Stephen Nover (Comp Play)
PICK: Philadelphia Phillies
Offered at: -104 BoDog
REASON FOR PICK: Oddsmakers sure have long memories. They still haven't forgotten Anthony Reyes' fine post-season last year. How else do you explain the short price on the Phillies in this matchup against the Cardinals' Reyes?

Since pitching so well against Detroit in the World Series, Reyes has failed to win a game. He is 0-8 this season with a 6.34 ERA. The only reason he's not back in the minors is because of injuries to the Cardinals' pitching staff.

Lefties are batting .303 against Reyes and the Phillies can load their lineup with left-handers. One of these lefties is Ryan Howard, who is off a series against Cleveland where he batted .462 with four extra base hits. After a slow start, Howard is on pace to finish with 42 homers and 130 RBI's.

Philadelphia has won seven of its last eight road games against right-handers. The Phillies are 16-7 in their past 23 against righties. They can beat Reyes with power from Howard and Chase Utley, or on the bases.

The Phillies have swiped 56-of-66 bases. They certainly should be able to run on the Cardinals, who have allowed 12-of-13 steals since starting catcher Yadier Molina went out on May 29 with a broken wrist. The Cardinals have been fortunate so far to match up against non-running teams Oakland, Washington and Kansas City since losing Molina. They won't be so lucky here against star base stealers Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins.

Jamie Moyer gets the start for Philadelphia. The Phillies are 12-5 in his last 17 starts. The veteran left-hander had a tremendous outing in his last start holding baseball's No. 1 offense, Detroit, to two runs on four hits in seven innings last Saturday in a 6-3 win.

Moyer is 3-1 lifetime against the Cardinals with a 2.86 ERA, having last faced them in 2004. Keep in mind, too, St. Louis has more than just Molina out. Also on the DL are Jim Edmonds and David Eckstein.

Bottom line is this game is priced wrong. The Phillies should be a decent favorite here. They certainly are worth backing, especially at this short price.

Washington Nats

Jeff Benton: Play on Wash
I know Washington just got its brains beat in by the Tigers at home, and Cleveland is tied with Detroit in the A.L. Central. Also know that Indians starter Fausto Carmona has been outstanding. But Nats lefty Micah Bowie has been pretty damn impressive, too. I backed Bowie on Sunday as a big underdog at Toronto, and the relative unknown surrendered just two runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in six innings, and the Blue Jays prevailed 4-2. With that win, Toronto improved to 6-0 in Bowie’s starts. Bowie has held all six opponents to three runs or less, and he hasn’t even given up more than four hits in any of those contests.Besides, it’s not as though the Indians are playing that well, going 8-10 in their last 10 games.
Again, I know Carmona has been tough, and he may pitch a gem here. But he’s also still very young, and he’s just not established enough to be laying THIS kind of price on the road, especially against a guy who’s been as sharp as Bowie.

Matt Rivers: Play on Wash
Fausto Carmona is on the fast track to becoming an All-Star but I'll still take my chances on the capable Nats in this home dog spot. Washington did just get bombed at home by Detroit but even with those bad losses I don't mind Manny Acta's club. Zimmerman, Young, Church, Lopez, Belliard and the Nats have been competitive after the first month, save that last series and with a guy in Micah Bowie who has been pretty effective as a starter should be right there in this game as well. Bowie just looked good in winning in Toronto and has been very solid in similar underdog roles such as this. The southpaw could possibly neutralize left handed hitters Grady Sizemore and Travis Hafner and challenge the Tribe in RFK. This ballpark is still a pitcher's park, no matter how good the Tigers smacked the ball around in that last series and more times than not lead to lower scoring tighter games in which the pup has a shot to bark. The Indians are the superior club in this matchup but the number is a bit high as the Nats are definitely good enough to win this thing at home!

Scott Delaney: Play on Wash
Bowie continues to impress with every start, and the Nats are 3-0 in his last three starts, while he's 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA in them. The Nationals are getting a solid price in this one, as Paul Byrd comes in over-hyped, and performing poorly. He is 0-2 in his last three starts and sports a lofty 9.60 ERA. The Tribe has lost three of the last four series openers, while also dropping a make-up game against Seattle on June 11. This will be the Tribe's 17th game in 18 days, and seventh road game in the midst of all that.

BOL tonight BB.

I have purposely stayed out of your thread the last few nights since PP and I have been fighting and I didn't want him bringing any of his childish second grade school-yard crap into your classy threads (like he did when he saw me in MetFan's thread wishing him BOL).
