KEY STAT: Bayern Munich won 15 of their 17 home league games last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Bayern Munich can start the Bundesliga campaign with a bang by comfortably beating Wolfsburg. Pep Guardiola has been careful with his World Cup stars in pre-season but new signing Robert Lewandowski missed out on a trip to Brazil and the Polish forward should quickly get off the mark having won the Bundesliga Golden Boot last season.

RECOMMENDATION: R Lewandowski first goalscorer

KEY STAT: Real have lost just one of their last 11 domestic matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Cristiano Ronaldo may be unavailable for the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup after picking up a muscle strain in the 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu but Real Madrid can win whether their star man plays or not. James Rodriguez came off the bench to notch in the first game and his creative ability could make the difference.

RECOMMENDATION: Real Madrid

At the Gate - Friday
By Mike Dempsey

Thursday was a washout at Saratoga with all of the races moved to the main track, and it likely will be more of the same for Friday, as the area got a couple of inches of rain and more is expected today.

I was a bit too optimistic regarding the weather yesterday as I thought we had a shot of staying on the turf. We still managed to have three winners on top. Today’s report is handicapped for off the turf.

The feature today is scheduled for the main track anyway and it is a good one as Close Hatches and Princess of Sylmar renew acquaintances in the Grade 1, $500,000 Personal Ensign.

Close Hatches was my top pick in the Ogden Phipps (G1) last out and she barely held on, beating the late running Princess of Sylmar by a head. With the extra ground here there is a good chance the tables could be turned.

They both have a win on a wet track and are bred to handle the off going, so there is no advantage there. Close Hatches does come back off a 2 ½ month break, while Princess of Sylmar came back to run second in the Delaware Handicap (G1) in her next start on July 12.

In that outing she could not catch a loose on the lead Belle Gallantey, who had things pretty easy up front. The pace should be more honest on Friday afternoon.

We get off to an early start on Saturday, which is Travers Day. The 14-race card (yes, 14 races) gets underway at 11:35 a.m. ET. Make sure you have plenty of toner to print out my report.

Here is today’s opening race from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Clm $50,000 (1:00 ET)
3 Be Bullish 9-5
4 Moments Notiz 2-1
2 Bernie the Maestro 6-1
5 Doubledown Again 4-1

Analysis: Be Bullish stalked the early pace and could not get to the winner in the stretch in a runner up finish last out for this tag. He caught a racing strip that was kind to inside speed that day. Two back he ran fourth against Alw-2 optional claimers with the top pair both coming back to win next out. He has handled wet tracks throughout his career but we have to overlook his 0 for 9 mark over the main track here.

Moments Notiz came of a 2 1/2 month break with a close up third last out against $7,500 starter allowance foes at Delaware Park. This gelding is a win machine, taking 16 of his 30 career starts including 12 of his last 19. He owns a solid pace profile throughout and has won three of his seven trips over wet tracks. Could be an all-Jacobson exacta to start the day.

Wagering
WIN: #3 to win at 8-5 or better.
EX: 3,4 / 2,3,4
TRI: no play

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 The Personal Ensign G1 (5:15 ET)
7 Princess of Sylmar 9-5
6 Close Hatches 8-5
1 Antipathy 5-1
4 Fiftyshadesofhay 12-1

Analysis: Princess of Sylmar stalked a slow early pace and could not get by the loose on the lead Belle Galantey last out in the Delaware Handicap (G1). Two back this gal made a good late rally and just missed running down Close Hatches, missing by a tough head in a game effort.

She comes back here with blinkers added and she has put in a trio of good works since her last outing. She should be a bit closer to the pace here and should get a good pace set up as the early pace will be much faster than she saw last out at Delaware Park. She is perfect in two starts over the Spa main track, winning the Alabama (G1) and CCA Oaks (G1) here last summer, the latter over a wet track.

Close Hatches is making her first start since holding off our top pick last out in the Ogden Phipps (G1) and she was our top pick that day. I hate to jump off as this gal has won three in a row and she won the Azeri (G2) three back in her lone go over a wet track which we may see today.

She got a perfect trip last out and took the field gate to wire two and three back. There is plenty of speed in here and but she has to get some extra ground and her price is going to be on the light side today.

Antipathy is coming off a sharp win in the Shuvee Handicap (G2) last out. Two back she was completely overlooked in the stacked Ogden Phipps and only missed by a head and a neck at 30-1. She loves a wet track and she showed last out that her effort against the big gals was no fluke. She is getting five pounds from the top two.

Wagering
WIN: #7 to win at 8-5 or better.
EX: 6,7 / 1,4,6,7
TRI: 6,7 / 1,4,6,7 / 1,2,4,6,7

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R2: #6 Arctic Ocean 12-1
R3: #5 Tenango 8-1
R4: #2 Keri Belle 10-1
R6: #10 Z Lucky 8-1
R6: #7 Hard Rumor 10-1
R7: #9 Souper Social 10-1
R8: #8 Ragtime 8-1
R9: #4 Fiftyshadesofhay 12-1
R10: #5 Ithastobegeorge 8-1
R10: #9 Gaining Ground 8-1

Good luck today!

Mohawk: Friday 8/22 Analysis
By Greg Gangle

DRF HARNESS

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: I LUV THE NITELIFE (10th)

Spot Play: DONATELLA HANOVER (7th)

Race 1

(7) COE LEADER draws a better post this week and drops in class for trainer/driver Rick Zeron. (4) WHERES THE CLICKER will need to mind his manners this week to be effective for driver Mike Saftic. He drops in class and was a game second two back as the gelding only missed by a neck. (8) DESIGNER GENES draws outside again for a fourth straight week, but has the gate speed to be well-positioned in the early stages of the mile.

Race 2

(5) GIFTED WAY will make his Mohawk debut after racing four starts south of the border for trainer Tony Alagna. (2) LUCK O THE IRISH went a tough trip in his latest as he was parked out for the majority of the mile and continued to press the leader until taking over command en route to victory. (1) DONT RUSH made a miscue in his latest, which is uncharacteristic of the young trotter. He has minded his manners up until last week's dash and will look to respond tonight.

Race 3

(3) BEACH GAL ships home and back into the Dave Menary barn after competing in the PASS for trainer Ron Burke. (4) REBEKA BAYAMA is the queen of back class in this field with over $700K to her credit. She also drops out of the Fillies & Mares Preferred and into a much more suitable level. (5) RUBIS PRESCOTT continues to offer a fair price in each pari-mutuel start despite winning two of her last four.

Race 4

(8) PRAIRIE ILLUSION gets top billing on this occasion off the way she finished her mile last week at a higher class. (5) THATLL BE FRANNY has all kinds of back class to offer and faces a much more suitable field in this dash. (9) TRUE REFLECTION races at her best when she's put into the race and that may occur from the outside post nine with driver Billy Davis, Jr. aboard.

Race 5

(2) CHARLIE IS A JOKER recently entered the Baillargeon barn and made a miscue in his debut on August 15 at Georgian Downs. (4) SMARTY PANTS starts from the Richard Moreau barn, gets major post relief and drops significantly in class. (6) PROTEGE SEELSTER is just one of two entries in this field in for the claiming tag and will face a tougher group of rivals on this occasion.

Race 6

(8) A REAL COMMITMENT got the job done last week in this class at 9-1 for driver Randy Waples and trainer Corey Johnson. (9) WILDCAT BEAUTY was a game second last week behind A Real Commitment and found the wire first two back for regular pilot Jonathan Drury. (3) SECTIONLINE AQUA draws inside and has hit the board in four of her last five starts for trainer Steve Bauder.

Race 7

(6) DONATELLA HANOVER comes from the tandem of Jimmy Takter and driver Yannick Gingras. This Cantab Hall filly has been racing against some of the top Grand Circuit fillies in recent weeks and has been holding her own. (3) MY INSPIRATION was victorious in a dead-heat in her most recent at The Meadowlands with Donatella Hanover. (4) RIVETING ROSIE has been much better in recent weeks and finally got the monkey off her back as she enjoyed her first win of the season.

Race 8

(5) SIR LBS Z TAM has some back class to offer and draws into a wide-open field, which she's capable of winning. (2) SHADYS M THREE also drops in class this week after finishing third last start at a higher level. (7) SEASIDE RORY banked over $130K last season while racing in the OSS program, but hasn't found her best stride yet this season.

Race 9

(7) LIFETIME PURSUIT will likely get the bulk of attention in here after winning the Hambletonian Oaks for trainer Jimmy Takter and driver Yannick Gingras. (4) DESIGNED TO BE could offer a very low price for trainer Julie Miller and driver Jody Jamieson after finishing a strong second in the Hambletonian Oaks in her latest. (3) CANTABS FORTUNE has been racing very competitively in the PASS program south of the border and was a recent game second to Grand Circuit filly Shake It Cerry.

Race 10

(2) I LUV THE NITELIFE made her first start this season following a knee injury and the award-winning mare finished fifth, timed in 1:51 2/5. She'll need to be better. (7) VOELZ HANOVER has back class mare and has been very consistent this season; obvious choice for the exactor.(3) MATTIE TERROR GIRL was recently racing in the Grand Circuit against the sport's top free-for-all mares and now takes a drop in class as she moves onto this circuit

Race 11

(7) NAT A VIRGIN raced very well last week following a mini layoff to finish third for trainer Dustin Jones. (1) ITS NO SECRET has a terrific closing kick and gets the rail in a short field. Jody Jamieson will be aboard again this week and this 11-time winner has been a threat in this class for many weeks. (6) REQUEST FOR PAROLE has been racing very consistently since the addition of Lasix for trainer Corey Johnson.

Race 12

(1) KEEPERS DESTINY is just one-for-21 this season, which is a concern, but she enters the Casie Coleman barn and finds her way into a low-end condition on this circuit. She has well over $700K of back class. (2) DREAMFAIR ECLIPSE closed very strong from an outside post in her latest pari-mutuel effort. She closed from ninth-to-second with a :26 3/5 final quarter for trainer Pat Fletcher and driver James MacDonald. (4) RUB N TUG was raised in class last week and was assigned an outside post and wasn’t effective. She drops into a much more suitable level for this 20-time winner.

Yonkers: Friday 8/22 Analysis
By Brewster Smith

DRF HARNESS

MEET STATS: 243 - 937 / $1,543.40 BEST BETS: 19 - 78 / $82.10

Best Bet: FOX VALLEY STEFFEN (2nd)

Spot Play: BENTLEY KARAN (5th)

Race 1

(4) LOCKLOADNEXPLODE has a good shot of mowing these down at his best. (2) SODYS MOONSHINE should fare well from the 2-hole. (3) SUCROSE HANOVER could land a share.

Race 2

(1) FOX VALLEY STEFFEN retains the rail slot and showed good speed. Trotting gelding can make tonight a winning one. (3) LOOKING HANOVER & (2) DOUBLE BUNDY N get post relief; top contenders in here.

Race 3

(1) MY DAD ROCKS put in a sharp effort last out. There's a good chance this guy can move forward. (2) UPFRONT ELLIJAY ED is knocking at the door based on his last three trips. (6) ARTS BLAZE posted an easy score in his most recent try; watch out again.

Race 4

If he gets the right trip, (4) WATERSIDE CHAMP can take this race; maybe. (1) JW RACER held on for win honors last time out at Philly; threat again. (3) SAMS TREASURE gets post relief.

Race 5

Saratoga invader (4) BENTLEY KARAN is sharp; ready to roll over this group. (1) BLACKTUXWHITESOCKS has good early trot; main danger from the fence. (3) AS YALL LIKE IT can do quite well from the 3-hole.

Race 6

(5) SOCIAL SCENE has been on a roll scoring her last three. Pacing mare should keep on her winning ways. (7) SUMMERTIME LEA has been second best in her last two tries; main danger. (2) KRISPY APPLE is not out of this from the 2-hole.

Race 7

(2) BINGO QUEEN is a very sharp trotter that can make tonight a winning with a fine-timed drive from Holland. (3) BOUND FOR FAME closed well for the place spot last time around. (6) ROSSINI has wheeled off two straight victories.

Race 8

(4) TOBER moves to the four-slot and that might help her cause. (1) BEE A MAGICIAN was sharp in her last three outings; big threat from the fence. (3) ARCH MADNESS faced tougher at The Meadowlands; beware.

Race 9

(6) ROCKAVELLIAN put in a nice effort last time out. Gelding has every right to put his best foot forward. (4) HOT RODDY was second best in his last try. (5) P H POWERPLAY just held on for win honors recently; don't overlook again.

Race 10

(3) MARTY PARTY has tactical speed. Pacing miss can boss these at her best. (1) CAROLS DESIRE comes off a qualifier here that was quite good; contender. (5) MACHAROUNDTHECLOCK could have a say with these.

Race 11

(2) MISTRESS VALENTINE was sent down the road last out for all the glory. Trotting mare can take another for score number eight in 2014. (1) ZOOMING did not do so well against open foes, but should find these to his liking. (4) MASTER PINE could be right in the mix.

Race 12

(6) MACH A WISH did quite well in her Philly finale. Pacing miss can boss these gals at her best. (1) VIRGIN MARY moves way down in class and draws the rail slot; main danger. (3) SET ME UP went down the road in her last effort.

Race #4

Our Tigress

OUR TIGRESS has been running very well in defeat in her recent losses on the dirt, sometimes deceptively so, as she has either run into trouble, been against a bias, or closed more strongly then the running line would indicate; should be able to run them all down late if she gets some pace help up front. SENSATIONAL VALUE failed in her three starts against winners but those were all on the turf, and she's back on the main track here, where she posted her lone career win; another who'd benefit from a quick, contested pace.

Race 3 - Maiden Claiming - 6.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $10500 Class Rating: 30

FOR ACCREDITED WEST VIRGINIA-BRED MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000, IF FOR $4,500, ALLOWED 2 LBS.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 4 WHERES YOUR SISTER 3/1

# 10 I'M IN A MOOD 7/2

# 9 FOOTINMOUTHAFFAIR 4/1

I think WHERES YOUR SISTER is a decent choice. Looks decent against this group of horses and will probably be one of the leaders. Her chances to win are much better this time out facing this easier field. I'M IN A MOOD - Look for a respectable pace improvement from this equine who enters now going off Lasix today. Have to bet on this mare with the reliable earnings per start in dirt sprint contests.

QUARTER HORSE 4F, FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD. WEIGHT, 120 LBS.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 5 FRESHSIDE (T) 6/5

# 1 PRIVATE SWING (T) 5/2

# 4 TR DASHING 5/2

I've got to go with FRESHSIDE (T). Recently Walker has been scorching which may give the edge to this mare. Must be given a chance - I like the figures from the last race. A solid 86 avg Equibase class rating may give this mare a distinct class edge against this field. PRIVATE SWING (T) - Overall the speed figures of this horse look solid in this contest. With Allen controlling the reins on him, this gelding will almost certainly be able to break out sharply in this race. TR DASHING - This jockey and conditioner team has produced some strong ROI numbers at this track. Castillo will most likely be able to get this gelding to break out sharply in here.

#2 ALARMING ANGEL (ML=8/1)
#8 R JAVY'S DREAM (ML=4/1)

ALARMING ANGEL - Lone speed horses can be tough to run down. Here's a lone speedy sort facing sluggish sorts today. Getting a weight break of 7 lbs from last race at Gulfstream on July 31st. This could make a difference right here. R JAVY'S DREAM - When Zayas and Ziadie team up on horses the win percentage has been fantastic at 45. A first timer with this conditioner. Ziadie wins a 44 percent of the time in these here situations. I always like to see a racer getting Lasix for the first time. Ziadie adds it on this one today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 MUNNINGSGOTMUSIC (ML=3/1), #7 ONE PROUD PRINCESS (ML=5/1), #6 EXCLUSIVE SYMPHONY (ML=6/1),

MUNNINGSGOTMUSIC - A closer like this one needs a ding-dong battle to set things up and she isn't likely to get one this time. ONE PROUD PRINCESS - Almost certainly won't make much of an impact today. EXCLUSIVE SYMPHONY - I'm prognosticating a less than stellar try out of her this time around.

#4 SUTTER'S FIND (ML=9/2)
#5 PLAYING WITH FIRE (ML=7/2)
#9 NATIVE BRITCHES (ML=5/1)
#2 SIDE PARTY RALPH (ML=4/1)

SUTTER'S FIND - This rider and trainer have a lucrative return on investment when they team up. Lone speed horses can be tough to run down. Here's a lone front running sort facing sluggish sorts today. Gelding won his last race here on July 27th as a shipper. I think he looks like a winner once again. Sullivan brings him back again. I advocate you stay with this hot gelding. PLAYING WITH FIRE - I think this gelding should run back to his winning race from Jul 9th, when he won a $4,000 Claiming race. This jockey/conditioner duo has been producing a very favorable ROI, right at +23. Ran last time out against a better group of horses at Thistledown. The move down in class should suit him well. NATIVE BRITCHES - This gelding is sent through the entry box right back into a race in less than 10 days; this is a positive sign. Gelding won on June 6th at this class and distance. This gelding is in nice form, having run a nice race on August 13th, finishing third. Faced tougher in the last race at Thistledown. Based on class ratings, this is a weaker field, so I will put this horse on my list of probable winners in this race. SIDE PARTY RALPH - When Mejias and Zielinski work together on horses the return on investment has been wonderful at +62.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 MIRACLE CREEK (ML=6/1), #1A STORM SNOW (ML=6/1), #6 ALEX'S MOJO (ML=8/1),

MIRACLE CREEK - Most unsatisfactory speed rating last time out at Thistledown at 1 mile. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will improve too much in today's race. STORM SNOW - I cannot play this continual non-winner. Gets the job completed now and then. ALEX'S MOJO - Nice race on August 2nd at Thistledown, but the fact that there are no workouts since has to make one a little worried.

#9 RHAGORI, a British-bred entry, qualifies as a TrackMaster PLUS "PowerPony," is the pace profile leader, and has produced "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in five straight starts, hitting the board in four of those "adventures, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in her 5th race back. #4 CUSTOMER BASE has also produced "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in each of her last five outings, and comes off a "POWER RUN PLACE" finish in his last start, missing a "Circle Trip" in that race by just a "photographed head" at the wire.

RACE #9 - SARATOGA RACE COURSE - 5:14 PM EASTERN POST

The Personal Ensign Stakes

9.0 FURLONGS DIRT GRADE I FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $500,000.00 PURSE

#6 CLOSE HATCHES
#7 PRINCESS OF SYLMAR
#3 MAJESTIC RIVER
#1 ANTIPATHY

For you folks who enjoy a little Thoroughbred Racing History to accompany your handicapping efforts on this Friday afternoon ... this race, which was originally known as the Firenze Stakes from 1948-85 and the John A. Morris Stakes from 1986-97, the Personal Ensign was renamed in honor of the undefeated champion filly owned and bred by Ogden Phipps. Her dramatic victory in the 1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff capped a 13-for-13 career as she became the first major horse in more than 80 years to accomplish such a feat. Here in the 65th renewal of this Grade I event, #6 CLOSE HATCHES has won an impressive 7 of 9 starts in her career to date racing at 9.0 furlongs on the dirt, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in five straight, including a quartet of "POWER RUN WINS" embedded in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Joel Rosario has been in her irons on 10 previous occasions, hitting the board in 9, winning 7 times, en route to a +111% return on investment in the process, and is back this afternoon here at "The Spa" for his 11th ride. #7 PRINCESS OF SYLMAR has posted a quartet of "POWER RUN BOARD HITS" in her last five outings, including "POWER RUN WINS" in her 3rd and 5th races back.
