Junior forward Nick Ward has been a beast in the paint for coach Tom Izzo, averaging 21.8 points on 35-of-43 shooting over the last four contests, including a career-best 28 points on 12-of-13 accuracy against Green Bay. The Spartans' backcourt of Joshua Langford (16.4 points, 43.3 percent 3-point shooting) and Cassius Winston (16.1, 39.4 percent, 7.9 assists) is extremely potent offensively, with Winston one of the better distributors of the basketball in the country. In Tuesday's 71-64 win, Oregon overcame a short bench, slow start and slow finish to defeat Florida A&M, getting a season-high 16 points from Victor Bailey Jr. "It was a disappointing finish, and our start was poor," said Oregon coach Dana Altman, who played without forwards Bol Bol, Abu Kigab and Kenny Wooten. "But it just shows how far we have to go as a team. We have a lot of work to do, a lot of things we have to work on." Baylor, coming off a 58-49 victory at Arizona on Saturday, was caught sleeping Tuesday, as the Bears scored one point over the last four minutes and let an eight-point lead slip away in a 59-58 loss to Stephen F. Austin. "As exciting as our last game was, that was how disappointing this game was," Baylor coach Scott Drew said afterward. "We couldn't throw it in the ocean, couldn't make free throws, turned it over. With all that being said, if we guard the second half like we did in the first half, especially in the first eight minutes, we win the game."

Junior forward Tres Tinkle and senior guard Stephen Thompson Jr. combined for 41 points and shot 13-for-24 from the field in Monday's 82-67 victory over Pepperdine, prompting Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle to tell reporters: "Same shots. They just went in."

UC Irvine has all five starters returning for a team picked to finish first in the Big West, and the Anteaters have won 10 straight road games - the second-longest such active streak in the country.
Butler trailed by 14 points in the first half to Presbyterian on Tuesday as the Blue Hose made 13 of their first 17 shots, but Bulldogs point guard Aaron Thompson scored a career-high 18 points, Kamar Baldwin added 15 and the defense buckled down in the second half to post a 76-67 home victory. "We have to give Presbyterian credit. We watched the film of their games with Marquette and UCLA where they played well and hung around until late," Butler coach LaVall Jordan said afterward. "They came out and shot 65 percent in the first half. We weren't prepared and that's on us. I thought we responded well in the second half and held them to 25 points. It's good to get tested, to have to grind it out, and find a way to win." The Anteaters, off to their best start since going 11-2 in 2000-01, beat Eastern Michigan 52-48 on Wednesday as junior guard Max Hazzard led the offense with 14 points and the defense held the Eagles to 34.7 percent shooting while outrebounding them 47-26. "We were terrific defensively and on the glass and sometimes you can win that way," UC Irvine coach Russell Turner said afterward. We believe that defensive rebounding can win and tonight it did that. The way we outrebounded EMU showed our team's intensity and will to win and I am very pleased with that."

The Bowling Green Falcons pound the boards with abandon, although other aspects of their game may leave a lot to be desired. Are they a serious contender in the Mid-American Conference? They may go about as far as Demajeo Wiggins takes them.

ABOUT WESTERN CAROLINA: Coming off a 13-19 season competing in the Southern Conference, Western Carolina saw its long-time (13 years) head coach, Larry Hunter, retire and then die a couple of months later, bringing a somber mood over the campus. Mark Prosser is the first-year head coach, and thus far he has guided them to a 3-10 record. They have lost by 20 or more points to the likes of Wright State, SMU, Jacksonville State, North Carolina State, and High Point. However, they have had their moments, such as the time they took Furman, currently unbeaten and ranked #24 by the Associated Press, into double-overtime before losing by two points. Their last game was on Tuesday night, a 78-60 loss to Iowa, in which they came in through the back door to cover a 23.5-point spread. In that game, Marc Gosselin had 17 points. Gosselin, from Lyon, France, had more of a prominent role in last year's team, but his minutes are down, and he’s averaging 6.1 points per game. Clearly, the guy taking the lead role here is Carlos Dotson, who had 27 points and 14 rebounds in that loss to Furman and is averaging 13.1 points and 8.9 boards per game. He is burly (6-7, 265 pounds) and ranks 31st in Defensive Rebounding Percentage. Matt Halvorson is the second-leading scorer and shoots 84.6% from the line, but otherwise, Western Carolina is awful from the charity stripe, making just 57.1% of their attempts. They also don't intimidate opponents on defense in any way, shape or form, ranking dead last in the country in Blocked Shot Percentage.
ABOUT BOWLING GREEN: An 82-57 win over Findlay brought the Falcons' record to 6-5 straight-up (4-5 ATS). Justin Turner had 22 points and Dylan Frye added 16, as fourteen different members of the roster saw action. Demajeo Wiggins had 14 points and eight assists in 22 minutes, and he could have notched a double-double if he had played enough. That is somewhat significant, because going into the game, Wiggins had nine double-doubles, which led the nation. Wiggins is also the top rebounder in Division I ball, and the Falcons as a team have averaged 46.2 rebounds per game, ranking second nationally. They are #1 in the MAC in both defensive AND offensive rebounds per contest. Wiggins has an opportunity to become the third player in Bowling Green history to register both 1000 points and 1000 rebounds in his career. The others were Hall of Famer Nate Thurmond and Cornelius Cash, who also played in the NBA. The Falcons have been very tough defensively at home, allowing lower than 36% shooting to the opposition. Even though they have an error-prone team in front of them on Friday night, Bowling Green is not a squad that has forced a lot of turnovers (only 16.5% of possessions). And it's not likely that they will extract much of an edge at the free-throw line either, as they shoot only 62.6%.
EXTRA POINTS
1. Western Carolina turns the ball over on 27.4% of its possessions. Among the 353 Division I teams, only UNC-Asheville has more turnovers on a percentage basis. Western Carolina beat UNCA 71-59 on December 8. And ironically, Asheville turned it over only eight times.

Oklahoma State will look to snap its four-game losing streak Friday when the Cowboys welcome Central Arkansas to Stillwater. Oklahoma State is coming off its worst setback of the season Sunday to No. 22 Nebraska after a two-point halftime deficit turned into a 79-56 blowout loss.
A bright spot for Oklahoma State in an otherwise ugly defeat Sunday was the play of freshman Yor Anei, who posted career highs of 17 points and eight rebounds while going 7-for-10 from the floor. Anei has been a force in the paint for the Cowboys all season as the 6-10 forward boasts a 72.1 shooting percentage and entered Thursday tied for 19th in the country with 2.6 blocks per game - third-most among first-year players. The Cowboys have been one of the best long-distance shooting teams in Division I this season but suffered through a 2-for-15 performance from 3-point range Sunday after entering the game ranked 11th in the country with a 41.6 conversion rate from behind the arc. Central Arkansas will look to end its season-long five-game road trip on a winning note Friday after the Bears fell to 1-7 away from home with an 86-53 setback to Indiana on Wednesday.

ABOUT CENTRAL ARKANSAS (4-7): Sophomore Hayden Koval was the only Central Arkansas player to score in double-figures against the Hoosiers as the 7-footer hit four triples en route to 16 points. "Hayden has a lot of confidence the last couple of games," Bears' associate coach Anthony Boone told reporters. "He shot the ball well, and played well. We're excited about that, and we need to get a couple of other guys going." Boone is likely referencing sophomore guard DeAndre Jones, who leads Central Arkansas in scoring (13.1) but has combined to score 13 points on 3-of-17 shooting over his last two games after netting a career-high 26 points in the Bears' lone road win against Little Rock on Dec. 8.
