KEY STAT: PSG have won nine of their last ten away league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Paris St-Germain have opened up a seven-point lead in the French top flight and can increase the lead by easily winning on the road at Rennes. Laurent Blanc's side have banked 16 points from 18 on their travels and should easily account for their seventh-placed hosts, who haven't won a league game for six weeks.

RECOMMENDATION: PSG-PSG double result

KEY STAT: Atletico have won three of their four La Liga away fixtures

EXPERT VERDICT: Winless in their last three games, Deportivo will not be looking forward to facing Atletico. The visitors have only dropped points on three occasions this season but those came against top-five teams Real Madrid, Barcelona and Villarreal. Atletico beat Valencia 2-1 last time when the winning margin could easily have been wider and they are expected to triumph again.

RECOMMENDATION: Atletico

KEY STAT: Bayern's GD is plus 29 after ten matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Eintracht Frankfurt lost 1-0 away to third-tier Erzgebirge Aue in the German Cup on Tuesday and are unlikely to fare any better when hosting Bayern Munich. Armin Veh's side lost 5-1 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach in their last home game and could soon be trailing against Bayern, who have won all of their ten league fixtures.

RECOMMENDATION: Bayern-Bayern double result

KEY STAT: There have been 19 goals in the six Brentford Championship home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Go for three or more goals in what should be an entertaining derby at Griffin Park. The Bees of Brentford look like they’re buzzing again, winning three matches in a week, while a 3-0 success over MK Dons on Saturday must have lifted QPR’s spirits after a miserable run.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Both teams have scored in Cheltenham’s last six games

EXPERT VERDICT: This is a mouthwatering clash at the top of the National League with little to choose between the two. Grimsby have lost one of nine home league games, while Cheltenham have lost just one of nine on the road. However, both sides are in rich goalscoring form so goals should be on menu.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Wolves have conceded seven goals in their past three games

EXPERT VERDICT: Back Birmingham to make it four straight defeats for Wolves in this west Midlands derby at St Andrew’s. The Blues had won four on the spin before Saturday’s loss at Hull and they claimed the spoils in last April’s renewal of this clash, winning 2-1.

RECOMMENDATION: Birmingham

Friday's Tip Sheet
By Brian Edwards

Louisville at Wake Forest

As of Wednesday, most betting shops had Louisville (3-4 straight up, 4-3 against the spread) listed as an 11.5-point favorite with a total of 42. The Demon Deacons were +360 on the money line (risk $100 to win $360).

Wake Forest (3-5 SU, 3-5 ATS) has lost back-to-back contests and four of its last five, including a 35-17 home loss to North Carolina State this past Saturday. The Wolfpack took the cash as a nine-point road favorite, while the 52 combined points jumped ‘over’ the 43.5-point tally. The Demon Deacons gave up four touchdown plays of 57 yards or longer in the first quarter alone, falling behind 28-0.

Wake Forest QB Kendall Hinton completed 12-of-22 passes against N.C. St. for 107 yards. He rushed 13 times for 75 yards and a pair of TDs. For the season, the true freshman has rushed for 330 yards and six TDs while averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Hinton has connected on just 54.4 percent of his throws for 812 yards with a 2/4 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Louisville lost three one-possession games to start the season. Bobby Petrino’s squad dropped a 31-24 decision against Auburn at the Georgia Dome in the season opener. Next, the Cardinals lost at home to Houston (34-31) and Clemson (20-17), but they responded with consecutive triumphs vs. Samford (45-3) and at N.C. State (20-13).

After losing by a 41-21 count at FSU, Louisville won a 17-14 decision over Boston College at Papa John’s Stadium this past weekend. However, the Cards failed to take the cash as seven-point home ‘chalk.’ The U of L defense dominated the Eagles, limiting them to 79 yards of total offense and -14 rushing yards. BC mustered just four first downs and got one of its TDs on a blocked punt. Petrino’s bunch was unable to cover the number due to four turnovers. Lamar Jackson threw for 230 yards and ran for a TD, but he was sacked seven times and intercepted twice. U of L’s defense also produced seven sacks with Trevon Young taking the QB down twice. Keith Kelsey had 4.5 tackles for loss, while Sheldon Rankins scored on a fumble return.

Jackson has rushed for a team-best 482 yards and six TDs, averaging 4.9 YPC. The true freshman signal caller has been less successful through the air, completing only 55.4 percent of his passes for 1,135 yards with a 6/7 TD-INT ratio.

As a home underdog during Dave Clawson’s tenure, Wake Forest owns a 5-3 spread record. The Deacs have lost outright in three of four home games this season, going 2-2 versus the number.

U of L owns a 3-1 spread record in four games as a road favorite on Petrino’s watch. The Cards are 1-1 both SU and ATS in a pair of road assignments this year, winning at N.C. State (20-13) and losing at FSU (41-21).

The ‘under’ is 4-2-1 overall for U of L, going 4-1 in its last five games. The Cardinals have seen the ‘under’ go 1-1 in in their two previous road assignments. They have seen their games average combined scores of 47.3 points per game.

The ‘over’ is 4-3-1 overall for Wake Forest, 2-1-1 in its home outings. The Demon Deacons have seen the ‘over’ hit in back-to-back games. Their games have averaged a combined score of 42.0 PPG.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

East Carolina at Connecticut

As of Wednesday, most books had East Carolina (4-4 SU, 4-4 ATS) installed as a seven-point ‘chalk’ with a total of 51. The Huskies were +220 on the money line (risk $100 to win $220).

UConn (3-5 SU, 3-5 ATS) has lost back-to-back games and four of its last five both SU and ATS, including a 37-13 setback at Cincinnati last Saturday as a 10.5-point underdog. Bryant Shirreffs completed only 12-of-27 passes for merely 87 yards and was intercepted once. He rushed 17 times for 90 yards. The defense gave up 612 yards.

UConn owns wins over Villanova (20-15), Army (22-17) and UFC (40-13). The Huskies have lost at Missouri (9-6), vs. Navy (28-18), at BYU (30-13) vs. USF (28-20) and at Cincy.

Ruffin McNeill’s squad has wins vs. Towson (28-20), vs. Va. Tech (35-28), at SMU (49-23) and vs. Tulsa (30-17). ECU has lost at Florida (31-24), at Navy (45-21), at BYU (45-38) and vs. Temple (24-14). The Pirates failed to cover the number as three-point home favorites against the Owls, who overcame a 14-10 deficit by scoring a pair of TDs in the last 3:31 of the fourth quarter last Thursday in Greenville.

ECU had more total offense (378-322) than Temple, but it couldn’t overcome a pair of turnovers and a blocked punt. The Pirates’ defense limited Temple RB Jahad Thomas, the AAC’s leading rusher, to a season-low 66 yards on 20 carries. Chris Hairston ran for 65 yards and one TD on just eight carries in the losing effort. Junior QB Blake Kemp threw for 272 yards and one TD, but he was also intercepted once. Isaiah Jones had 10 receptions for 106 yards.

Kemp became the starter when Kurt Benkert went down with a season-ending injury in August. Kemp has completed 70.1 percent of his passes for 1,823 yards with an 11/7 TD-INT ratio. Juco transfer QB James Summers usually get a few series in each game, in addition to snaps in short-yardage situations. Summers has connected on 32-of-48 throws for 428 yards with a 4/1 TD-INT ratio. Summers has also rushed for 383 yards and six TDs while averaging 6.4 YPC.

Hairston has run for a team-best 525 yards and seven TDs while averaging 4.4 YPC. Jones has a team-high 61 catches for 701 yards and three TDs. Hairston has 24 receptions for 159 yards and one TD.

ECU WR Daquan Barnes is ‘questionable’ due to a hip injury, while WR Jimmy Williams is ‘out’ with an ankle injury. Williams had 14 receptions for 118 yards and two TDs in the first five games. Starting OT Dontae Livingston is ‘out’ with an undisclosed injury.

The UConn offense revolves around Shirreffs, a sophomore transfer from North Carolina State, and sophomore RB Arkeel Newsome, who has rushed for a team-high 408 yards and four TDs while averaging 5.0 YPC. Shirreffs has connected on 62.0 percent of his passes for 1,723 yards with a 7/5 TD-INT ratio. Shirreffs has rushed for 342 yards and a pair of scores.

As a home underdog since Bob Diaco took over in 2014, the Huskies have compiled a 2-6 record both SU and ATS.

ECU has limped to an abysmal 4-9 spread record in 13 games as a road favorite during McNeill’s tenure.

The ‘over’ is 5-3 overall for ECU, 4-0 in its road assignments. However, the Pirates have seen the ‘under’ cash in back-to-back games. Their games have produced a combined points average of 59.0 points per game.

The ‘under’ is 6-2 overall for the Huskies, 3-1 in their four home outings. Their games have averaged a combined score of 41.1 PPG.

ESPNU will have the broadcast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets

There are two other games on Friday’s slate, including Louisiana Tech at Rice and Wyoming at Utah State. As of Wednesday, most spots had the Bulldogs installed as 12.5-point road ‘chalk.’ The Aggies were favored by 28 over the Cowboys. Rice is 11-9-1 ATS in 21 games as a home underdog during David Bailiff’s tenure.

Old Dominion is the nation’s only remaining team that’s winless for our purposes with a 0-7 spread record. Toledo is the only undefeated team ATS with a 6-0-1 mark.

North Carolina State QB Jacoby Brissett has a 10/1 TD-INT ratio this season. Since arriving at N.C. St. as a transfer from Florida, Brissett has a 33/6 TD-INT ratio with four rushing scores. He will lead the Wolfpack up against unbeaten Clemson this weekend as a 10-point home underdog. The Tigers had failed to cover in four consecutive road favorite situations until blasting Miami 58-0 in South Florida last weekend.

Washington State is just 3-6 ATS in nine games as a home underdog during Mike Leach’s tenure. However, the Cougars are playing their best football since Leach took over going into Saturday’s Pac-12 showdown vs. Stanford. As of Wednesday, the Cardinal was a 12-point ‘chalk’ at most spots. As a road favorite on David Shaw’s watch, Stanford has posted a 12-8 spread record.

Preview: Avalanche (3-5) at Hurricanes (4-6)

Date: October 30, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

After closing out a lengthy road trip with a pair of strong defensive efforts, the Carolina Hurricanes open a homestand against a team that's had trouble scoring goals of late.

The Hurricanes aim for a third consecutive win and season sweep of the Colorado Avalanche as they begin a four-game stretch in Raleigh on Friday.

After Cam Ward made 25 saves in Tuesday's 3-1 victory over Detroit, Carolina (4-6-0) held the New York Islanders to 19 shots in Thursday's 3-2 overtime triumph that concluded a 4-3-0 trip. It's the Hurricanes' first win streak of the season and followed losses in Los Angeles and San Jose by a combined 8-2 score.

"I was more than pleased with the trip and now we just have to make an effort as a group of 23 guys to do it each and every day," coach Bill Peters told the NHL's official website.

Ward also was in top form in Carolina's Oct. 21 visit to Denver, turning aside 26 shots before Victor Rask scored 1:49 into overtime to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 win.

The Hurricanes are 0-2-0 at PNC Arena but have won five straight against Colorado (3-5-1) in Raleigh, where the Avs last won Jan. 12, 2008.

Colorado has scored just seven goals during that skid and has the same amount over a current five-game stretch, losing the first four before Semyon Varlamov's season-high 34 saves made the difference in Thursday's 2-1 win at Tampa Bay.

The win was Varlamov's 108th with the Avalanche, trailing only coach Patrick Roy for the most in franchise history, and earned the previously struggling goaltender a second straight start.

'He seemed really under control,' Roy said. 'He had a strong night from the start to the end. He made some great saves.'

Varlamov entered the game with a 3.93 goals-against average through five starts and had lost his last three, including an 18-save effort against Carolina. He does own a 2.04 GAA in nine career meetings with the Hurricanes and has allowed two goals or fewer in each of the last eight.

Nathan MacKinnon and Alex Tanguay supported Varlamov's latest outing with a goal and an assist each, but the Avs went 0 for 6 on the power play after failing to convert five chances in Tuesday's 4-1 loss at Florida. Colorado is 2 for 29 with the man advantage over its last six games after connecting on 5 of 10 opportunities through the first three.

"We'll take the two points; it's two points we desperately need right now," Tanguay said. "We have to continue to play with that same urgency. We have to want the puck and want to make plays with it and hopefully bounces will come our way."

The Avalanche have been struggling on the penalty kill as well, having yielded five goals over the last three games when short-handed. The Hurricanes, however, are 1 for 21 on the power play over their last six.

Carolina did get two clutch even-strength goals against the Islanders, with Chris Terry forging a 2-all tie with 5:04 remaining in regulation and Ron Hainsey recording the winner midway through overtime. Jordan Staal assisted on both after being held without a point in the first nine games.

Preview: Blue Jackets (2-8) at Capitals (6-2)

Date: October 30, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Following one of the worst starts in NHL history, the Columbus Blue Jackets may finally be on the cusp of finding their form.

The Blue Jackets and new coach John Tortorella try to continue turning things around with a third straight victory Friday night on the road against the Washington Capitals.

Columbus (2-8-0) is still tied for the fewest points in the league, but two straight wins following a miserable opening two weeks has turned frustration into optimism.

"Every team is going to go through ups and downs," veteran forward David Clarkson said. "We just went through ours early. It was one of the hardest things we ever went through. But it makes teams better. Hopefully, it makes us better."

The Jackets showed during Tuesday's 3-1 win at New Jersey that they can prevail when not at their best. Despite a season-low 14 shots, they never let up the defensive intensity and were rewarded with three straight goals in the third period to improve to 2-1-0 on a four-game trip and since Tortorella replaced Todd Richards on the bench.

"Those are important games to win," Tortorella said. "We'll be on the other side of it, where a team outplays you and you find a way to win. We'll be on the other side of that sometime during the year, so we'll take it and go from there.

"These are good things as we try to climb the steps."

Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves and looked solid after posting a 4.45 goals-against average and .852 save percentage in his first seven starts.

"His game has slowly come along here," Tortorella said.

Boone Jenner has scored half of his team-leading six goals in the last two contests.

"We just want to play the style we want to play," Jenner said. "You see that at times but obviously we can be better at it."

Washington (6-2-0) will look to be better after its five-game winning streak ended with Wednesday's 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh.

The Capitals had scored three or more goals in all but one of their first seven games and were coming off a 7-4 win at Edmonton, but they stalled after Evgeny Kuznetsov opened the scoring in the third period.

"I didn't think we were real sharp," coach Barry Trotz told the team's official website. "We always talk about playing fast, and we weren't playing fast early."

Despite their coach's analysis, the Capitals don't seem too concerned.

"Our main thing is focusing on what's made us successful and realize that this isn't much of a step back," said Braden Holtby, who has a 1.61 GAA in his last five starts. "It's a game we can learn from. Things didn't quite go our way but we'll have a better performance next game."

Kuznetsov, who enjoyed a five-point night against the Oilers, has four goals and six assists in the last four contests.

Teammate Alex Ovechkin has gone two straight without a goal after scoring once in each of his first five. He had a pair of two-goal games against the Blue Jackets last season.

Bobrovsky stopped 39 shots during a 3-2 overtime win at Washington on Dec. 11, then yielded nine goals while losing two straight home starts against the Capitals.

Preview: Maple Leafs (1-5) at Rangers (6-2)

Date: October 30, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The New York Rangers have been impressive since losing to the NHL's top team, and they have an opportunity to keep it going against one of the league's worst.

The Toronto Maple Leafs visit Madison Square Garden on Friday night winless in their last four games, while the Rangers have at least a point from their last five.

Since a 3-0 loss in Montreal on Oct. 15, New York (6-2-2) has gone 3-0-2 with a 15-6 scoring advantage. The victories have all come by at least three goals with Sunday's 4-1 win over Calgary beginning a three-game homestand. With four days off between the first two, the Rangers might have a better shot at honing in on the kind of completion Dan Girardi wants to see.

"Our record is really good," Girardi after the team played three games in four nights. "But at the same time, we know in here that maybe one or two games we played a 60-minute game really hard. I think you need to find a way to get that 60-minute game."

Girardi scored his first goal of the season while Oscar Lindberg got his fifth. The rookie center, who turned 24 Thursday, leads the Rangers in goals and points (seven) after appearing in one game last season.

"There's no doubt he's found a way to be at the right place at the right time to get us some timely goals," coach Alain Vigneault said of Lindberg, who evened the score at 1 in the second period. "That's pretty impressive. That goal definitely got us going."

The Rangers were more in need of a defensive-zone presence last season against the Maple Leafs.

They dropped two of three in the series, and each game featured nine goals. The Maple Leafs had 15 of them, including six in the first game against Henrik Lundqvist before he was pulled late in the second period. Then-backup Cam Talbot played the rest of the series. Since the start of 2011-12, Lundqvist is 3-4-1 with a 3.50 goals-against average and .873 save percentage against Toronto.

He should be plenty rested this time around, having last played in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss in Philadelphia. He stopped 46 of 48 shots and has a .949 save percentage over a 1-1-2 span.

Toronto (1-5-2) last played in Monday's 4-3 home loss to Arizona, dropping it to 0-3-1 since a 6-3 win in Columbus on Oct. 16. That stands as the Maple Leafs' only triumph, and they're tied at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with the Blue Jackets at four points.

A struggling penalty kill has been the difference in consecutive regulation losses, allowing four goals in eight chances in games collectively decided by three goals. For the season, their 71.9 percent kill ranks near the bottom of the league, though the Rangers' power play (16.0 percent) isn't turning heads after finishing 21st with a 16.8 mark last season.

"The (penalty kill) has to be better," said Morgan Rielly, who scored for a second straight game along with James van Riemsdyk. "We have to continue to work at that and improve on that. That might've been the difference in the game."

Rielly also had two goals in his last game against the Rangers, while New York's Mats Zuccarello matched him and has three in his last two versus the Maple Leafs.

After the struggling James Reimer played against the Coyotes, Jonathan Bernier figures to face New York. Bernier has been slightly better with a 3.02 GAA and .902 save percentage, but he's 0-4-1. As a starter, he's 2-1-2 with a 3.21 GAA and .918 GAA against the Rangers.

Preview: Flyers (3-3) at Sabres (2-7)

Date: October 30, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers already lost to the Buffalo Sabres earlier this week. A change of venue could prove beneficial Friday night.

The Flyers attempt to avoid a three-game slide by continuing their road success against the Sabres.

Philadelphia (4-3-2) won four of five games before falling 4-3 in overtime against Buffalo (3-7-0) on Tuesday. The Flyers followed that with another lackluster effort against another team that failed to reach the playoffs last season, losing 4-1 to New Jersey on Thursday.

"We didn't deserve to win the game," Jakub Voracek said. "They were better than us.

"We always leave 100 percent on the ice, (but) we just didn't play good."

That's rarely been the case over the Flyers' last 14 visits to Buffalo, going 10-2-2 and winning three in a row - all decided by one goal.

Michael Raffl has scored the decisive tally in each of the last two matchups at First Niagara Center, including a third-period tally in a 2-1 victory Feb. 15.

Brayden Schenn leads Philadelphia with four goals, scoring two against the Sabres on Tuesday before setting up his brother Luke Schenn's first tally of the season Thursday.

Brayden Schenn, however, has scored just once in five games in Buffalo, while Voracek has one in nine visits.

That doesn't bode well for the right wing, who has yet to find the net through nine games. Voracek has scored at least 22 goals in three straight seasons while his career-high 81 points last season led the team.

The slowest start of his career came in 2010-11 when he went 11 games without a goal.

The Sabres followed their win at Philadelphia with a 4-3 loss at Pittsburgh on Thursday, despite unloading 24 shots in the third period and outshooting the Penguins 53-29 overall. It was coach Dan Bylsma's first meeting with the Penguins since he was fired in 2014.

"We had a number of good looks," Bylsma said. "I think we gave them some easy opportunities with our puck management in the first."

Bylsma sees some promise in Buffalo generating 93 shots over the last two games.

"It's where we've played," he said. "There are certainly a handful of stretches in tonight's game and the Philly game where we were playing in our own end, but for large portions you're playing in the offensive end. You're having offensive zone time. We have the mentality of getting pucks and bodies there. That's what we've done well."

Ryan O'Reilly has at least one point in four straight games, totaling two goals and five assists. The left wing had two assists Thursday after setting up Tyler Ennis' tally against the Flyers.

He has six points in eight career meetings with Philadelphia.

Ennis has three goals and two assists in the past six games, but he sat out Thursday due to a lower-body injury. He's considered day to day.

Jack Eichel may be looking forward to a return home, where the rookie has scored all three of his goals in six games. The second overall pick failed to get his first on the road Thursday, despite tying five others for the franchise rookie record with eight shots on goal.

Preview: Senators (2-3) at Red Wings (4-4)

Date: October 30, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

A return to Joe Louis Arena was supposed to solve some issues for the Detroit Red Wings. Instead, they carry on with more questions.

The Red Wings take on the visiting Ottawa Senators on Friday night in the first of a home-and-home set between a pair of Atlantic Division teams seeking answers.

Detroit (4-4-1) opened with three wins but is stuck in a sloppy 1-4-1 slide. The Red Wings picked up their first win in nearly two weeks with a 3-2 victory at Vancouver on Saturday to close a 1-2-1 road trip, but they followed with a middling 3-1 loss to Carolina on Tuesday on home ice.

They fell to 2-2-0 in Detroit, where they play 18 of their next 25 games.

Detroit was happy with its defense against the Hurricanes, allowing just 21 shots, but the offense couldn't manage much despite its 26 chances on net. It was the Red Wings' third one-goal game in their last five, a span in which they have eight total goals.

Overall, it was a performance somewhere in the middle that led to another bad result.

"It's not bad. It's not great, either," Niklas Kronwall told the team's official website. "We know we have more in here, and we need more. We need more out of everybody. I've got to be better, and we've all got to be better as a team. There were too many turnovers."

The giveaway numbers might not be too telling with Detroit falling in the middle of the league with 7.78 per game - but when they've happened, they've hurt.

In Tuesday's loss, Carolina's first two goals came off turnovers: a misplay by backup goaltender Petr Mrazek and a pass from Kronwall that escaped Tomas Jurco.

"Sometimes it's mental, sometimes it's confidence," coach Jeff Blashill told the team's website. "We'll continue to work on it in practice."

Ottawa (4-3-2) hasn't had as much of a problem scoring, especially in a 5-4 shootout win over Calgary on Wednesday. The issues have been on defense with the Senators surrendering 15 goals in their last four games. They're also used to falling behind, allowing the first goal in seven straight games.

Though his team picked up its first home win against the Flames, coach Dave Cameron wasn't exactly enthusiastic.

"My biggest concern ... was our lack of energy," he said. "I know some of it was from bad execution, but we didn't have near the jump that we should have had based on how few of games we've played and the amount of practices we've had and that's my biggest surprise. I can't figure that out."

After starting the season with three wins in four games, Ottawa has stumbled to a 1-2-2 record over the last two weeks.

The Senators, who beat Detroit 2-1 in a shootout March 31 but have lost four of six meetings, face a struggling goaltender they have seen success against in the past. Jimmy Howard has let eight of the 76 shots he's faced reach the back of the net in his last two starts - both losses in regulation and overtime.

Howard is 5-3-0 against Ottawa in his career, but he holds a 3.15 goals-against average and .897 save percentage versus the Senators - one of only five teams against whom he has a sub-.900 mark.

Preview: Bruins (4-3) at Panthers (5-3)

Date: October 30, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

Though the Boston Bruins have generated plenty of offense during their current surge, the club's long-term success might depend on how well it plays defense.

Looking to build on their best defensive effort of the young season, the visiting Bruins can extend their point streak to six games Friday night against the Florida Panthers.

After totaling seven goals while opening with three consecutive losses, Boston (4-3-1) has 26 during a 4-0-1 stretch. However, it allowed an average of 4.14 goals prior to Tuesday's 6-0 rout of Arizona.

Tuukka Rask stopped 24 shots and the Bruins killed three penalties en route to a second straight win and first at home.

"Our thinking is defense first. We take a lot of pride in our battles," captain Zdeno Chara said. 'Play it simple and play to our strength. Our goals are up from previous years. We're still working on our goals-against improvements."

Though the Bruins missed the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons in 2014-15, they ranked eighth by allowing 2.45 goals per contest. They're hoping Tuesday's game is the start of a trend back toward that level of stinginess.

"Keeping the goals-against down is always the goal,' Rask, who prior to the win against the Coyotes had a 4.40 goals-against average, told the Bruins' official website.

"So that's a good building block for us, and we're trying to keep doing this."

David Krejci, meanwhile, has seven goals and seven assists while recording a point in all eight contests. It's Boston's longest streak to start a season since Joe Juneau and Dmitri Kvartalnov each went 14 straight in 1992-93.

"It is what it is," Krejci said. "When you win, it's good ... Make sure that we keep this atmosphere for as long as we can."

Krejci managed one assist in two games last season against Florida (5-3-1), which took both home meetings with Boston. Rask had a 1.53 GAA in his first five starts at Florida before taking the brunt in a 4-2 loss April 9.

Boston's Jimmy Hayes, who recorded three of his eight points Tuesday, set career highs with 19 goals and 16 assists for Florida last season. He returns Friday after being acquired in a July deal that sent Reilly Smith to the Panthers.

Third on the team with seven points, Smith has two goals with an assist while Florida has won two straight following an 0-2-1 stretch. He had one of the Panthers' three power-play goals in Tuesday's 4-1 victory over Colorado.

'It's fun when you have a night like that and get three goals and move the puck like that,' said coach Gerard Gallant, whose team came in 3 for its last 23 with the man advantage.

Florida also killed all five penalties after its opponents went 7 for 23 (30.4 percent) with the extra skater in the previous five contests.

"(Special teams) are huge, it's a big part of the game now," said forward Vincent Trocheck, who has three goals and two assists in the last three games. "It gets the momentum going."

Florida's Aleksander Barkov will not need surgery to repair a broken right hand suffered at Chicago last Thursday, but will miss two to four weeks. He has three goals and three assists in seven games.

Preview: Blackhawks (6-4) at Wild (6-2)

Date: October 30, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Wild have waited nearly six months for another chance at the Chicago Blackhawks. They may be catching the defending Stanley Cup champions at the perfect time.

Mired in a scoring slump and minus their top defenseman, the Blackhawks head to Saint Paul for the teams' first meeting since last May's Western Conference semifinals.

Chicago (6-4-0) was able to win its first three games with Duncan Keith sidelined by a recent knee procedure, but it's scored just three goals over its last three. Corey Crawford was in net for consecutive 1-0 home overtime victories over Tampa Bay and Anaheim, and the Blackhawks produced only Patrick Kane's power-play goal on 46 shots while having a four-game win streak end with Thursday's 3-1 loss in Winnipeg.

The Blackhawks have gone 235:58 since Artem Anisimov recorded their last 5-on-5 goal 4:02 into a 3-2 victory over Florida on Oct. 22.

'At this point in time we can do things a little bit different to make it tougher on their goalie,' Kane said. 'Try to get to the net, stay at the net, get shots through, get rebounds and try to bang in goals that way. Get some dirty goals because it seems all the pretty plays are not really happening for us.'

Kane, whose five goals fueled the Blackhawks' four-game playoff sweep of Minnesota, has done his part by scoring three of his six goals and adding four assists over a five-game point streak. Jonathan Toews netted the game-winner in the recent overtime wins, his lone two goals this season.

Chicago, losers of three straight on the road, now brings its sputtering offense into XCel Energy Center, where Minnesota (6-2-1) has scored 13 goals in going 4-0-0 thus far. The Wild maintained their perfect home mark with Tuesday's 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Edmonton, surging ahead when Charlie Coyle scored 43 seconds after Ryan Suter recorded his second goal of the night midway through the third period.

Minnesota has played the Blackhawks tough in each of the past two regular seasons, having gone 5-4-1 over that span. The playoffs have been another matter, with Chicago winning eight of 10 matchups in eliminating the Wild in the conference semis in back-to-back years.

"It's always going to be a difficult game against them," Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk said. "It's exciting - obviously there's a rivalry there - but we just try to win games, and it's always going to be a tough one against Chicago."

Dubnyk sports a 1.66 goals-against average while winning three of his last four appearances but struggled in last year's playoff series between the teams, permitting three or more goals in three of the Wild's four losses.

Crawford owns a 1.21 GAA while starting Chicago's last five contests, but Scott Darling is expected to make his first start since allowing four goals on 24 shots in a loss at Washington on Oct. 15.

Darling, who has never faced Minnesota, had 28 saves in Chicago's 4-1 win over the New York Islanders in his Oct. 10 season debut.
