Four teams is clearly not enough, that is pretty evident. I am not saying to go to a top 16 route but 8 would be fair enough or perhaps even 6 with the top 2 having a bye. The argument that the regular season would mean nothing is so stupid as you still have the perform to get into the playoffs.
FSU was probably about the 12th best team in the country, and they were exposed as such today.
the playoff needs to stay at 4 teams... If they increase it the regular season won't mean much and they will need to eliminate a game from the regular season.
the best team in the country will end up prevailing most likely, whoever that may be... Which is the point. I'm just glad FSU got rolled
I would disagree with this, at least at eight teams. In most years two of the major conferences would already have both participants in the conference championship game already in the playoffs, which would make those games meaningless, other than seeding. If your seventh, eighth, or even sixth in many years you already lost to someone in the top four-five spots, thus greatly reducing the importance/consequence of those games. I can't recall many seasons where the seventh or eighth team had any remote justification for being in the playoff. You are just adding more big five conference teams who failed in the regular season with eight teams.
back to back years of FSU being the most overrated team in football history.
The only thing Packer has right is that the stupid preseason rankings throw a monkey wrench as it unfairly gives advantages & disadvantages to certain teams. However cases could be made that teams outside the top 4 deserved a shot in pretty much every season when the BCS was around. I like the 6 teams with the top 2 getting a bye model as teams would definitely jockey ffor the bye.
I agree on the pre-season rankings, but I still don't see how you could leave FSU out this season being undefeated.
Six could work, to your point, in most yours there is at least one team you could argue should have made it and sometimes two teams. I just don't see any years where you could make a good case for three or four deserving teams being left out. The battle for the bye could add an intriguing aspect to the mix as well.
