KEY STAT: Spartak Moscow finished 12 points ahead of Rubin Kazan last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Rubin Kazan are a solid unit but have been weakened by the recent departures of Jose Salomon Rondon and Yann M’Vila and may struggle to get their campaign off to a winning start. Spartak Moscow have plenty of goals in their side with Yura Movsisyan and Jurado and can force a draw at the Kazan Arena.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Ural won just three of their 15 home games last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Ural were uninspiring at home last season - no team scored fewer goals on their own patch in the Russian Premier League - and the prices about them beating Mordovia Saransk makes no appeal. The visitors were promoted as impressive champions and look capable of beating a team who finished just three points above the relegation playoff places.

RECOMMENDATION: Mordovia Saransk

KEY STAT: Zenit recorded nine away victories in the league last season, more than any other team

EXPERT VERDICT: Zenit ended last season in great form to finish just a point behind champions CSKA and the ante-post title favourites can get off to the perfect start by beating newly-promoted Arsenal Tula. Andre Villas-Boas has added Ezequiel Garay to Zenit’s ranks and the team have looked in good heart in pre-season, so the away win looks value.

RECOMMENDATION: Zenit

KEY STAT: CSKA won 13 of their 15 home games last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Champions CSKA Moscow warmed up for their title defence with a 3-1 Super Cup victory over Rostov last weekend and it is difficult to look past them in their opening fixture. Torpedo Moscow were promoted via a playoff after finishing third in the second tier last season, but their away form was unspectacular and this looks a tough introduction.

RECOMMENDATION: CSKA Moscow

KEY STAT: Dinamo Moscow’s matches averaged 3.03 goals per game last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Dinamo Moscow were the second-highest scorers in the Russian top flight last season and Rostov’s games, especially on the road, were usually exciting too. The visitors found the net in seven of their last eight league games. Backing both teams to score looks the value.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Kuban Krasnodar’s six Russian Premier home wins last season all came against the bottom six

EXPERT VERDICT: Kuban should ruin Ufa's bow in the big time but a bet on a narrow home win looks best. Ufa's 3-1 promotion playoff second-leg defeat at Tom Tomsk was the first time they had conceded two goals for nine matches but they had already done the hard work by winning the first leg 5-1.

RECOMMENDATION: Kuban 2-1

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 5 FLEET CLASSIC 6/1

# 4 ROULETTE IT ROLL 10/1

# 6 PUTTINONAIRS 7/2

I've got to go with FLEET CLASSIC. Has formidable speed figures and has to be considered for a wager in this competition. Is a contender - given the 61 speed figure from her most recent race. A solid 85 avg Equibase class rating may give this mare a distinct class edge versus this field. ROULETTE IT ROLL - Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this equine look solid in this race. Will most likely come out strong - I have liked the way this mare has moved quickly to the lead recently. PUTTINONAIRS - This mare with Reid in the irons makes her a solid choice

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 7 HAMBURG GIG 9/2

# 4 TANGO BLUE 6/1

# 1A CHECKNHI 5/2

HAMBURG GIG is my choice. Has been running strongly lately and will most likely be on or close to the front end early on. Has been running in the most competitive company of the group recently. With a sound ROI of +16 this handler has shown very good results with entries running at this distance and surface. TANGO BLUE - He has earned quite good figures under today's conditions and ought to fare well versus this group of horses. Has very good Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. CHECKNHI - Should finish in the money without any trouble. Players ought to feel comfortable with this selection given Martinez's recent gains at the window.

Arlington - Race #9 - Post: 6:53pm - Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,500 Class Rating: 87

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#1 PROUD JACKSON (ML=8/1)
#3 ZAVILL (ML=10/1)
#8 SCORE BABY SCORE (ML=8/1)

PROUD JACKSON - This gelding is in superb form right now. Finished third in the last race and comes back soon. After the race aboard this animal on July 4th, the jock is going to be in touch with the gelding much better. For my money, a bullet workout is the best indicator of readiness there is. Look at that last one - 34.8. Very impressive. Just check out his most recent speed fig, 87. That one fits in this field. Had a strong closing move last time around the track, running the last quarter in less than 25 seconds. A similar race today, and it's straight to the winner's circle. 69-74-87 are last 3 speed ratings. Improving each time out is something he should do again in this race. ZAVILL - This gelding is in nice condition, having run a good race on Jul 11th, finishing first. When Slinger and Wainwright partner up on horses the ROI has been great at +31. 62-68-73 are last three Equibase speed figures. Improving each time out is something he should do again right here. SCORE BABY SCORE - The ROI when Montalvo and Perez team up is tremendous. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a return to racing.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 OH MY TODD (ML=5/2), #6 LETHAL (ML=7/2), #2 GHETTO CAT (ML=5/1),

OH MY TODD - This questionable contender hasn't been close to the winner at the wire of late. LETHAL - 7/2 is just too low of a reward to take on most any animal that has run poorly in back to back outings. This gelding hasn't had any recent success in sprint events. Tough to play him in this race. GHETTO CAT - 5/1 odds isn't enough for this one when examining the most recent efforts.

#4 RODERICK ROAD (ML=3/1)

RODERICK ROAD - Great chance for this pony. Solid late speed and should have good position. I like that last effort on July 12th at Charles Town where he finished second. Just check out his recent figure, 67. That one fits well in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 MR. OBERON (ML=5/2), #6 ROYALLY HEARTED (ML=9/2), #5 FOUR PROSPECTS (ML=6/1),

MR. OBERON - Don't believe this horse has what it takes to be victorious today. ROYALLY HEARTED - Speed figures of 67/60/45 are started on a downward course. Hasn't hit the board in any sprint contests recently. Improbable to see him doing it today either. Will be hard for this thoroughbred to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class rating, so put him on the likely underpriced contenders list. FOUR PROSPECTS - This equine doesn't have a tenacious spirit. Always finishes close, but no cigar. Charles Town has not been kind to this less than sharp equine.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - RODERICK ROAD - Brown is making good money with this horse. Utmost in earnings per start.

7.0 FURLONGS CUSHIONED TRACK THREE YEAR OLDS STAKES $200,000.00 PURSE

#11 ALERT BAY
#10 PATRIOTS RULE
#13 G .G. RYDER
#7 RED OUTLAW

#11 ALERT BAY has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in each of his last five outings, including back-to-back-to-back "POWER RUN WINS" in his 3rd through his 5th races back ... he's coming off a "POWER RUN PLACE" finish in his last start, missing a 4th "Circle Trip" in this recent streak of racing consistency by just a "photographed head" at the wire. Jockey Tyler Baze has been in his irons on four previous occasions, hitting the board in each, winning twice, en route to a +268% return on investment in the process, and is back this afternoon for his 5th ride. #10 PATRIOTS RULE has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in three of his last four "adventures," including a "POWER RUN WIN" in his 4th race back.

5½ FURLONGS TURF FILLIES AND MARES FOUR YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $100,000.00 PURSE

#3 FREE AS A BIRD
#5 MUNNINGS SISTER
#10 MADAME GIRY
#6 JEWEL OF A CAT

This race is named after the multiple-graded stakes winning mare trained by Hall of Famer H. Allen Jerkens, Caress, a daughter of Storm Cat, retired in 1996 with a record of 13-4-2 from 29 career starts, including victories in the Grade 3 Poker at Belmont Park as well as the Beaugay and Athenia, both Grade 3 events at Aqueduct Racetrack. Here in the 6th running of this stakes event, #3 FREE AS A BIRD is both the overall speed and pace profile leader in this field sprinting at, or about, today's distance of 5½ furlongs on the grass, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in five straight starts, winning three times in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Joel Rosario has been in her irons on three previous occasions, hitting the board in each, winning twice, en route to a +138% return on investment in the process, and is back today for his 4th ride, gunning for a "Hat Trick Win! #5 MUNNINGS SISTER, a 5-1 shot, has hit the board in four of her last five starts, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in her 4th race back.

# 4 RED STAR CATCH 5/2

# 2 FOX VALLEY ARMOR 3/1

# 5 THE OTHER CHEEK 6/1

Hard not to lean toward RED STAR CATCH as the top selection in this one. Earned a 83 speed fig last time out. A duplicate performance here should get the win this time. Talk about a dynamic duo, Palone and Faurot have some of the best driver-trainer figures at the track. Palone will be looking to score for this one, has been tearing it up in recent times. Win percent the past month is a sparkling 23. FOX VALLEY ARMOR - Performing competently, recorded a huge TrackMaster Speed Rating in his most recent contest (79). Deserves a shot given the successful win percent he sports. THE OTHER CHEEK - His 83 average has this gelding among the most competitive speed ratings this time. This standardbred could get the top prize here beginning from the The Meadows 5 hole.

# 4 CROSBYS CLAM BAKE 5/2

# 6 SEA RAVEN 15/1

# 1 CATHY'S PRINCESS 8/1

Hard not to lean toward CROSBYS CLAM BAKE as the top choice this time. This race could very well be controlled by this gelding. A single look at the avgerage speed rating will prove that. Unquestionably the class of the grouping with an average rating of 93. A nice pick. Many race players will recognize the excellent TrackMaster SR in the last outing. Stacks up against any horse in this field. SEA RAVEN - Not many folks know, but the 6 position here at Meadowlands has been outstanding for a well above average win clip. Not many knocks against this interesting entrant, let's give her a shot. CATHY'S PRINCESS - Sometimes you just have to go with an instinct, favor this one's chances.

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: DANA DEAREST (7th)

Spot Play: ITS NO SECRET (2nd)

Race 1

(4) MAJESTIC GINGER was on cruise in her latest before making a break. She would have been a going-away winner and will look to redeem herself. (9) DAMFOOLRMILLIONAIRE will need to overcome post nine, but is fresh off a win and remains at this level. (5) ADVERSITY has hit the board in each of his last two starts, draws well and was recently timed in 1:54 2/5.

Race 2

(8) ITS NO SECRET gets Jamieson in the bike, has a good record this season and may offer a fair price. (7) RUBIS PRESCOTT has won two of her last three and is fresh off a 1:51 3/5 winning effort. (3) BULLET POINT draws inside, won last week and has all kinds of back class.

Race 3

(6) DOUBLEDOWN GASS scored a new career best last week and has won two of his last three. (1) FORK has been trotting very speedy miles and gets major class relief. (5) NOBLE FLIGHT hasn't missed the board in five starts and is a logical option for the triactor.

Race 4

(2) VAL DI NOTO has won two straight, draws inside and won in this class last week. (3) SAM has a patented late kick, draws well and was a beaten favourite last week at this level. (1) STELLLLLLLA comes from the Menary barn, gets post relief and should offer a fair price.

Race 5

(6) POCKET TRIP is fresh off a win by open lengths, has terrific gate-speed and is capable of the class jump. (3) DEMENTED has a terrific record this season, draws inside and comes from top connections. (9) CHIVAREE HANOVER comes from the McNair barn and finished second last week in this class.

Race 6

(7) JB OUI OUI was timed in 1:53 in his most recent outing, drops in class and comes from a high percentage barn. (4) CALIPARI has been racing terrific as of late and hasn't missed the board in his last five starts. (8) ZEUS LIGHTNING has all kinds of back class to offer, is versatile and may offer a fair price.

Race 7

(10) DANA DEAREST has won five of nine this season, comes from the Coleman barn and will offer a very low price. (1) REGALLY READY gets major post relief and was a game third last week with a :26 3/5 final quarter. (5) POPPIES PRIDE moves up in class after a career best victory.

Race 8

(1) DREAMFAIR ECLIPSE gets major post relief, comes from a high percentage barn and has a patented late kick in the mile. (4) RUB N TUG has back class and was a game second last week in this class. (5) JAN IT JACKSON makes her fifth start of the season and will look to get on the board. She drops in class, is versatile and has some upside.

Race 9

(7) VOELZ HANOVER has won three of nine this season, has over $1.5 million of back class and has terrific gate-speed. (1) LIGHTS GO OUT has an unmatchable late kick in the mile and was a winner in this class two back. (6) HOPE FOR PADDY has won two straight, moves up in class and comes from the Montini barn.

Race 10

(9) DIAMONDS FOR LIFE has the speed, gets Christoforou in the bike and should offer a price in this wide-open contest. (8) LOVE DETECTIVE comes from the Takter barn, shows versatility and gets Hall of Famer Condren in the bike. (6) HUNKOFBURNINLOVE was a winner two back, enjoys leaving the gate and continues to offer a high price.

Race 11

(6) PAID IN CASH is undefeated in her career so far and is very capable of the class jump. (5) SHES DANGEROUS comes from the Alagna barn, draws in the middle of the gate and was a beaten favourite last week in this class. (4) LINDYSBATHINBEAUTY has won two of her last three, comes from top connections and has a terrific record this season.

MEET STATS: 102 - 326 / $574.00 BEST BETS: 16 - 25 / $57.80

Best Bet: ARTSPEAK (5th)

Spot Play: AND HEEZ PERFECT (1st)

Race 1

(5) AND HEEZ PERFECT gets some clear class relief after facing better foes at Pocono and Philly. I'd expect Mitchell Walker to point this gelding down the road. (2) UPFRONTSTRIKESGOLD has gone some good miles recently and should enjoy the inside post. (3) CURRENT CRISIS is handled by a very competent amateur driver.

Race 2

(2) SPEAK TO ME is perfect in three career starts and really jumps off the page in this spot. (4) CRAZY BEAUTIFUL was in tough from post nine versus a very fast filly last time. She could give the top choice a run for her money. (1) ANNALIINA should be fast enough to contend. (5) BEE THE QUEEN has run into some problems lately but does pick up Campbell tonight.

Race 3

(4) JOSIE'S JOY is a half-sister to 2013 Hambo runner-up Smilin Eli. She comes off a nice effort and doesn't face any killers. (5) KELSEY'S KEEPSAKE has raced well in each of her three career starts. (11) THAT'S SO IRONIC chased nicely in a fast mile last time and is certainly eligible to improve. (1) PAD PRINCESS won by open lengths in a slow time to begin her career; gets tested Friday.

Race 4

(5) SATURDAY MORNINGS might be best suited on the lead and she wasn't getting there versus the speedy Mission Brief; good spot. (1) DYNAMITE DAME emerged from that pack to finish second to Mission Brief last time. (3) ALLERAGE STAR gets a new driver and I can see Corey Callahan moving her up a notch.

Race 5

(2) ARTSPEAK is a very talented son of Western Ideal. He should win as he pleases. (1) WELL WELL WELL has had his issues staying on the track but clearly possesses ability. The fact that Tetrick chose off the Toscano-trained #5 for this colt says something. (6) STOVER gets a driver switch to Gingras. (7) MCARDLES LIGHTNING comes off a speedy 1:51 mile at Pocono but got a good trip that start; maybe.

Race 6

(1) SCREAM AND SHOUT has been idling on the rim lately. She is better than that and perhaps the switch to Johnny Takter will help. (3) STRUCK BY LINDY finds a relatively easy spot and just may be the favorite. (1B) DONATELLA HANOVER has shown she can play with this caliber of competition. (5) MY INSPIRATION was second last time but had no excuse for not winning.

Race 7

(3) JOHNNY Z won a C-2 final last week that may have included a tougher group than he tackles tonight; edge. (5) HANG TEN has proven to be very competitive at this level. (7) ANDREW LUCK only needs a clean trip to be a major player.

Race 8

(3) FLY ANGEL FLY is an expensive yearling who qualified well for Hall of Famer Jimmy Takter. His brother is in from Sweden to drive and I can recall him taking a division of the Kindergarten series with Yoga last year at huge odds. (1) BY AND BY HANOVER won her career debut for Svanstedt and is the likely favorite. (10) SHAFINA HANOVER has displayed some ability and adds Ron Pierce.

Race 9

(1) FRENCH LAUNDRY looks tough to beat on paper. (6) CURFEW qualified well for Svanstedt and would be no surprise; must use. (8) ALDEBARAN EAGLE comes off an improved effort.

Race 10

(6) LOVELY JAN wasn’t able to stay with Lock Down Lindy, the likely second choice in the Merrie Annabelle final on Saturday. This looks like a good spot for her debut. (3) LADY CLARABELLA raced evenly to start her career and could show more now. (10) FLIRTING FILLY has obvious speed but drew poorly. (8) ILUVMYJIMMYCHOOS looks good if you ignore the break last time.

Race 11

(3) TRUE BLUE STRIDE hasn’t gotten his act together yet but has some ability. This looks like the right spot to help him shine. (2) WHEELS AH SMOKIN sports two good race lines to date; big threat. (1) THE BANK could be the one to beat if he minds his manners. (7) HABITAT proved he can trot fast in his last start. Will he stay on stride?

Race 12

(1) MUSCLE DIAMOND added hobbles and minded his manners last time. (5) SOUTHWIND MOZART exits Sire Stakes competition and should race well if he behaves. (2) FALK ON HILL S is another who could break but has some ability.

Race 13

(4) CROSBY’S CLAM BAKE stays at the same level but clearly catches a softer group. (1) CATHY’S PRINCESS made a costly break last time. She fits with this bunch. (10) B L CLASS ACT has been on a roll but is stuck in post 10.

By Brewster Smith

DRF HARNESS

MEET STATS: 220 - 853 / $1,429.30 BEST BETS: 18 - 71 / $76.30

Best Bet: MONKEY ON MY WHEEL (6th)

Spot Play: POLITICAL DESIRE (11th)

Race 1

(3) DOUBLESHOTASCOTCH was very sharp for the victory in his last try. Gelding can boss these for his second straight score. (7) BIG TIME ROCKS just got up for win honors recently. (1) PICTONIAN PRIDE should fare well from the rail slot.

Race 2

(1) FLEX THE MUSCLE gets class and post relief. Trotter is poised to get back on the winning track. (8) BASTILLE did show speed from the outside slot; player. (4) ELIN put in a mild rally in her latest.

Race 3

(2) NO GIN gets a cozy post to work with. Capable of taking this with Sears at the controls. (1) AUSSIE REACTOR A Gelding could have a say from the fence. (5) LONG FIGHT HANOVER has good speed and there's a good chance he can be a factor with these.

Race 4

(2) WAYWARD SON Easy victory in his last start. Seven-year-old seems to be in fine form and two straight is clearly not out of the question. (5) JW RACER is better than his last trip. (1) SOUTHWIND CHASE The rail and speed puts this gelding in the mix.

Race 5

(1) AS YALL LIKE IT has good early trot. She is back in the 1-hole where this gal got the job done two starts ago. (4) ROSSINI moves down the scale and that could help his cause. (3) BLACKTUXWHITESOCKS just missed the score in his latest.

Race 6

(8) MONKEY ON MY WHEEL Very consistent pacing mare can mow these down at her best. (5) CAMILLE put in a late bid for the show spot last time out. (7) ROBIN CRUISER has wheeled off two straight victories.

Race 7

(1) PUTNAMS ATTACK put in a good effort in his last one. Gelding receives the best of the draw and could get back to his winning ways. (2) JUST THAT & (5) COSMICPEDA both of these contenders get post relief; watch out.

Race 8

(4) THERAPUTIC Moving up in class could be a good sign for this trotter to take home all the bacon based on his last two starts here. (2) MUGSHOT JESS could be in the mix. (6) HARBOR POINT will need a better trip than in his last start.

Race 9

(5) HOT RODDY closed well in his last one. Gelding has every right to move forward in this event. (3) FUTURE CHARACTER drops in class and has fine speed; threat. (1) BACK TO THE WEST was sent down the road last out for all the glory.

Race 10

(5) REPORT FOR DUTY N Old pro should be well suited cutting back to one mile. (4) ABOMINABLE SNOWPAN is better than his last try. (2) ER ROOM moves back inside where he went down the road three starts ago.

Race 11

(6) POLITICAL DESIRE got the job done in his Pocono finale. Trotter is very capable of taking two in a row & Brennan signs on to drive. (2) BOUNCING BAX came close to getting the job done last out; main danger. (1) POSSESSED FASHION gets class relief; beware.

Race 12

(5) COFFEE ADDICT Pacing miss closed too late and had to settle for show honors. Ready to roll tonight. (1) VENUS DELIGHT has fine speed and the rail slot can help his cause. (2) BEST BOSS could land a share of the purse.
