At the Gate - Friday
By Mike Dempsey

I wrote yesterday that Chad Brown was closing in on Todd Pletcher in the trainer standings at Saratoga, and then Brown went out to pull off a hat trick on Thursday to get within one win with four days left in the 40-day meeting.

Brown has now won with 22 of his 86 starters (26%) while Pletcher has 23 winners from his 112 starters (22%). Brown has finished second behind Pletcher in each of the last three years and it looked that way again this summer, but Pletcher has gone cold and the gap has shrunk over the past week.

Brown has two runners in on Friday. In the $100,000 Riskaverse he sends out the morning line favorite Granny Mc’s Kitten (9-5). In the nightcap, he sends out the first time starter Wavell Avenue (5-1).

Pletcher has a shot of striking first as he sends out Village Warrior (3-1) in the fourth race, a $25,000 starter allowance race. Then in the ninth, he sends out the debut runner Alexandrie (2-1).

The Riskaverse drew 10 although two are main track only entrants and the weather looks just about perfect, so we likely will see eight go to the gate.

Granny’s Mc’s Kitten is my top pick as she makes her second start off a three-month break. She beat first level optional claimers last out and has won two of her three starts over the Spa turf including last year’s P.G. Johnson.

We have a huge day coming up on Saturday, a 12-race card that features four graded stakes including the $600,000 Woodward (G1), $500,000 Forego (G1) and the $300,000 Prioress (G2).

In addition, two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan is back in action in the $250,000 Bernard Baruch (G2) which will be his first start since winning the Woodward Reserve Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs back on May 3.

We only have four days of Saratoga left, with Labor Day the final day of the meet. In addition, we only have three more days to enjoy track announcer Tom Durkin, who will make Sunday’s Spinaway (G1) his final call.

Here is today’s opening race from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Clm $25,000 (1:00 ET)
4 Da Wildcat Girl 3-1
5 Little Gidding 4-1
6 Appearance 5-2
3 Tacones 5-1

Analysis: Da Wildcat Girl is coming off a decent effort in a runner up finish for this tag, no match for the winner. She tracked the early pace toward the inside, altered course to the outside, brushing with a foe and edging that foe for the runner up spot by a neck. She beat $25,000 non-winners of two three back in a game effort earning a number good enough to beat this group. She owns a solid pace profile throughout and looks like the one to beat for the sharp Klesaris barn.

Little Gidding stumbled coming out of the gate last out and after being outrun early she made a mild late run to finish third against $16,000 non-winners of two. She was claimed out of the race by the RRod barn that is 30% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim. Blinkers are added here she figures to move forward off her last outing which puts her in the hunt against this group.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 4,5 / 3,4,5,6
TRI: 4,5 / 3,4,5,6 / 2,3,4,5,6

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 10 The Riskaverse (5:53 ET)
5 Granny Mc's Kitten 9-5
10 Nisharora 6-1
2 Miss Frost 3-1
4 Latique 8-1

Analysis: Granny Mc's Kitten came off a three month break with a sharp win against Alw-1 foes over the turf here and looks primed for a top effort here second off the bench. The filly won the P.G. Johnson over the grass here last summer in her first start against winners after breaking her maiden in her debut here. The Brown barn has been hot and hits at a 23% clip with runners making their second start off a 45-180 day layoff.

Nisharora checked in fifth in her U.S. debut in the Wild Applause, which was off a year layoff. The filly won her first two starts and then was second in a stake at San Siro before hitting the bench. The Mettee runners for Team Valor have not been firing like they did while under the care of Graham Motion, but this gal looks like she could be a good one and Johnny V. sees fit to give her a run while Rosario departs to ride for Shug here.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 9-5 or better.
EX: 5,10 / 2,4,5,10
TRI: 5,10 / 2,4,5,10 / 2,3,4,5,10

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R3: #6 Path to Power 15-1
R4: #4 Desvelo 10-1
R5: #6 Zafiro Azul 12-1
R6: #10 Decisive Move 12-1
R6: #7 Awakino Cat 8-1

R8: #3 Thatza Wrap 8-1
R9: #9 Madoo 8-1
R10: #4 Latique 8-1

Good luck today!

KEY STAT: Dortmund have won five of their last six Bundesliga away fixtures

EXPERT VERDICT: Borussia Dortmund lost 2-0 at home to Bayer Leverkusen on the opening weekend of the season but can respond with a win at Augsburg. Jurgen Klopp's men have a habit of recovering strongly from the occasional poor result and should be too good for Augsburg, who have been weakened by the departure of some key players.

RECOMMENDATION: Dortmund

KEY STAT: Marseille have lost just one of their last 11 Ligue 1 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Marseille and Nice have identical league records after their first three games: one win, one draw, one defeat, four goals scored and five conceded. OM should be able to build on their 1-0 victory at Guingamp last time out while Nice, who finished just two points clear of relegation last term, lost at home to Bordeaux.

RECOMMENDATION: Marseille

KEY STAT: Malaga haven’t won in their last 13 visits to the Mestalla

EXPERT VERDICT: Valencia endured a disappointing league campaign last season and may struggle to beat a Malaga side that showed tenacity in their 1-0 opening-day win over Athletic Bilbao. The two games between these sides last year were tight affairs and with both now under the stewardship of new managers there may not be much to separate them in this encounter.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Burnley shipped 14 goals at home last season, no Championship team let in fewer

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester United look a fair price to seize three points but are unlikely to find Burnley at Turf Moor as easy to cut through as Chelsea did on the opening weekend. The Clarets face a battle to stay up, but they’re better at the back than they showed against the Blues and can keep this close.

RECOMMENDATION: Under 2.5 goals

KEY STAT: West Brom haven’t kept a clean sheet against Swansea in their last six meetings

EXPERT VERDICT: Garry Monk’s Swans have won both games this term, including a victory at Old Trafford, and they have a good record against West Brom, winning four of the last six league meetings between the teams. West Brom have drawn both of their opening two games and look a pedestrian outfit once again this term.

RECOMMENDATION: Swansea

KEY STAT: Manchester City have won four of their last six home league meetings with Stoke 3-0

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester City have won their six home Premier League clashes with Stoke by an aggregate score of 15-0 and bookmakers expect that run to continue. Stoke have disappointed so far, losing at home to Villa and drawing against ten-man Hull, so the hosts should win with some ease.

RECOMMENDATION: Man City to win 2-0

Vernon: Friday 8/29 Analysis
By James Witherite

DRF HARNESS

Best Bet: SEBASTIAN K (9th)

Race 1

(6) MISTRESSWITHMUSCLE drew clear at will in the Tompkins stake at Tioga last week, turning in a dominant 11-length win while still in hand. She's hit the exacta in her last four starts, equally capable while calling the shots or off a strong middle move. (3) HIGHEST PEAK ships north off a trio of solid Pennsylvania efforts, striking from the pocket for a 1:54 1/5 score at Pocono two back. She's shown strong recent form, and she figures to be involved from the outset. (7) DRIVING MISS CRAZY broke in a NYSS event at Monticello last week, but took two of her six career wins in other NYSS events. She's at her best when involved early, but others have the speed edge here.

Race 2

(5) WELL BUILT sustained a push to the fore in a 1:54.1 triumph two back at Pocono, but fell victim to a break on the far turn more recently. He's knocked heads with the toughest three-year-old trotters, but struggled to keep up in the Beal and Dancer. Easier group here puts him in striking range. (1B)MR LINDY was a convincing winner in both his career starts, drawing clear through the long Mohawk stretch. Two-turn configuration is nothing new to this Cantab Hall colt, but he'll have to display more speed than has been required of him thus far. (2) MISTER ANSON earned minor checks in NYSS events, hitting the board in three of six efforts on the year. His inside draw should put him close enough to the pace to stay on for a minor share again.

Race 3

(2) MY FRIEND CHARLIE beat N3L foes two back, and more recently sustained a stout first-over try against Excelsior-A rivals before flattening in the stretch. He returns to a cozier spot here, and has enjoyed improved form since returning to the bigger track. (7) WHISPUR beat optional $10k foes in two of his last three starts, and remains in for the tag tonight. Strong form is a plus for this likely pacesetter, but he's liable to face more pressure tonight. (1) STEUBEN LONE PINE returns off a month break, staying close for strong finishes against top distaff trotters before her time off. Can track along for a minor share in this slightly softer group.

Race 4

(8) MELVYN recovered well from breaks to save fifth in a 1:51.4 effort last week, sustaining wide bids for solid finishes in the two prior weeks as well. He moves up in class, but there's enough pace in the race that he can strike off cover. (9) WHITEMOUNTAINPOWER stayed on well from the pocket two back at this level, but controlled the pace in a 1:51 3/5 defeat more recently. He's got the speed to contend here, coming up just short in past efforts against tougher groups. (6) R BLUE MOON RISING steps up off a pocket win, just prevailing in 1:51 1/5 against a slightly easier group. Fits under the N5L condition, and figures to be prominent early.

Race 5

(8) ELLEN'S ISLE ships in from the Meadows after a no-chance 1:53 4/5 effort against top trotters there. She has a much stronger chance of being involved from the outset, and she holds a strong back-class edge over this group. (1)PAINITE has shown better late kick in recent efforts, and can secure a close stalking spot with her inside draw. Consistently a factor at this level, she's 13 of 22 ITM on the year. (6) WILD AND CRAZY GUY beat N5L foes in front-end fashion in two of his last four starts, but was left to chase Gural Hanover more recently in a NYSS race last week. Capable enough, no doubt, but will need a clean dispatch.

Race 6

(6) SHAKE IT CERRY carries an impressive 75% strike rate through her career, and she's by far the richest filly in the field, with her earnings nearly equaling the combined earnings of her eight rivals combined. Likely pacesetter has numerous stakes wins to her credit, and could very well be strongest here again. Seek value in exotics. (4) HEAVEN'S DOOR faded off a first-over try in the Hambletonian Oaks, but was a 1:52 winner in the NJSS final at the Meadowlands in May. Stakes experience certainly helps her cause, but she seems at her best when involved early. (1) BROADWAY SOCKS hasn't missed the board all season, mostly winning smaller stakes events in Pennsylvania. She faces a tougher group here, but she's got the potential to track closely for at least a small share.

Race 7

(7) OMNIPOTENT just missed off cover last week, charging late through a :27 3/5 LQ. She makes her second start at Vernon tonight, and the presence of #3, #6, and #8 could create for a more pressured pace into which she can close. (6) WAR HERO won his last two Open events locally, both in a pressing-stalking role. Gutsy winner may face stronger pressure this week, but still is capable enough. (2) EVIL URGES narrowly missed in a ferocious late charge last week, closing from the absolute back to miss by less than a length. Past pressing-stalking efforts yielded strong finishes in this group, and he could be well suited to sit just off a likely contested lead.

Race 8 - Zweig Main Event

(1A) FATHER PATRICK has only seen defeat in three of his 19 career starts, with that being the case in his two most recent efforts. The $105,000 Lexington purchase has every chance to redeem himself here after a gutsy defeat to Datsyuk in the Tompkins. Lays over the field. (8) RESOLVE was elevated to first in his Tompkins event last week, sustaining a first-over bid after finishing a chasing fifth in the Hambletonian. He's been on the cusp of this top group throughout, and can prove a live longshot given ideal pace and trip circumstances. (1) NUNCIO figures to be close to the pace here, just beaten in the Hambletonian after setting a strong tempo two back. He's hit the exacta in all 19 of his career starts, facing the toughest trotters with consistency. (2) FLYHAWK EL DURADO won his last four NYSS events, and steps into a tougher group here off last week's 1:52 4/5 local victory. Will likely have to change tactics with many leavers in the field, but he's capable of staying on for at least a small share.

Race 9 - Crawford Farms

(4) SEBASTIAN K saw narrow defeat in the Maple Leaf Trot in July, but has been an absolute force in the open trotting ranks since arriving Stateside. His 1:50 Cashman win at the Meadowlands equals the trotting record at the storied oval. Ake Svanstedt has managed this trotter well, and he comes in off some well-deserved rest. (9) MARKET SHARE has demonstrated incredible longevity, remaining competitive at the top levels since taking top honors as a three-year-old in 2012. He's shown up to every big dance since May, and scored wins in the Maxie Lee and a Maple Leaf elimination. Yet another clash of the trotting titans tonight! (2) ARCHANGEL was reeled in off the far turn by Sebastian K in the Cashman, but established the 1:50 Meadowlands trotting record the week prior in his elimination. The five-year-old is finding his old form, coming in off a pair of solid efforts. (7) INTIMIDATE took his 1:51 mark here last year, and ships in after a narrow miss in the Earl Rowe Trot at Georgian, covering the three-turn mile in 1:52.4. Fast miles and strong closing ability put him in the hunt.

Race 10

(8) ROYAL SHYSTER drops a couple levels after proving no threat last week, but chased well off tracking trips in his two prior starts against stronger foes than he faces today. Can pounce off a tracking trip. (4) MYSTICAL MUSCLES rallied off cover for a win two back, but was shuffled out of contention last week at this level. Clearer stalking trip should aid. (1) HITONTHEFLIPSIDE battled throughout for a 1:57 3/5 win last week, and he drops in for the optional $6k tag here. His last effort at this level proved just short, as he rallied to within a half-length off cover. Capable enough.

(1) DESIGNED TO BE is the obvious choice in this division with the rail and her recent efforts this season. (2) MUSCLE BABE is capable of a better performance. She comes from the Menary barn, draws inside and shows the speed. (4) TOSCA shouldn't get overlooked for the triactor. She comes from the Henriksen barn and finished a game fourth last week from an outside post.

(1) DREAMFAIR ECLIPSE draws inside, comes from the Fletcher barn and has hit the board in each of her last two in this class. (2) HAT TRICK HONEY gets much needed post relief and could be sitting on a big effort. I like her at a price.

Race 5

(1) EQXUISITE GLIDE gets the rail, comes from the Alagna barn and is fresh off a win. He's capable of the class jump as the son of Yankee Glide has won two of his last three. (10) HUNKOFBURNINLOVE has finished second in each of his last three starts in this class for trainer/driver Durand. (2) SWEETLANDOFLIBERTY has been a fringe player in this class, but gets an inside post with Waples aboard.

Race 8

(3) FRENCH LAUNDRY is a three-time winner from five starts this season, comes from the Takter barn and is fresh off an open length score. (6) ALACRITY went a tough trip in his latest en route to victory and hasn't been worse than second in three career appearances. (7) WHEELS AH SMOKIN has missed the board once from five career starts and comes from top connections. He minds his manners and will offer a low price.

Race 9

(6) LIFETIME PURSUIT is the top sophomore trotting filly on the continent right now. She's the filly to beat for Takter and Miller. (7) CANTABS FORTUNE has been very consistent as of late, comes from the Zeron barn and very likeable for the exactor. (5) DONATELLA HANOVER was the favourite last week, but had to settle for second. She has the speed and is very versatile.

Race 10

(5) AUNT CAROLINE comes out of the Lady Liberty, gets a better post and faces an easier field. She might offer a fair price in this contest. (8) AMERICAN IN PARIS captured last week’s event and has been the picture of consistency this season. (1) MY SECRET BELLE is fresh off an impressive win at Georgian Downs and faces older company in here. She gets the rail along with a solid record this season.
