Once they graduate Basic training (I think that's what it is) it goes downhill.

and a few that aren't strictly war movies:
Good Morning Vietnam
Dead Presidents

...and those are just Vietnam movies!

The Longest Day
The Great Escape
Patton
Bridge on the River Kwai
Thin Red Line
Saving Private Ryan
...all for WWII

Gallipoli <--one of my favorite movies of all time
Grand Illusion
All Quiet on the Western Front
...all for WWI

Nam?

Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Boys from Company C., Hamburger Hill, Green Berets. Honorable mention, scenes from Dead Presidents.

Full Metal Jacket was almost two seperate Kubrick movies. I loved first part, basic, 2nd part just failed to match the first?

Blackhawk Down. Best non major conflict.

WWII? Big Red One, Saving Private Ryan, Battle of Britain, Kelly's Heroes, Enemy at the Gates. Patton. Von Ryan's Express, The Great Escape. Das Boot. Band of Brothers box set.

Japs? Tora, Tora, Tora. Midway, Thin Red Line, We Were Soldiers, Empire of the Sun. Bridge on the River Kwai.

Civil? Gettysburg, Gods and Generals. Cold Mountain, Glory. Scenes from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Same DI in Full Metal was advisor and helo pilot in Apocalypse Now. Also Lawrence Fishburne's big break. Unedited version, way too long with useless scenes.

Best wishes...OF :howdy:

It's my favorite. There may be others that equal it, but none surpass it.

Funniest/Smartest line - Private Joker (Matthew Modine) "Does that mean Ann Margaret's not coming?"

In Harm's Way .......older classic .....check the star power out in that movie. :103631605

Best navy movie ever. ("The Were Expendable" is a close second.) My favorite "army" war movie is "Kelly's Heroes". I've watched it over 30 times, including one time on the Spanish channel (and I don't speak a word of Spanish).

First half of FMJ is tough to beat, but the second half takes it out of "best war movie" contention.

Watched "Stalingrad "twice, highly recommend it. Can identify with the boot camp scenes in 'Full Metal Jacket" and they were as authentic as any I've seen , but as several others have pointed out, the remainder of the movie was sorely lacking.

Oops, forgot the Dirty Dozen.

Best line, man, there are a ton. This one:

Are you quitting on me? Well, are you? Then quit, you slimy fucking walrus-looking piece of shit. Get the fuck off of my obstacle. Get the fuck down off of my obstacle. Now. Move it. I'm going to rip your balls off, so you cannot contaminate the rest of the world. I will motivate you, Private Pyle, if it short-dicks every cannibal on the Congo.

I dream of thinking up that one.

And, I want to slip my tube steak in your sister.

But if there is a universal best line it has to be "Me so horny, me love you long time."

A good one not mentioned is 'The Light Horsemen' about Austrialian Cavalry during WW I.
I remember seeing 'Firebase Gloria'. Very good under the radar movie. Depicted the vietnamese in very human terms unlike any other Vietnam movie I ever saw.
'Gettysburg' was superb but 'Gods and Generals' was not nearly in the same class.
Not sure if you could classify it as a typical war movie but was very impressed by the German film 'Downfall.' Have not seen 'Stalingrad' yet but will eventually.

I cant believe you guys left Enemy at the Gates off your list or
Four Feathers (the original)..i can understand not knowing Four feathers
but forgetting Enemy at the Gates??? Thats unforgivable....

Two movies i would like to see made are "Little Big Horn" about Castor and his ill fated family and troops..(It would make a great story especially being that Castor and almost his entire male clan got killed that day)

Second one is "Kursk" No i am not talking about the submarine that sunk..
Kursk was the site of the largest armored battle of all time between the Soviets and Nazi germany. Without this battle, forget D-day and all that bullshit..We would have been slaughtered... This was the single greatest battle in World War 2 bar none.
The soviets actually single handedly paid the highest price of any of the allied Nations and with all the bullshit on the history channel, you never get to even learn of almost half of the the events of WW2...(trust me on this..The history channel covers less than 25% of it)

BTw..I also like that Clive Owen movie..(he is a pilot and gets shot down)

Troy wasnt too bad either...

LAst Samurai was definately top notch war action, but the dramatic aspect and romanticism kind of take it out of the "war movie" genre into more of a drama/action sequence..

Ps..Any of you lame ass hollywood idiots reading this forum steal my ideas for a movie and fail to pay me will face my wrath!!! Now go back to making remakes of Superman and king kong you worthless hacks!!!!

My favorite part of Full Metal Jacket is the first scene when the guy is walking going off on everyone. "BULLSHIT, I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!"

Castor? George wouldn't be too happy with this butchering of his name, much like what happened to him.
