More Americans “Pro-Life” Than “Pro-Choice” for First Time

Also, fewer think abortion should be legal “under any circumstances”

by Lydia Saad

PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves "pro-life" on the issue of abortion and 42% "pro-choice." This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.

The new results, obtained from Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs survey, represent a significant shift from a year ago, when 50% were pro-choice and 44% pro-life. Prior to now, the highest percentage identifying as pro-life was 46%, in both August 2001 and May 2002.
The May 2009 survey documents comparable changes in public views about the legality of abortion. In answer to a question providing three options for the extent to which abortion should be legal, about as many Americans now say the procedure should be illegal in all circumstances (23%) as say it should be legal under any circumstances (22%). This contrasts with the last four years, when Gallup found a strong tilt of public attitudes in favor of unrestricted abortion.

well, since Gallup doesn't yield the desired result, they can no longer be viewed as accurate

and that's that

i never understood why abortion or gay marriage were such big issues. if you don't want to have an abortion, don't have one. if you don't want a gay marriage, don't have one. problem solved.

Just more of the conservatives trying to inflict their beliefs on us while blaming the liberals for the cumbersome legal system.

Christian conservatism = :hanging:

When the republicans make a comeback (and they will, you can bank it.) It won't be this crazy brand of moral nonsense.

I'm sorry, but I believe that if a baby can survive outside the womb, you cannot argue that it's not a person and thus has no rights.

And unlike our President, I believe all babies that are actually living outside the womb should receive medical attention.

some can be callous with a child's life, I can't

Well of course we can argue that point....heh

But I know it could cost me a couple of rounds of Jameson sours next time I get to belly up at a pub with certain friends from Connecticut.

Here's the good news. The number of pregnancies terminated in the third trimester is less than 2000 a year.

And with increased education to encourage those women who might want to terminate that they should do so as early as possible; and with increased advances in medicine that will help safely deliver preemie fetuses into the world without risk to the woman carrying it, that number will continue to drop.

The poll question as worded, as with many such social topics, is wholly inadequate for most of us to be able to respond clearly.

For example, I myself can honestly say that once the female hits the 25th week, if asked by her for my counsel, I would likely encourage "pro life".

But at same time, I would never support legislative proposals that would make her a criminal and subject to imprisonment were she to discard my (and other's) counsel and elect to terminate the pregnancy. Thus, I am "pro-choice" as well.

Polls Are Fun!

This is such an easy one for me now.I am one who has changed views since I was a teenager and had a couple A words done.I dont think it should be legal anymore because it`s just plain murder to me and the baby is helpless at that.Though shall not kill and thats it.I just dont understand how the government works anymore. They pretend to care for our lives in one way like seatbelts, then allow abortion on the other hand.Am I missing something??

No one requires you to strap in your fetus nor your sperm, but yes you better put the baby in a carrier and strap it in.

But it's not a baby, it's a collection of cells that could turn into a human child.

I like the Canada Model, OK any time before 3 months, anytime after only in emergency situations.
