands in the eyes of stay-at-home moms and orthodontists is The Government of Ontario. They run a friendly little business called the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (the people responsible for you waiting in line at the drug store of 16 minutes so granny can get he keno fix).
Everyone who has grown up in Ontario watching Hockey Night in Canada has seen the ads. The "average joe" is at the game, overcome with joy because he just struck gold through his parlay ticket. I'd compare these ads to cigarette commercials, they're showing you empty happiness. That dude who just won his proline ticket? He's just gonna go right back to the gas station, fill out another ticket, and chase that feeling again with more bets. Then when he loses those bets, he's gonna chase the money he's lost. Hell, he's spending five bucks on milk already, why not right?
Ask any disciplined gambler about winning money on three-team parlays, he/she (who am I kidding) he will laugh in your face, possibly covering it with hot dog remains and mountain dew in the process. There are no "sharps" out there making these bets. The OLGC knows this, and just like liquor, they have the majority of the market cornered. But hey, you could always send your money out of town and get better value.
But remember, like the game of life, discipline is the key to success in sports betting. You always start with it- it's the weak that finish without it.
