KEY STAT: Deportivo have not won any of their nine away matches this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Espanyol are La Liga’s draw specialists – taking a single point from seven of their 16 games – and may share the spoils against lowly Depor. Quique Sanchez Flores has the Blue Budgies well organised but his team have failed to score in four of their eight home league games this season. Deportivo have won two of their last three league matches and are climbing away from danger.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Man City have kept two clean sheets in their last 15 away fixtures

EXPERT VERDICT: There has been lots of moaning from Premier League managers about busy schedules and the January workload could be about to increase for West Ham and Man City with a stalemate on the cards at the London Stadium. The Hammers, urged on by their home crowd, can do enough to take a sloppy City side to a replay.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Real Madrid have kept just four clean sheets this term

EXPERT VERDICT: Leaders Real Madrid return to La Liga action without Gareth Bale, Sergio Ramos and Pepe but they should still have too many gears for struggling Granada. The absence of those assets has left Zinedine Zindane's defence considerably weakened and the visitors - who have notched in all bar one of their away games this term - are fancied to grab a consolation.

RECOMMENDATION: Real Madrid to win 3-1

KEY STAT: Both teams have scored in seven of Man United’s last nine FA Cup ties

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester United’s Premier League form has picked up under Jose Mourinho and it will be interesting to see what sort of side the Red Devils boss selects for this game, especially with the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final against Hull just three days later. Reading have enjoyed the FA Cup in recent seasons and they could frustrate United for a while until the gulf in class tells.

KEY STAT: Only three of Arsenal’s last 18 FA Cup ties have taken place outside London

EXPERT VERDICT: Arsenal’s bid for a hat-trick of FA Cup titles was ended by Watford last season but the Gunners are expected to ease past Championship side Preston in the third round this term. Arsene Wenger’s defence has wobbled lately, however, and a high percentage of Preston’s recent games have featured goals at both ends.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Las Palmas are unbeaten at home in La Liga

EXPERT VERDICT: Las Palmas head into the new year with a fine home record and Quique Setien's team should start 2017 with another victory at their Gran Canaria base. Sporting Gijon have notched 12 points this season but only two of those have come on the road and they won't be relishing this tough away trip.

NHL roundup: Caps end Jackets' run at 16
By The Sports Xchange

WASHINGTON -- Braden Holtby stopped 29 shots for his fourth shutout of the season and the Washington Capitals got goals from five different players as they defeated Columbus 5-0 on Thursday to snap the Blue Jackets 16-game winning streak.
Columbus failed in its attempt to match the NHL record of 17 straight victories, established in 1993 by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Blue Jackets hadn't lost since Nov. 26, when they were defeated in a shootout by the Florida Panthers.
Washington took a 1-0 lead just over five minutes in and never looked back, getting a goal and an assist apiece from John Carlson and Nate Schmidt. Daniel Winnik, Andre Burakovsky and Justin Williams also scored, and Evgeny Kuznetsov had two assists.

Oilers 4, Bruins 3
BOSTON -- Patrick Maroon produced his first NHL hat trick and Edmonton spoiled Boston's tribute to Milt Schmidt, who died Wednesday.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also scored for the Oilers.
David Krejci, Patrice Bergeron and Colin Miller scored for the Bruins.

Predators 6, Lightning 1
TAMPA, Fla. -- Colton Sissons registered his first career hat trick to lead Nashville over Tampa Bay at Amalie Arena.
Pekka Rinne stopped 27 shots for Nashville. The Predators scored six goals on 18 shots as Ryan Ellis, Mike Fisher and Filip Forsberg also scored.
Tyler Johnson scored on the power play and Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with just 13 saves for the Lightning.

Hurricanes 4, Blues 2
ST. LOUIS -- Jeff Skinner scored a power-play goal with 6:08 left in the third period to break a tie and lead Carolina over St. Louis.
Derek Ryan scored twice and Jay McClement once for the Hurricanes.
Joel Edmundson and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Blues.

Blackhawks 4, Sabres 3
CHICAGO -- Patrick Kane scored 56 seconds into overtime to lift Chicago over Buffalo.
Kane finished with a goal and two assists as the Blackhawks rallied with two goals in the final three minutes of regulation and overtime. Artem Anisimov scored twice and Ryan Hartman contributed another goal as Chicago snapped a two-game losing streak.
Jack Eichel, Marcus Foligno and Kyle Okposo scored for the Sabres.

Red Wings 4, Kings 0
LOS ANGELES -- Thomas Vanek scored twice and Detroit buried Los Angeles with a three-goal first period at Staples Center.
Andreas Athanasiou had a goal and two assists as the Red Wings bounced back after being blanked by the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday. Jared Coreau stopped all 34 shots he faced for the Red Wings, who won for the second time in three games. Anthony Mantha also scored.
Jeff Zatkoff saved 18 shots for the Kings, who lost four of their last six.

Wild 5, Sharks 4
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Minnesota struck for three unanswered goals during a 5:12 span of the final period to erase a deficit and hand San Jose its third straight loss.
Mikko Koivu and Eric Staal scored two goals each, and Zach Parise added one for the Wild.
Joel Ward, Patrick Marleau, Joonas Donskoi and Joe Pavelski scored for the Sharks.

In the Crease - Week 13
By Joe Williams

Streaky Teams
Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak
Colorado 1-9 past 10 overall, 0-9-1 past 10 home Carolina Under 4-0-2 past six overall
Columbus 15-0 past 15 overall, 7-0 past seven home Los Angeles Under 7-0-1 past eight overall
Minnesota 12-1 past 13 overall, 6-0 past six road N.Y. Islanders Over 6-0 past six overall, 11-2 past 13
San Jose 8-2 past 10 overall N.Y. Rangers Over 5-0 past five overall
Toronto 5-0 past five overall Toronto Under 12-2 past 14 overall

Raking It In On Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been a friend to bettors at the window lately. The Leafs have rattled off five consecutive games, including two straight in overtime and another in a shootout, and they have won four straight as an underdog (+464 during the span). In addition, total bettors have been pleased with their constant 'under' results, hitting in 12 of the past 14 games overall. The 'under' is 6-1 in Toronto's past seven games on the road, which is where they are heading Tuesday in Washington and Friday in New Jersey. In fact, four of Toronto's next five games are away from the center of the hockey universe.

Coyote Ugly
The Arizona Coyotes have dropped seven consecutive games heading into the new year, and they have been outscored 28-13 during the unimpressive span. The Coyotes are in such a tailspin that they haven't been favored since Nov. 23, a span of 19 straight games. In fact, the Coyotes have been favored just three times all season, and they haven't won in such position since their opening game overtime victory against Philadelphia back on Oct. 15 when they were a -110 favorite, highest of the season.

Looking Ahead

Friday, Jan. 6
The Maple Leafs look to stay hot against the ice-cold Devils in Newark Friday night. New Jersey was glad to see the calendar turn to 2017, ringing in the new year with a 3-0 shutout of the visiting Boston Bruins Monday night. It was a rare home win, as the Devils are just 2-4 over their past six at home. These teams met in Newark back on Nov. 23, and New Jersey came away with a 5-4 victory in a shootout. New Jersey hasn't lost in regulation in 10 straight meetings with Toronto (6-0-4), and the Devils have won five straight meetings on home ice.

The Flames meet the Canucks in Vancouver for the third meeting of the season. The Canucks won the first meeting back on Oct. 15, snuffing out the Flames 2-1 in a shootout. Calgary avenged the loss on home ice with a 4-1 win Dec. 23. The Flames have won three of their past four games overall, and they're 6-2-1 in their past nine games on the road. Vancouver has won four in a row heading into the new week, and they have lost in regulation just once in their past eight on home ice (6-1-1).

Preview: Predators (17-14) at Panthers (16-15)

Date: January 06, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

SUNRISE, Fla. -- The "December Doldrums" affected Roberto Luongo of the Florida Panthers and Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators.

Both goalies were excellent in November as Rinne, 34, had a 1.49 goals-against average and a .949 save percentage and Luongo, 37, was 1.96, .939.

But then came December, and Rinne was brutal (3.44, .875). Luongo wasn't much better in December (2.88, .906), and his January got off to a poor start when he allowed four goals in a 4-1 loss to the visiting Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday.

The Jets were the less-rested team in that game, having played Tuesday in Tampa Bay, but still got through to Luongo.

"We needed the rest," Panthers interim coach Tom Rowe said of his team, who had been off since Saturday. "But we didn't take advantage."

The Panthers (16-15-8) get another chance to take advantage of a less-rested team Friday when they host the Predators, who routed the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-1 on Thursday with only 19 shots on goal.

Rinne got the win Thursday, making 27 saves as he looks to turn things around in January.

Luongo is extra motivated to win Friday because he has been stuck on 447 career wins for three straight games. If he gets one more win, he will pass Terry Sawchuk for fifth place on the NHL's career victories list.

There's a chance the Panthers will turn to backup James Reimer on Friday. Reimer has had completely opposite trends from Luongo, suffering through a poor November (3.32, .890) before getting himself on track in December (1.90, .941).

It's isn't all about the goalies, of course. Panthers skaters have made crucial mistakes such as the turnover in his own end by rookie defenseman Mike Matheson on Wednesday that gift-wrapped the eventual winning goal for Winnipeg.

The Panthers' injuries have been well-documented. Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov -- two-thirds of the team's top line along with Jaromir Jagr -- are out. Huberdeau hasn't played all season and is still out for at least another month. Barkov, who will likely be an All-Star this year, is out with a lower-body injury.

In addition, left winger Seth Griffith, who took Huberdeau's place on Florida's top line, suffered a concussion Wednesday and is out indefinitely. Forward Jared McCann was called up from Springfield of the AHL on Thursday to take Griffith's place.

The Panthers won two of their last eight home games (2-2-4).

Most online power rankings have the Panthers listed at about No. 23 in the league, and that's about right given Florida's minus-15 goal differential. Only seven teams are worse than Florida in that category. No team in playoff position is anywhere near that minus-15 figure.

That's why consistent play from Luongo (11-10-5) is so important to Florida's long-shot chances of qualifying for the playoffs for the second straight season.

The Predators (17-14-7), assuming Luongo starts on Friday, won't be an easy opponent with four straight road victories in tow.

"It was until after the All-Star Game last year that we actually hit our stride," Predators general manager David Poile told The Tennessean earlier this week. "That's when we played our best hockey."

Nashville left winger and leading scorer James Neal (upper-body injury) sat out Thursday's game, but reportedly could return Friday.

Predators defenseman Anthony Bitetto returned Thursday after missing 15 games because of an upper-body injury.

Preview: Maple Leafs (0-0) at Devils (0-0)

Date: January 06, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

Offense has not been an issue this season for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who boast three outstanding rookies that have helped the team average a little more than three goals per game.

The problem, however, has been preventing goals -- while they average the fourth-most goals per game (3.03), they're giving up 2.81 per contest, which leaves them in the bottom half of the league. Tightening defensively will once again be a priority when the Leafs visit the New Jersey Devils on Friday night.

"That's kind of been the case most of the season," said Leafs rookie Auston Matthews after his team blew a two-goal lead and lost to the Washington Capitals 6-5 in overtime on Tuesday. "We kind of get up and let our foot off the gas a little bit. It's kind of the same old story. We've got to clean it up. It's very unacceptable to go down that road."

The Leafs have lost nine games (five in regulation) when scoring first, which is tied for the third-most in the league. They also have the third-worst winning percentage when leading after two periods, a sign that despite having Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander enjoying great first seasons, there is still work to be done in Toronto.

"We weren't very good defensively; we didn't skate like we can and didn't play like we could," Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. "Getting a point on the road when you're not very good doesn't happen very often. I thought we were playing the same way the whole game -- not good enough, not competitive enough, didn't execute."

Even with that hiccup, the Leafs are trending in the right direction -- the loss to the Capitals snapped a five-game winning streak but they are 6-1-3 in their past 10 games. They will be tested by a Devils team that has won three of four and have won their past two games by a combined 6-1.

Goaltender Cory Schneider has struggled this season but he has stopped 51 of his past 52 shots. The Devils have been more committed to defense and will need to be strong in their own end if they are to combat the quick and talented Leafs.

"We're a very hard team to play against when we play a committed game and we were able to do that the last few nights and it's so important," Devils defenseman Ben Lovejoy said to the Bergen Record. "The last two nights, we've made some serious steps towards more consistency. (Schneider) is our superstar. He is our best player and we rely on him to be the best player. We expect him to do it every game going forward."

It may be difficult if the Devils are without Andy Greene, who suffered an injured hand against the Hurricanes on Wednesday night and considered "50-50" to play by coach John Hynes. Greene has played in 350 consecutive games and is the unquestioned No. 1 defenseman on the team. If he's out, the Devils may need to score four or five goals to win.

"He's a big, big part of the team and his consecutive games streak speaks for itself," defenseman Jon Merrill said to the Bergen Record. "If he is unable to go a lot of us have to step up because he plays a lot of minutes, on the penalty kill, power play, five-on-five."

"He's a huge loss if he's out," defenseman Kyle Quincey said to the Bergen Record. "All of us have to step up and fill the void."

Preview: Hurricanes (17-14) at Blackhawks (24-12)

Date: January 06, 2017 8:30 PM EDT

CHICAGO -- Patrick Kane hopes he and his teammates can build upon a comeback win when the Chicago Blackhawks host the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night.

One night earlier, Kane buried a game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Blackhawks to a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Chicago snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 24-12-5 after 41 games.

"That could be a huge win for us here, especially (when) you look at the halfway point of the season," Kane said. "You lose that one, maybe you start losing a little confidence."

Instead, the Blackhawks will carry a renewed sense of confidence into Friday's contest against Carolina (17-14-7). The game marks the second and final meeting of the regular season between the teams.

Like the Blackhawks, the Hurricanes are coming off a feel-good win Thursday night. Jeff Skinner scored the go-ahead goal as Carolina pulled away for a 4-2 win on the road against the St. Louis Blues.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Carolina, which has two wins in its past five games.

"Coming out of the Christmas break, we really haven't gotten to the level we were at before," Skinner said. "Now, we're back on the right track. Maybe this will kick-start something."

The Hurricanes have proved they are not intimidated by the Blackhawks. In the first meeting between the teams Dec. 30, Carolina held on for a 3-2 win at home thanks to goals from Elias Lindholm, Lee Stempniak and Jay McClement. Chicago received goals from Michal Kempny and Vinnie Hinostroza.

Goaltender Scott Darling made 25 saves in the Dec. 30 loss against the Hurricanes, and he is expected to start Friday in the second game of a back-to-back set. Darling is 10-4-2 with a 2.39 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage in his third season with the Blackhawks.

For Carolina, veteran Cam Ward could start his second game in as many nights. He made 21 saves against the Blues to improve to 14-11-1.

If Ward rests, Michael Leighton could earn his third start for the Hurricanes. Leighton, 35, is 2-1-0 with a 3.53 goals-against average and an .875 save percentage but performed well recently in the AHL.

Regardless of who starts in net for Carolina, the Blackhawks will provide a difficult test. Four players have scored double-digit goals including Artem Anisimov (18), Marian Hossa (16), Artemi Panarin (15) and Kane (12).

Anisimov scored twice Thursday and is tied for seventh in the NHL in goals scored. The 28-year-old is only four goals shy of matching his career high of 22, set during the 2013-14 season with Columbus.

"He's just a great hockey player," Kane said. "He does everything right, plays both ends of the ice. I think people probably don't see it a lot, but he's so skilled."

Carolina is led by Skinner (14 goals) and center Victor Rask (10 goals). Meanwhile, center Derek Ryan will try to stay hot after tallying his fifth and sixth goals of the season Thursday at St. Louis.

"It's huge to start off with a nice win and get some confidence to get the boys rolling," Ryan said. "Hopefully, that just continues into the next game in Chicago."

Preview: Islanders (15-15) at Avalanche (12-25)

Date: January 06, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

Snow and cold temperatures hit Colorado on Wednesday, which simply mirrors the mood around the Avalanche locker room.

The ice-cold Avalanche (12-25-1) haven't had much success this season and things aren't looking up for the once-proud franchise. Colorado has lost five in a row and 10 of their last 11 games. They're on a 10-game winless streak at home, a place they haven't prevailed since Nov. 14.

They hope to change that when they play the New York Islanders on Friday night, but it will take a big change in the players' mindset.

"It's no doubt that we're pressing and battling right now," Jarome Iginla told the Denver Post after the 4-1 loss at Calgary on Wednesday night. "We have a lot of creative guys and now we're getting to where it kind of feels like we played trying not to make a mistake. That's what happens when you're not going. It's the wrong mindset. We're working on it.

"We're a young team overall and it's a learning experience for the young guys. We're double-clutching and the confidence is a little bit down."

The Islanders (15-15-6) are also struggling to meet expectations this season. New York is last in the Metropolitan Division, which currently has the top three teams - in terms of points - in the NHL.

Islanders haven't played since beating the Jets 6-2 in Winnipeg on Saturday and should be fresh for Friday's game. They hope it's the start of a push to climb in the standings.

"Early on, we got behind the eight ball a bit," defenseman Travis Hamonic told Newsday. "Some third periods, we maybe win half of those, we're in the wild-card spot possibly. If you can win a couple in a row, you're possibly back in the conversation."

The Islanders have held third-period leads in 32 of their 36 games this season but haven't been able to close out games.

"I think if you ask everybody in this room, everyone's disappointed individually as well," center John Tavares told Newsday. "For myself, I can certainly say I haven't been at a consistent level, the standards I have for myself and I've always tried to improve on those. It's been really up and down for our team and it starts to reflect on guys individually."

Colorado's only win since Dec. 11 was at Chicago on Dec. 23. Since then they've allowed 18 goals in three home games and have struggled to score.

Wednesday they got a meaningless goal with 1:25 left to avoid a shutout. They were once again plagued by lack of discipline and took too many penalties.

"We made stupid mistakes again," Joe Colborne told the Denver Post. "We keep talking about it and we don't execute. We shoot ourselves in the foot by taking penalties. It's frustrating."

The Avalanche haven't blown up the roster but they did tinker with it. On Thursday they claimed forward Matt Nieto off waivers from San Jose. With 23 players already on the roster, Colorado will have to make a move if it wants to keep Nieto in Denver.

With Semyon Varlamov battling a groin injury there are three goaltenders on the roster, so if he can suit up Friday it would mean Jeremy Smith would probably be sent to the AHL.

Nieto may help but he can't save the franchise. The turnaround has to come from the core players, who haven't played well enough to prevent a total collapse over the last seven weeks.

"We have to come together as a team," captain Gabriel Landeskog told HockeyBuzz.com. "I've said it all along, we lose as a team and we win as a team. If you start getting away from that, you're in deep trouble. So we have to make sure that we stay together and talk about it and dig our way out of it."

Preview: Flames (21-17) at Canucks (19-18)

Date: January 06, 2017 10:00 PM EDT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Both teams are not exactly titans.

But the Vancouver Canucks (19-8-3) and Calgary Flames (21-17-2) are two of the hottest teams in the NHL as they prepare to face each other here Friday night in the first of back-to-back, home-and-away games against each other.

The Canucks have won a season-high five straight games and four of those are by one goal. The Flames have only lost once in their past six outings.

"To come out of the (Christmas) break with five straight wins, it definitely helps our confidence," said Vancouver center Bo Horvat, who has stood out offensively and defensively during the victory run. "The whole team is playing better defensively and we're taking a lot more pride in it. We're doing the little things in our zone to help translate to the offence and it is helping us."

The Canucks last won six straight games during a seven-game win streak in December 2013, when former coach John Tortorella was at the high point of his only season with Vancouver. This five-game streak comes after the Canucks endured a nine-game losing streak earlier this season, and has confounded many critics, who expected the team to struggle after Christmas.

"I think it's huge for us," Horvat said. "It's a great confidence boost. Everyone is playing well, and giving that extra to try and win. And, I think that's been a huge difference for us these past five games."

The Canucks have posted their wins over talented Los Angeles, Anaheim and Edmonton clubs while also exposing the weaknesses of lowly Arizona and Colorado. Some might argue that the Canucks' schedule has made them look better than they are.

However, four of Calgary?s six recent wins have come against Colorado and Arizona, who both faced the Flames twice during that span. One of the Calgary's other wins came in a 4-1 drubbing of the Canucks, who only managed 14 shots, on Dec. 23.

The Canucks have played much better since then and want to keep things rolling.

"Early on, our habits were just a little bit off and when the habits are good you see these kind of results," said Vancouver goaltender Ryan Miller, who picked up his first shutout in more than a year during Wednesday's 3-0 victory over the Coyotes. "We've) just got to keep this going, keep building some confidence."

The Flames, who thrashed Colorado 4-1 on Wednesday, are looking to do likewise.

"We talk all the time, and everything we do is, about the mental side of the game, and the mental push and where you should be mentally because it's hard here in this portion of games, 40 through 65, before you see the daylight," Flames coach Glen Gulutzan told reporters in Calgary this week. "This is where, mentally, you have to be sharp and push yourself."

These days, Calgary's power play is providing plenty of push. The Flames scored three goals on man-advantage opportunities during Wednesday's meeting with Colorado. After ranking last in the NHL earlier in the season, Calgary's power play is making a case to stay in the top 10.

"You have to win the special-teams game in this league, and we're starting to do that and you can see the results," Gulutzan said.

The Flames are also getting good results from players other than usual offensive catalysts Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan and Sam Bennett, who have also been effectively lately. Mikael Backlund is on a five-game scoring streak, producing six goals in that span.

Backlund's streak is the longest by a Flame since Curtis Glencross scored in seven consecutive outings from Feb. 27 to Mar. 11, 2012.

"(Backlund is) confident and everything that he's putting towards the net is going in," Gulutzan said. "He's getting rewarded for the work he's done prior."

Meanwhile, Backlund's 19-year-old linemate Matthew Tkachuk is on a seven-game points run. Tkachuk's streak is tied for the longest of the season by a rookie, matching Toronto center Auston Matthews' current success rate.

"That line (of Backlund, Tkachuk and Michael Frolik), they've played 200-foot hockey the right way from training camp until now," Gulutzan said.

Preview: Coyotes (11-22) at Ducks (20-12)

Date: January 06, 2017 10:00 PM EDT

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- John Gibson isn't among the NHL stat leaders in key areas such as save percentage and goals-against average. In fact, the Anaheim Ducks goaltender isn't even ranked among the top 20 in those categories.

But the 23-year-old from Pittsburgh might be playing as well as any goalie in the league right now, and it's a safe bet he'll be back in net for a seventh straight game when the Ducks host the Arizona Coyotes on Friday night.

He's coming off a 2-0 shutout against the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night, a performance that actually took a back seat to the clinic he delivered Sunday, when he tied a franchise record by stopping 51 shots in a 4-3 shootout victory against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The turning point came when Gibson was lifted after allowing his third goal early in the second period against the Flyers. Ducks coach Randy Carlyle noticed Gibson shaking his head in displeasure as he skated off the ice, replaced by backup Jonathan Bernier.

Carlyle wouldn't say, but at that moment he may have decided that he made a big mistake, telling Gibson as he passed him by that he'd be re-entering the game at the next break in action. Sure enough, Gibson returned to the game four minutes later and stopped all 31 shots he faced from then on, as well as four of five in the shootout.

"It's the situation you want to be in," Gibson said after the win against Detroit. "You want to be the guy that leads the team and helps them win, helps them get through when times are tough. That's what you got to do."

The Flyers and Red Wings are each struggling in different ways, but if Gibson is in goal Friday night, he'll face an Arizona team that has one of the worst records in the NHL.

Heading into Thursday night, the Coyotes had the fewest wins in the league (11) and the second fewest points (27) behind the Colorado Avalanche (25). They've lost eight straight games, all in regulation, and haven't won in regulation since beating Detroit 4-1 on Dec. 13.

Arizona goalie Mike Smith said it will take a number of improvements for the Coyotes to pull out of their slump.

"It's going to take hard work, it's going to take doing the little things right on a consistent basis, it's going to take discipline, it's going to take looking at yourself in the mirror and figuring a way to get out of this," Smith said after a 3-0 loss Wednesday at the Vancouver Canucks, the third time Arizona's been shut out in the last month.

Arizona could catch a break against the Ducks, however. Ryan Getzlaf, second on the team with 30 points, didn't practice Thursday after missing Wednesday's game with a lower body injury. Getzlaf was initially injured early in the third period against the Flyers.

Grand Salami - January

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

NBA roundup: Westbrook scores 49 but Thunder edged by Rockets
By The Sports Xchange

HOUSTON Russell Westbrook scored 49 points but Nene sank two free throws with 0.7 seconds left and Houston squeaked out a 118-116 victory over Oklahoma City Thursday.
Westbrook shot 16 of 34 and made a career-high eight 3-pointers as Oklahoma City nearly overcame an 18-point deficit after blowing an early 14-point lead.
Victor Oladipo nailed a corner 3 for a 116-114 lead with 1:55 remaining. The Thunder bludgeoned the Rockets on the boards in the fourth period, chipping away behind Enes Kanter (15 points, 13 rebounds) and, of course, Westbrook.
James Harden nearly had a triple-double for the Rockets with 26 points, eight rebounds and 12 assists. All five Rockets starters scored in double figures with Nene adding a season-high 18 points. Eric Gordon scored 22 off the bench.

Raptors 101, Jazz 93
TORONTO -- Kyle Lowry scored 33 points and Toronto knocked off Utah.

Suns 102, Mavericks 95
DALLAS -- Eric Bledsoe and Devin Booker combined for 48 points to lead the Phoenix past Dallas.
Bledsoe scored 26 points, with 12 coming in the last 6 1/2 minutes. Booker carried the load in the third quarter with 11 points and finished with 22 on 9-of-17 shooting.

3-pointer: Potential Finals spoilers
By Tony Mejia

We’re into 2017 now, and it’s fair to say this NBA season has gone as expected.

Although there were some initial growing pains, the Warriors superteam is great and remains the betting favorite despite the Christmas Day loss to the Cavs. Golden State is -250 to win the West and -125 to recapture the NBA title. Meanwhile, the defending champs are the class of the East, appearing to be even more formidable since Kevin Love looks more comfortable in his skin and embracing his role. Cleveland is -500 to win its conference and +180 to repeat in the Finals. The Spurs (+400, +1000), even having lost Tim Duncan, have had the type of success we’ve come to expect from them, even if it’s taken Gregg Popovich kicking them around after wins to keep them on their toes.

If there’s been a real surprise, it’s been how bad the Timberwolves have been given Tom Thibodeau’s presence and all that young talent. If you’re looking to accentuate the positive, the fact James Harden has taken so well to Mike D’Antoni’s coaching while embracing the role of distributor falls into that category. He’s made his teammates better. Sometimes, he shockingly even plays defense.

Still, it’s not good enough. We dig drama. We love to be surprised.

The remainder of the week could provide some clues as to who is actually mentally tough enough to emerge and prevent a third consecutive Cleveland-Golden State NBA Finals. I won’t even include San Antonio since the Spurs have been ubiquitous in going deep in the playoffs for two decades. You won’t find the Clippers here either, since they’re a shell of themselves until Chris Paul and Blake Griffin get healthy.

Sadly, there’s no Eastern Conference team worth putting on this list, which is why you’ll read about no potential variable there. Barring injury, Cleveland will be back in the NBA Finals. Load up on your Cavs to win the East futures without apprehension unless Toronto finds a way to extract Paul Millsap from Atlanta or the Celtics make another Al Horford-like acquisition.

The top threat

The Utah Jazz have been riddled with injuries over the first few months and yet are still edging out Oklahoma City for the Northwest Division lead. In Rudy Gobert, they have one of the NBA’s premier rim protectors, which is why they’re potentially so dangerous in a series against the Warriors. Although the fact Golden State shoots it so well from the perimeter mitigates the advantage Gobert provides Utah, the Jazz do have the pieces, when healthy and completely whole, to really frustrate anyone in the league. They're a great potential cash cow since Sportsbook.ag has them +4000 to emerge out of the Western Conference and +8500 to win it all.

Wings Gordon Hayward, Derrick Hood and Joe Johnson are flammable and capable of raining down 3-pointers on anybody. Gobert and Derrick Favors, who has been in and out of the lineup all season, are physically dominant and can own the boards while providing fantastic post defense. Point guards George Hill and Shelvin Mack are among the top defenders at their position, so there’s no question they’ll be able to make Stephen Curry work for everything he gets over the course of a series.

A collective approach isn’t likely to beat the Warriors, but Hayward has demonstrated the ability to take over a game. He’s averaged a career-best 22.4 points and opened 2017 with his fourth game of 30 points or more in a 101-89 win over the Nets.

Utah appears to check all boxes, but what we want to see now is whether it has staying power, and that’s going to be tested this week. The Jazz opened a five-game road swing in Brooklyn to begin a seven-day, five-city oddysey. Although they opened with a win and cover after a slow start in Brooklyn, they fell in Boston on Tuesday 115-104, surrendering a season-high points allowed. They’re toiling short-handed with stops in Toronto, Minnesota and Memphis ahead. Each game will be incredibly challenging, especially when you factor in the travel involved.

Hill’s availability will be key since he’s in concussion protocol after catching an elbow from Phoenix center Alex Len over the weekend that opened a gash in his lip so wide it required 22 stitches to close. There’s no word as to when he’ll be available, so the Jazz may have to make it through the entire trip short-handed with rookie Dante Exum also out. Shelvin Mack is handling point guard duties and has his limitations, while backups Raul Neto and Joe Ingles wouldn’t ordinarily be out there in the role they’re having to play.

The Celtics snapped Utah’s four-game losing streak, but despite playing a third game in four nights without their preferred floor generals, there were bright spots. Favors distributed a career-high seven assists. Veterans Joe Johnson and Boris Diaw, brought in this offseason precisely to help provide leadership through periods like these, combined for 32 points off the bench.

It remains to be seen how long Hill is out or how well the rest of this road trip goes, but the Jazz need to continue making strides. Quin Snyder’s team has a chance to be the ultimate x-factor once fully healthy. For now, I wouldn’t pick on them simply because they’re short-handed, but an ‘over’ run may be coming without Hill around. The ‘under’ had come in 10 of 12 times before Boston got off against their tired legs.

MVP-Driven

Great players can own a series, so Harden-led Houston and Russell Westbrook’s OKC Thunder have to be taken seriously.

It’s always going to seem like Mike D’Antoni’s teams are winning via smoke and mirrors. Even his masterpieces, those Suns squads of a decade ago featuring the maestro Steve Nash, Amar’e Stoudemire, Johnson and Shawn Marion, were always greeted with a sense of skepticism. Do they play enough defense? Can they beat four games over the course of seven games by running and gunning?

Count on Charles Barkley dismissing the Rockets as a gimmicky jump-shooting team. The current odds have them +1800 to win the West and +4000 to claim a championship.

However dubious you are about their chances, there’s no debating that GM Daryl Morey has assembled some great shooters around Harden. Newcomers Ryan Anderson and Eric Gordon have lived up to their reputations and thrived. Gordon leads the NBA in 3-pointers made. Trevor Ariza often finds himself completely wide open.

D’Antoni’s other starting guard, Patrick Beverley, is not at all his typical type of player due to the fact he doesn’t shoot it well, but his pesky, relentless defense and intensity crashing the boards and pitching in wherever he can has endeared him to the veteran coach and makes him someone who can make Curry’s life a nightmare in a series.

Beverley has a wrist issue that sidelined him for Monday’s game against John Wall-led Washington, but he should be fine for games against Russell Westbrook’s Thunder, the Magic, Kyle Lowry’s Raptors and Kemba Walker’s Hornets over the next 10 days. Beverley takes the pressure off Harden, a suspect defender at best, so his return will be key even though the Rockets managed to beat Washington 101-91 without him for their 16th win in 18 games. Houston is 24-6 over the last 30, covering the spread 21 times.

Westbrook is the NBA’s other top MVP candidate and has averaged a triple-double while attempting to keep the Thunder (+4000, +8500) among the league’s elite. Whether he’ll wear down is a subject of great debate, but he’s regarded as the league’s top athlete and only has to deal with three back-to-backs this month, the first of which comes as they continue a three-game road trip that began with Monday’s 98-94 loss in Milwaukee.

Playing at Charlotte and then attempting to run with Houston in its building puts OKC in an underdog role both nights, so it will be important to try and gain a split in order to avoid a losing streak that would keep it winless in ’17 until the weekend.

Oklahoma City is playing 12 of 15 games away from home in January, so it could be a trying period if health issues creep in. Fortunately, the Thunder just got Victor Oladipo back from a wrist injury and have point guard Cameron Payne trying to get back in a rhythm in the D-League, so Westbrook will soon have multiple playmakers to take some of the burden off him available.

Billy Donovan is trying to piece together a bench with inexperienced players like Jerami Grant, Joffrey Lauvergne and Alex Abrines, so monitor how the second unit holds up on the road. If things go poorly, this could be a forgettable month. If they rise to the occasion, it could be the point where Oklahoma City truly turns the corner in its first season without Kevin Durant.

The Wild Card

The final threat to the Warriors appears to be Memphis, since point guard Mike Conley is among the game’s best defenders at his position and the same can be said about Marc Gasol at center. Having thrived despite Conley’s extended absence has put the Grizzlies (+4000, +8000) in position to compete for a top-four seed.

The fact they were able to lean on young players like Andrew Harrison and JaMychal Green while Conley, Zach Randolph and Vince Carter were out of the lineup provided their youth invaluable experience. Top offseason acquisition Chandler Parsons appears to be finally ready to play without restrictions and could raise the Grizzlies’ ceiling significantly.

While Utah has supplanted them in playing the league’s slowest pace, the Grizzlies still are edging them out in defensive efficiency, nosing out the Spurs and Warriors too. Being comfortable in grinders is essential to winning on the road and slowing down a team like Golden State, so it would be foolish not to take this group seriously.

First-year head coach David Fizdale is still learning how to push his team’s buttons, so it will be interesting to see how his rotation changes with a full team intact, especially with so many veterans competing with young athletes for minutes.

The Grizzlies spent New Year’s Even on the road after torching Sacramento and remained out West to face the both Staples residents in a Tuesday-Wednesday back-to-back before testing themselves against the Warriors in a matchup all eyes will be on come Friday.

The Lakers hit 16 3-pointers against Memphis through the first three quarters in a 116-102 upset win, so this week could get ugly if the defense doesn’t get its act together.

“I don’t know who we were performing for, but it wasn’t for each other,” Fizdale said afterward. “We show signs of greatness and then we are just zombies out there.”

With challenges against the Clippers and Warriors ahead, this will be a great opportunity to see if the resiliency demonstrated during a marvelous Conley-less two-week stretch from Nov. 30-Dec. 14 can be replicated now that they’re whole.

Preview: Timberwolves (11-24) at Wizards (16-18)

Date: January 06, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Wizards ended 2016 rolling but started 2017 running uphill, which is the direction the young Minnesota Timberwolves traveled most of the season as the teams meet Friday.

The Wizards (16-18) won nine of 12 games to reach. 500, but lost their chance for a winning record with a 101-91 loss at the Houston Rockets Monday night. Falling to one of the top NBA teams on the road is one thing. Losing 113-105 to a 10-win Dallas Mavericks team as they did the following night is something else.

"Well, I thought we got outworked, and I haven't said that a lot this year with our team," Wizards coach Scott Brooks said.

Dallas shot 17 of 32 from beyond the 3-point arc and outscored Washington 26-17 in the fourth quarter.

"They were moving the ball, and we were hoping that they would miss, and not doing a very good job of making them miss," Brooks said.

Guards John Wall, who was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for December, and Bradley Beal combined for 52 points. Washington returns home where its won eight in a row hoping the clumsy Texas two-step doesn't derail any overall growth.

"No not at all, definitely a learning experience," reserve forward Kelly Oubre Jr. said. "Gotta come back and play harder, smarter, and get back to what we were doing in 2016. It's just two games, we'll get back on track. We have a two game home stand, all the momentum will come back once we get home."

The Timberwolves (11-24) aim for a win away from home after falling 93-91 at the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night. The young squad's latest setback came in the closing moments as Robert Covington's jumper off an inbounds pass with 0.2 seconds remaining gave the 76ers the win.

"We wanted the ball to go away from the basket. That didn't happen," Minnesota coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We needed some help on the curl, and we didn't get it."

Minnesota dropped five of its last seven games.

Zach LaVine scored 28 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 23 against Philadelphia, but they didn't get much help from leading scorer Andrew Wiggins. The small forward had eight points -- 13 below his average -- on 2 of 15 shooting.

Both teams have electric perimeter players, but also threats inside. Wizards center Marcin Gortat (12.0) and Towns (11.6) rank among the top 10 in rebounding.

Minnesota's starters play more minutes than any team in the league followed by Washington.

Both teams won on the road in this series last season with Minnesota claiming a 132-129 victory in double-overtime on March 25 as Towns scored 27 points.

Preview: Rockets (28-9) at Magic (16-21)

Date: January 06, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

James Harden is the engine of the NBA's most exciting offense.

The Houston Rockets entered Thursday night's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder as the third-ranked offense in the league, scoring 112.3 points per 100 possessions. Switching to raw statistics and the numbers look even more eye-popping - their 114.6 points per game is second in the league.

And Harden is a big part of that. In many ways, he is all of that.

Harden entered Thursday averaging 28.4 points per game with 8.2 rebounds per game and a league-best 11.9 assists per game. He posts a 33.7 percent usage rate - essentially meaning one-third of every Rockets possession ends with Harden taking a shot or turning it over.

Russell Westbrook is not the only one who is racking up triple-doubles. Harden's 23-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist game against the Washington Wizards marked his third straight triple-double.

The streak was just broken in Houston's 116-114 win over Oklahoma City on Thursday night. Harden posted 26 points, eight rebounds and 12 assists, dishing out a free throw assist to Nene for the game-winning points.

That does not count to his assist total. But Harden is where the Rockets go first, second and third, trusting him to make the right play.

His statistical outbursts do not feel any different, it would seem, because coach Mike D'Antoni's offense seems to be the perfect fit for Harden's skills.

"I've never seen it done before," Harden told the Houston Chronicle. "It felt no different. Obviously, I made shots. Just getting guys involved, guys made shots. And I still thought we could have played better.

"We had a couple opportunities we missed open 3s, missed layups, a dunk I never really miss. Overall, it felt like a normal game, other than I made more shots."

Harden has nine triple-doubles this season, behind only Westbrook. He still has the ability to get to the line at will and score points in huge bunches. Now he has added the passing to go with that.

Triple-doubles are not easy to do. The league saw just 75 triple-doubles last year. The league has seen 42 this year nearing the midway point. Twenty-five of them are by Harden and Westbrook.

This is in the NBA. So seeing eye-popping numbers like this is both surprising and not surprising. These are the best players in the world, after all. With the way teams in the league play today with 3-point shooting and up-tempo offenses, it is not surprising in a way to see such gifted playmakers dominating box scores.

"The way the game is being played now with more shots, it gives guys a lot of opportunity to get rebounds and a lot of opportunity to get rebounds," Orlando Magic guard Elfrid Payton said. "I'm not blown away because of the style of play that is being played in the league right now. It's definitely tough, but there are a lot more opportunities out there with the game being played faster, with more shots and teams playing faster."

But triple-doubles are hard to come by. Elfrid Payton has three triple-doubles to his name, including back-to-back triple doubles in his rookie year in 2015. No player has averaged a triple-double in a season since Oscar Robertson in 1962. To see two players flirting with it is nothing short of historic.

That will be part of the challenge the Magic's struggling defense will take on when Harden and the Rockets come to town Fon riday night.

Preview: Cavaliers (26-8) at Nets (8-26)

Date: January 06, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- Kyle Korver was scheduled to visit Brooklyn next Tuesday with the Atlanta Hawks.

Plans changed and Korver might suit up Friday for the Cleveland Cavaliers when they open a six-game trip with a visit to the Nets.

The Cavaliers acquired Kyle Korver from Atlanta on Thursday night, but the team has yet to announce it because they have to finish a trade call with the league.

The call will occur Friday, and if it happens in time, Korver could be available by the opening tip.

Korver was traded on the two-year anniversary of Cleveland obtaining Timofey Mozgov and J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert. Coincidentally, Smith's thumb surgery that will sideline him until the end of March likely contributed to the deal.

Although the Cavaliers shoot 39 percent from 3-point range and are at 40.9 percent since Smith last played Dec. 20, they shot 25 percent (14 of 56) in their last two games.

Korver was courted by the Cavaliers in free agency after the 2012-13 season and ultimately signed a four-year, $24 million with Atlanta. He helped Atlanta to a 60-win season two years ago and shot 42.5 percent from long range in Cleveland's four-game sweep in last year's Eastern Conference semifinals.

"Obviously, it's a great opportunity for me to go to Cleveland," Korver said after not playing for Atlanta on Thursday night in New Orleans. "I'm very excited about that part, but there's definitely a lot of relationships that care a lot about here that I'm going to miss."

The version of the Cavs that Korver joins is about to embark on a trip that will span 6,500 miles and end with a trip to Golden State on Jan. 16. It also is a team that is less than 100 percent from a health perspective.

Kyrie Irving has missed the last three games with a right hamstring injury and coach Tyronn Lue did not give a timetable for his point guard's return.

Irving is listed as questionable and the Cavs will go with inexperience at point guard for the time being, at least until another trade occurs.

The inexperience at point guard became news when LeBron James pointed it out after Wednesday's 106-94 loss to the Chicago Bulls when the Cavs totaled 13 assists, making their total 46 in the last three games.

Besides Irving's status, Kevin Love is listed as questionable with an illness. Love did not play Wednesday after playing 24 minutes Monday and the Cavs are hopeful that Love can play Friday.

Love lost approximately 10 pounds from food poisoning contracted on the team flight after Saturday's win in Charlotte. He also missed two games with a left knee contusion last month.

Channing Frye started for Love and scored 15 points Wednesday, but he also has been impacted by the illness, which also impacted James.

"It's something that's going around," Lue said. Channing's really sick, Kevin's sick and now LeBron is sick. So hopefully it doesn't continue to spread."

James, however, was forceful in asserting he will play through it while expressing frustration at the injuries and illnesses.

"It can (wear on you)," James said "It's just tough. It's slowing up our process because of what we're trying to build."

James and the Cavs beat the Nets by 20 two weeks ago at home in a game they led by as much 46. The Cavs are 7-2 against the Nets since James returned to the team in 2014, but one of those losses is credited for spurring them to an eventual championship.

The Cavs were handed a nine-point loss in Brooklyn on March 24 when James scored 30 points but went scoreless in the fourth quarter. It led to a team meeting where Lue implored more aggressiveness out of the Cavs.

Brooklyn's last home win over Cleveland was its penultimate of a 21-win season. The Nets ended last year with 10 straight losses and is on pace for a similar record this season.

Since a 4-5 start after a win at Phoenix, the Nets are 4-21. Brooklyn has allowed more than 100 points in each loss and more than 120 in eight losses, and sustained 14 double-digit losses.

The latest was Thursday's 121-109 loss at Indiana where the Nets struggled for production from their starting lineup. Trevor Booker scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, but the other four starters combined for 32 points on 13 of 36 from the field.

"The starters took us out early and there was a big difference," Brooklyn coach Kenny Atkinson said. "We came out like mush for some reason."

Nets center Brook Lopez said, "We have to realize we're playing for each other. We have to hold ourselves and each other accountable. We don't want to let our team down so we have to go out there, play with a chip on our shoulder, play with energy, be aggressive and just keep battling."

The Nets will be playing their second of three games in a span of about 89 hours since Sunday's game against Philadelphia is a noon tip. Jeremy Lin will miss his fifth straight game with a second strained left hamstring and 23rd overall because of injury.

Brooklyn is 5-17 when Lin does not play and the Nets are also hopeful Rondae Hollis-Jefferson can suit up after sitting Thursday with right hip tendinitis.

Preview: 76ers (9-24) at Celtics (21-14)

Date: January 06, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

BOSTON -- Having dealt with their first off-court issue of the season, the Celtics were preparing to deal with Philadelphia big man Joel Embiid on the court when the teams meet at TD Garden Friday night.

Embiid, whose career has been stalled by physical woes, has been on fire lately, but missed Thursday's practice with a flu bug. He joins teammate Robert Covington (back contusion) as questionable for the game.

The Sixers (9-24, one game ahead of the Brooklyn Nets in the battle for the worst record in the league) have won two straight for the third time this season and seek their first three-game winning streak Friday.

Embiid, who did travel with the team to Boston, has averaged 24 points, seven rebounds, 2.5 blocked shots and four assists in the two games but has scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds per game in his last six games.

The Celtics have a slight roster issue as well, as backup center Tyler Zeller missed Tuesday night's win over the Utah Jazz with a sinus infection, and he still wasn't at practice Thursday.

But the news out of the Celtics centered on Jae Crowder, who went on a Twitter rant after Tuesday's game because the home crowd was cheering for Utah's Gordon Hayward, a potential free agent this summer.

The pair matched up Tuesday and Crowder got the better of it in a Celtics win.

Crowder deleted most of what he said, which included, in caps, "I HEARD THE CHEERING 1/8FOR HAYWARD 3/8 BEFORE THE GAME. I DIDN'T LIKE IT THAT AT ALL. I THINK IT WAS A SIGN OF DISREPECT TO ME FROM THE FANS. THAT SPARKED A LITTLE FIRE IN ME."

Thursday, he apologized for his words, but again said he didn't like the fans cheering for prospective targets, like Hayward and, last year, Kevin Durant.

"I didn't like that, either," he said. "I just remember when I got here a couple years ago and we were however many games under .500, the fans cheered for us. Not one time did they cheer for another player when they came into town. Things have changed since then, I'm aware of that.

"That's never happened in an arena that I've been in. I've never been on the road and got cheered for, or even one of my teammates get cheered for by the opposing team. It's just something different for me that really set me off. I don't like when they cheer for DeMarcus Cousins. I don't like when they cheer for Kevin Durant. I don't think you should do that. That's all I was saying."

Club president Danny Ainge had an interesting take on the event, and quipped Wednesday, "If I can get the crowd to cheer the starting small forwards every game, Jae would play his best. I like that. Whatever it takes to get him motivated to play, I'm OK with. But I agree with (coach Brad Stevens). I'm not worried about Jae Crowder at all."

Said Crowder: "Obviously, I don't want to leave Boston. Obviously, I love it here. Obviously, the fans have treated me great. No doubt about that."

The Celtics (21-14) have won eight of their last 10 games and have won three in a row at home for the first time this season. Friday marks the start of a rarity - back-to-back home game. Boston hosts the New Orleans Pelicans Saturday night.

Isaiah Thomas scored 37 points and added seven assists in the Celtics' 107-106 win at Philadelphia Dec. 3 -- Embiid sat out that game to rest.

Preview: Knicks (16-19) at Bucks (18-16)

Date: January 06, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

MILWAUKEE -- The New York Knicks became the latest victim of Giannis Antetokounmpo's rise to NBA stardom Wednesday night, when the 22-year-old sank a step-back jumper at the buzzer to give the Milwaukee Bucks a 105-104 victory at Madison Square Garden.

Friday night, they'll try to stop Antetokounmpo and the Bucks -- as well as snap a season-long six-game winning streak -- when the teams meet in the back end of a home-and-home set at the Bradley Center.

Antetokounmpo has played himself into consideration for a starting role at the NBA All-Star game next month in New Orleans. With 500,663 votes, he's currently second among Eastern Conference front court players behind Cleveland's LeBron James and has a healthy lead over James' teammate, Kevin Love, who's in third place.

"He should be there, no question about it," center Greg Monroe told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He's definitely playing at an all-star level. It's just making sure we're doing the things we need to do as a team so there's a spot for him in the All-Star Game.

"He's been working on his game nonstop. You can see it; the stuff he does night in and night out, the energy he brings and the plays he makes for himself and others. It's just a testament to how hard he's been working."

Antetokounmpo isn't Milwaukee's only All-Star candidate, either. Forward Jabari Parker is starting to look like the kind of game-changing playmaker the Bucks envisioned when he was taken second overall in the 2014 draft.

"I could care less about the voting," Bucks coach Jason Kidd said. "As long as we have players representing the Milwaukee Bucks, that's all I care about. Right now you look at what Giannis and Jabari are doing, start or not start, hopefully, we can get both of those guys there.

"You've got to win. You look at their numbers, but it comes down to winning. If the team is winning, you have a better chance of having multiple guys go."

As those two have grown, so have the Bucks, who bring a three-game winning streak and an 18-16 record into their rematch Friday with the Knicks, who come in looking to get back on track and salvage what had been an encouraging season.

The Knicks were two games above .500 when they took the court against the Celtics on Christmas Day but it's gone all downhill from there.

"They're in the locker room tired right now," coach Jeff Hornacek, whose team has allowed at least 100 points in each of the six losses during the streak. "That's all you can ask. That's making strides. If we continue to do that, we're going to win games."

Making matters worse is the uncertain status of Kristaps Porzingis, who has missed New York's last three games with a sore Achilles.

Aside from his 20.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, the Knicks lose a strong defensive presence in the front court without him; a presence that would go a long way in neutralizing the Antetokounmpo/Parker tandem down low.

"This club's going through adversity right now. There's no question about it," Joakim Noah said. "Losing sucks. But we just got to bounce back."

New York has won or tied each of the last five season series with the Bucks, including a 2-2 mark against Milwaukee a year ago.

Preview: Heat (11-26) at Lakers (13-26)

Date: January 06, 2017 10:30 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- The misfortunes of the youthful Los Angeles Lakers continued Thursday night with breakdowns in the second half of a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Lakers will try to fix some of their mistakes Friday night when they face the Miami Heat at Staples Center.

The Lakers (13-26) were outscored 13-1 late in the game in a 115-109 loss to the Trail Blazers, managing just the one point in their final eight possessions.

Los Angeles built a double-digit lead in the first half but blew it in the second half to fall for the 16th time in its last 19 games.

"We gave ourselves a chance to win, and we had a lead," Lakers coach Luke Walton said. "We broke down on defense a couple of times down the stretch. And we started searching out some 3s when we need to just continue to push the ball, set hard screens and dive instead of go for a home-run play."

The Lakers were without forward Luol Deng (biceps). However, rookie Brandon Ingram replaced him and delivered a decent effort with 11 points and four rebounds in 37 minutes. Point guard D'Angelo Russell scored 22 points and guard Jordan Clarkson added 21 to lead the Lakers.

Like the Lakers, the Heat have struggled this season. However, they snapped a six-game losing streak with a 107-102 victory in their last outing at Sacramento against the Kings on Wednesday.

A slew of injuries have plagued the Heat (11-26). They lost forward Justise Winslow, who underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder on Thursday. Winslow, the club's first-round pick in the 2015 draft, averaged 10.9 points and 5.2 rebounds in 18 games. Winslow missed 16 games earlier this season with a sore left wrist.

"I really feel for him because I know how much time he put in this summer," Miami coach Erik Spoelstra told the Miami Herald. "He's put in as much time as anybody. I know how much it means for him to be here (with his team) and be able to make an impact."

Center Hassan Whiteside, the team's leading scorer and rebounder at 17.3 points and 14.3 boards per game, has been sidelined the past three games with a bruised retina in his right eye. However, Whiteside is expected to return against the Lakers.

And Heat guard Dion Waiters, who has been out for the last 19 games with a groin injury, could be back in the lineup.

In addition, guard Goran Dragic has been ailing with back problems. Dragic, though, played well against the Kings and scored 19 points.

Miami has gotten a boost from guard Tyler Johnson, who was the NBA's second-leading scorer off the bench to the Lakers guard Lou Williams at 13.8 points per game. Johnson delivered 23 points and a crucial block to help preserve the Heat's victory over the Kings.

In his last five games, Johnson is averaging 17.2 points, four rebounds and four assists and shooting 49.2 percent.

The Heat beat the Lakers 115-107 in their last meeting on Dec. 22 in Miami. They have captured eight of the last nine against the Lakers.
