KEY STAT: There have been 21 goals in the teams’ last five Upton Park meetings

EXPERT VERDICT: These two teams have both scored in their last five Upton Park meetings and can do so again. West Ham won 3-0 at Anfield in August and are getting their attacking players back from injury so should be positive but Liverpool can hit the net on the road - a point proven by high-scoring wins at Chelsea, Manchester City and Southampton.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Newcastle have scored twice against Arsenal in their last six league meetings

EXPERT VERDICT: Arsenal’s defeat at Southampton was their first in seven matches but they bounced back against Bournemouth and have a fine record against Newcastle, winning their last eight meetings. Newcastle enjoyed a mini-revival but recent results against Aston Villa, Everton and West Brom show old habits die hard.

RECOMMENDATION: Arsenal-Arsenal double result

KEY STAT: The last seven meetings have featured just eight goals

EXPERT VERDICT: Both these teams have experienced big wins and surprise defeats this season but the draw looks the best bet in this game. West Brom showed their battling qualities with a gritty 1-0 win over Newcastle on Monday and Tony Pulis will no doubt have a plan to nullify the threat of Stoke's attacking players.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Bournemouth have scored five goals in their last three away matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Leicester were the surprise package of 2015 but it could be Bournemouth who cause a shock at the King Power Stadium. The Cherries are in good form - their defeat at Arsenal was their first in seven games - and having won against Chelsea and Manchester United this term the visitors could pick off the high-flying Foxes.

RECOMMENDATION: Bournemouth

KEY STAT: Sunderland have failed to score in six of their last nine league games against Villa

EXPERT VERDICT: Sunderland ought to be worried in advance of this relegation six-pointer as they haven’t beaten Aston Villa in nine league meetings. The Villans will take heart from recent draws on the road at Southampton and Newcastle, so don’t underestimate their chances of landing a first league win since the opening day.

RECOMMENDATION: Aston Villa

KEY STAT: Swansea have scored just two goals in six games

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester United are winless in eight games and it’s not a great time to be facing a bogey team. Swansea have won four of their last five against the Red Devils, amazingly each time by a 2-1 scoreline, but United played well in the 0-0 draw against Chelsea and can edge their way to a vital victory.

RECOMMENDATION: Man Utd to win 1-0

NHL notebook: Capitals put Beagle on IR
By The Sports Xchange

The Washington Capitals added to their injury problems when right wing Jay Beagle was placed on injured reserve on Thursday with an upper-body injury.
Beagle, who has six goal and six assists in 36 games this season, was injured Wednesday. He will require surgery and is expected to be sidelined "an extended period of time" according to coach Barry Trotz.
Defenseman John Carlson has a lower-body injury, and he will miss "a few games," according to Trotz.
The Capitals recalled defenseman Aaron Ness from the Hershey Bears of the AHL to replace Carlson on the roster.

--The NHL fined Vancouver Canucks forward Jannik Hansen $2,000 as supplementary discipline for embellishment, the league announced.
Players first get a warning, then are assessed a $2,000 for the next offense.
Hansen was issued a warning for an incident on Nov. 4. He was then fined for an incident in the third period of a game against Tampa Bay on Dec. 22.

--Alexander Khokhlachev was recalled by the Boston Bruins from Providence. The team has assigned defenseman Colin Miller to Providence.
Khokhlachev has skated in four games with the Bruins this season.

--The New York Rangers reached agreement with forward Ryan Gropp on an entry-level contract, the team announced.
Gropp was selected by the Rangers in the second round, 41st overall, of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Preview: Canadiens (19-15) at Bruins (18-12)

Date: January 01, 2016 1:00 PM EDT

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) Since the NHL first experimented with outdoor games more than a decade ago, the Winter Classic has grown into a festival of fresh air hockey that this year included for the first time a professional women's game.

As part of the buildup to the New Year's Day game between the archrival Bruins and Canadiens, the Boston Pride played the Montreal Canadiennes at the home of the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. The two leagues that participated hope it will be a turning point in their effort to gain a footing on the professional women's sports scene.

'What great exposure,' Pride defenseman Marissa Gedman said. 'Especially to have the NHL backing us. That's huge.'

But there is still a way to go: The women's teams played two, 15-minute periods with running time and a friends-and-family crowd of a few hundred people. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Asked what more she could have hoped for, Pride defenseman Blake Bolden said: 'a third period.'

'I couldn't get enough,' said Gedman, who is from the suburb of Framingham and grew up rooting for the Patriots and other Boston teams. 'It was so amazing. I could do that for the rest of my life.'

The first period ended when a Pride player, Denna Laing of Marblehead, crashed into the boards and was taken off on a stretcher. The league said she was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital. No further information on her condition was immediately available.

The women's game was followed by a matchup of NHL old-timers from the Bruins and Canadiens. Outside, a free spectator plaza with live music, family-friendly games and a public skating rink completed the festival atmosphere that has come to surround the Winter Classic and make it the league's signature regular-season event.

Fans booed the Canadiens alumni, but mostly good-naturedly, and the style of play was more reminiscent of a no-defense All-Star game than one of the bone-crunching battles the teams have waged through their history.

Friday's game is not expected to be so genteel - not with the teams separated by one point in the Eastern Conference standings.

'Playing on a stage like this is something you'll remember for the rest of your life,' Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban said. 'It goes beyond just the game of hockey. We know that everybody's got their family and friends here. ... The one thing you want to stress in the dressing room ... is to enjoy it, take it in, drink it in. We want to get the win and the two points. But enjoy the experience because it is just that, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.'

Here is a look at some of the milestones in hockey's return to its outdoor roots:

COLD WAR: It all started in college in 2001, when Michigan State decided to move its hockey game against rival Michigan to the football stadium. The game, which ended in a 3-3 tie, drew a then-record attendance of 74,554 and perhaps convinced NHL officials that an outdoor game was possible.

HERITAGE CLASSIC: Two years later, the Edmonton Oilers celebrated their 25th year in the NHL by playing the Canadiens in the first 'Heritage Classic' - the first regular-season NHL game to be played outdoors. Despite a wind-chill temperature that dipped to minus-22 (Fahrenheit), a crowd of 57,167 in Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium saw the Canadiens beat the Oilers 4-3. Montreal goalie Jose Theodore wore a winter cap over his helmet.

The regulation match was also preceded by an old-timers' game that included Wayne Gretzky and Guy Lafleur, as well as Mark Messier, who was still playing for the New York Rangers at the time.

NEW YEAR'S DAY: The current look of the Winter Classic really took shape on New Year's Day, 2008, when the Sabres hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the home of the NFL's Buffalo Bills. (Pittsburgh won 2-1 on Sidney Crosby's clincher in the shootout.) Snow flurries added to the wintry feel, and the teams switched sides midway through the third period (and again in overtime) to neutralize any advantage gained by wind or sun.

The teams wore vintage uniforms, which has also become a Winter Classic staple.

FROZEN FENWAY: The last time the Winter Classic came to Boston, the festivities ballooned into several weeks of skating- and hockey-related festivities. In addition to the Jan. 1 game between the Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers, which Boston won 2-1 in overtime, the rink was used for men's and women's college games; practice for the U.S. women's Olympic hockey team and, at Mayor Tom Menino's urging, local youth teams and city residents also had a chance to skate on the ice.

MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: After the first Winter Classic, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said he wanted to limit the number of outdoor games so they would remain special. But when the entire 2013-14 season was canceled by the owners' lockout, the league came back the following year with a three-game 'Stadium Series' along with another Heritage Classic game - in addition to the traditional Jan. 1 Winter Classic. (Toronto beat Detroit 3-2 in a shootout at the University of Michigan's Big House with an announced attendance of more than 105,000.)

This year, the league has scheduled two Stadium Series games next month, one in Minneapolis and one in Denver.

Preview: Ducks (14-15) at Canucks (12-15)

Date: January 01, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

Scoring goals has been an ongoing issue for the Vancouver Canucks. The Anaheim Ducks have had little trouble preventing them of late.

The stingy Ducks attempt to ring in the new calendar year with a fourth consecutive win when they visit their Pacific Division rivals Friday night.

Though Anaheim's 67 goals rank last in the NHL, it's gotten just enough offense to support a stellar stretch from John Gibson. The 22-year-old goaltender posted a second consecutive shutout with 21 saves as the Ducks (15-15-6) extended their streak with Thursday's 1-0 victory over Edmonton.

Gibson has yielded two goals while starting all three games of Anaheim's current run and owns a league-leading 1.67 goals-against average in 14 appearances (12 starts) since being promoted from the AHL on Nov. 24. He recorded 14 saves to protect a 1-0 victory at Calgary on Tuesday.

The back-to-back shutouts are Anaheim's first on the road in franchise history.

'We realize that sometimes the goals aren't going to come in bunches and we're playing well defensively right now and we don't need that many goals,' Gibson said. 'We kind of adapted that and hopefully we can keep it going.'

Gibson may be rested in favor of Frederik Andersen for the finale of Anaheim's three-game Western Canada trip. Either could be headed for a light workload with the Ducks' defense yielding few chances and Vancouver (14-15-9) struggling to generate scoring opportunities.

The Canucks have just 13 goals over their last eight games and were shut out for the fourth time in 11 outings during Monday's 5-0 home loss to Los Angeles. They're averaging a meager 23.3 shots over a three-game span that began with 2-1 wins over Tampa Bay and Edmonton.

"(The Kings) were stronger than us in front of both nets, so that was the difference," said captain Henrik Sedin, scoreless over a seven-game stretch while playing through a lower-body injury. "System-wise we were OK, but we didn't get those Grade-A chances where we could get any sustained pressure on them."

Gibson has been aided by a defense that's permitted only 20.8 shots over the past four games.

That unit includes former Canuck Kevin Bieksa, who returns to Rogers Arena for the first time since being traded to Anaheim on June 30.

Bieksa spent his first 10 seasons with Vancouver, appearing in 633 regular-season games and 71 postseason contests. He's faced his ex-team twice this season and was on the ice for all three even-strength goals during the Ducks' 4-0 win on Nov. 30, in which Gibson registered 25 saves for the first of his four shutouts.

Andersen has had success against Vancouver as well, owning a 6-1-2 record and a 1.19 GAA in nine starts. He made 24 saves in a 2-1 shootout loss on Oct. 12.

The Canucks remain without Ryan Miller due to a lower-body injury that's sidelined him for three games. Jacob Markstrom stopped 58 of 60 shots in the Tampa Bay and Edmonton wins before compiling 33 saves against the Kings.

Vancouver is expected to get defenseman Christopher Tanev back from a two-game absence caused by taking a shot off his lower leg against the Lightning on Dec. 22.

The Ducks look to continue their recent success in Vancouver, where they won six straight prior to a 2-1 defeat on March 9. Anaheim has scored 38 goals while going 8-1-1 in its last 10 visits.

Grand Salami - December

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

NHL Hockey Odds and Picks: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews

I don't watch a ton of regular-season hockey. Oh, I follow it closely but I just don't get too excited about watching the games. It really is true that watching the NHL is vastly more different in person than on TV. It might be the best game to watch of the four major U.S. sports in person, especially if you are sitting along the boards. It also helps you can see the puck much better than on your screens.

That said, I do generally watch some of the Winter Classic each year -- always the highest-rated NHL game -- even if it doesn't involve the team I am a fan of. And this year's Classic on New Year's Day features an Original Six matchup between Montreal and Boston at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. Boston is the first team to host a second Classic. It beat Philadelphia 2-1 in overtime at Fenway Park in 2010. It's the first time for Montreal in the Classic. The NHL generally hasn't included teams from Canada because obviously that would hurt American TV ratings and interest.

I think the reason I and many others enjoy the Classic is because of the chance these guys will be playing in the snow like some of us did back in the day on frozen lakes or ponds. The weather conditions in Foxboro for Friday afternoon sadly don't include any snow. It's listed as a high of 42 with zero percent chance of precipitation. We also won't be seeing one of the NHL's best players in the game as Montreal goaltender Carey Price, the reigning Hart and Vezina Trophy winner, remains out with a leg injury. The Habs have been in a funk of late without Price, winning just twice in their past 12 games entering Tuesday. For a while there, Montreal was the Stanley Cup favorite. Now it's +2000 to win the Cup, which are only the seventh-best odds. Boston is at the same price and has lost three straight entering Tuesday. The Canadiens are 2-1 vs. Boston this year. They made a trade on Monday in acquiring goalie Ben Scrivens from Edmonton. So that might mean the Habs don't think Price will be back soon.

Bruins No. 1 netminder Tuukka Rask, who will certainly be in there Friday barring injury, is 1-1 with a 2.02 goals-against average vs. the Canadiens this year. The Bruins will be without center David Krejci, who is week-to-week with an upper-body injury. He was hurt Sunday. Krejci has 11 goals and 22 assists this season.

Here are some other games to watch this week.

NY Rangers at Florida, Saturday: The second-hottest team in the NHL behind Washington? That would be Florida, which took a six-game winning streak into Tuesday and could take the division lead from Montreal. The winning streak is Florida's longest in eight years. The Panthers aren't very good offensively, ranking 17th in scoring and 20th on the power play, but they allow only 2.3 goals per game, which is third in the league. Roberto Luongo has been great in net, with a 2.20 GAA and .924 save percentage. He and Jaromir Jagr (10 goals, 15 assists) are likely the only Panthers players most people would even know. New York hasn't been playing well since late November largely because goalie Henrik Lundqvist is in a bit of a funk. He is 3-5-1 this month with a 3.41 GAA and .890 save percentage. New York won the lone meeting thus far with Florida, 5-4 in overtime in south Florida on Nov. 21. Rick Nash had a hat trick, including the winner. It was New York's seventh straight win in the series.

Dallas at NY Islanders, Sunday: The Stars continue to pace the Western Conference in points and lead the NHL by far in scoring. Their 1-2 forward punch of Jamie Benn (49 points, second in NHL) and Tyler Seguin (47 points, No. 3) is second to none. It's not clear if the Isles will have top goalie Jaroslav Halak here. He missed Tuesday's game in Toronto, not even traveling with the team, due to an upper-body injury. What's up with Isles star John Tavares? My pick for the Hart Trophy, Tavares has only four points this month and is minus-4. It's the first meeting of the season between these teams and the Stars' only visit to Brooklyn.

Preview: Magic (19-13) at Wizards (14-16)

Date: January 01, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Orlando closed out an impressive end to 2015 with two strong defensive showings, though the Washington Wizards might not be the right team for the Magic to try to carry the habit into the new year against.

The Southeast Division foes meet Friday night in Washington with Orlando seeking an eighth win in 10 games, but that'll require putting an end to the Wizards' 10-game winning streak in the series.

The Magic (19-13) continued their season turnaround with Wednesday's 100-93 win over Brooklyn to conclude a 3-1 homestand on which they shot 41 percent from 3-point range. The Nets shot 42.2 percent overall, and Orlando has limited its last two opponents to 8 of 40 from beyond the arc.

"Our defense was very good on the last several possessions of the game. That was the game right there," coach Scott Skiles said. "We needed multiple stops in a row. ... We didn't play very well but still came out with a win."

Nikola Vucevic had 20 points and nine rebounds, and the center has averaged 23.1 points and shot 57.7 percent over seven straight games of reaching at least 20 as his scoring gets closer to what the Magic came to expect with his career-best 19.3 points a season ago.

Elfrid Payton, who has been hampered by a sprained right ankle, started at point guard, but he played just five minutes in the first half. Shabazz Napier started the second half and Payton sat out the remainder of the game, which might have impacted their offensive flow.

"There were a lot of situations tonight when we lacked some ball movement, but luckily we were able to get it back at the end, and get baskets and stops," said Tobias Harris, who's averaged 15.6 points and shot 55.8 percent in the last five games. "We were there for each other, we were scrappy defensively."

This is the third meeting of the season, and in the first two it's been the Washington perimeter defense making the difference by holding the Magic to 9 of 44. The last, however, came back on Nov. 14 when Orlando was 5-6 and on its way to a 6-8 start before the 13-5 span that has it within a game of Atlanta for the division lead. Nevertheless, the 108-99 defeat was the Magic's eighth straight loss in Washington.

The Wizards (14-16), in last place but just five games back of the Hawks, have responded to a four-game winning streak that got them back to .500 by dropping their last two with weak offensive efforts. They averaged 108.3 points and shot 49.1 percent on the winning streak but have fallen to 91.0 and 39.7 in the last two, including Wednesday's 94-91 defeat in Toronto.

Granted, they had just nine players available and top scorer Bradley Beal has missed the last 10 games with a leg injury, but John Wall has seen the team excel in that time.

"We don't care whether we have a full team or not," said Wall, who has seven straight double-doubles but has shot 37.0 percent in his last eight. "We still feel like we should have won this game. We had an opportunity to win this game, still, without playing well for three quarters."

Otto Porter had 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting and has averaged 20.5 while shooting 61.5 percent in the consecutive losses. He's totaled 16 points on 7-of-23 shooting in the two wins over Orlando.

Preview: Mavericks (19-13) at Heat (18-13)

Date: January 01, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

Despite several factors falling in their favor in a victory over the NBA's best team, the Dallas Mavericks - point guard J.J. Barea in particular - have to be feeling good about their recent play.

Coming off a romp against defending champion Golden State, the Mavericks will try to extend their winning streak to five when they visit the Miami Heat on Friday night.

Starting with a victory over Memphis on Dec. 18, Dallas (19-13) has won five of six to climb into second place in the Southwest Division - though that still leaves the club eight games behind 28-6 San Antonio.

Things worked out perfectly Wednesday when star Warriors guard Stephen Curry sat out with a bruised lower left leg. With Curry's backcourt mate Klay Thompson struggling and the Mavs enjoying one of their best shooting nights, the result was a 114-91 win that marked only the third time Golden State has failed to score 100 points this season.

Dallas had dropped the prior seven meetings while allowing 112.1 per game.

"They were a little short-handed tonight. Might have made a little difference," guard Devin Harris said. "The attention that (Curry) brings in shotmaking and the way the offense flows with him out there, obviously was a little bit different tonight."

The Mavs allowed the Warriors to shoot just 40.7 percent while converting 51.2 percent of their own shots and 14 of 27 from 3-point range. They had a 46-26 scoring edge in the paint and even outworked up-tempo Golden State 21-18 on the break.

Again, though, all without Curry, whose absence played a role in his team's struggles but can't explain away the strong offensive work of Dallas behind Barea, who scored 23 points in another big game filling in for injured starter Deron Williams.

Williams has missed two games with a strained hamstring and it's unclear if he will play in this contest, but with Barea at the point, the Mavs have averaged 113.5 points over their last four - roughly 13 more than their 100.6 average prior to the streak.

Barea has been fantastic in that span, shooting 63 percent overall and 18 of 36 from 3-point range. Although Barea's assist total is 27 in his starts, the Dallas offense seems to be flowing better and has posted at least 25 twice in the last four games.

"J.J.'s been great, shooting the ball incredibly well but taking good shots," Harris said after Barea went 5 of 7 from beyond the arc Wednesday.

Sustaining that surge could hit a bump against the Heat (18-13), who sit among the NBA leaders in points (95.5) and field-goal percentage (43.1) allowed per game. Miami, though, has stumbled with a 3-3 mark while allowing 100.2 per game in its last six.

The Heat tightened things up considerably against the Grizzlies on Wednesday, allowing 83 points through regulation, but they were outscored 16-7 in overtime of a 99-90 loss. Chris Bosh scored 22 but was 3 of 14 after halftime and Dwyane Wade added 19.

"We showed some grit to get to that point," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Then we had a couple of decent looks at the end of regulation and just couldn't put them down."

The Mavs had lost seven consecutive meetings before a 93-72 victory Jan. 30 in Miami which both Wade and Luol Deng missed with injuries. Prior to that, the Mavs went 20-2 in the regular-season series from 2001-2010.

Preview: Hornets (17-14) at Raptors (20-13)

Date: January 01, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Toronto Raptors managed to grab their slim lead atop the Atlantic Division without their preferred starting lineup intact.

After their top five were reunited for the first time in more than a month and won despite some lackluster play, the Raptors continue trying to get those pieces to jell in a New Year's Day matchup with the Charlotte Hornets.

The Raptors (20-13) were tied with Boston for first in the Atlantic after beating the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 20 - the last time DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Lowry, Luis Scola, Jonas Valanciunas and DeMarre Carroll started together before Wednesday.

Valanciunas was sidelined 17 games by a hand injury and came off the bench in Monday's loss in Chicago after Carroll, who missed nine with a bruised knee, returned for Saturday's victory at Milwaukee.

Despite the injuries, Toronto went 11-6 from Nov. 22-Dec. 26 and leads the Celtics by 1 1/2 games thanks in part to center Bismack Boyombo and a rotation of forwards. While Wednesday's reunion of regulars wasn't pretty, DeRozan led the way and Boyombo played well to lift Toronto to its fourth win in five games, 94-91 over Washington.

The Raptors had a miserable night from the field, shooting 34.1 percent and 6 of 24 from 3-point range, but DeRozan made up for his 9-of-24 performance by hitting all 15 free throws to finish with a season high-tying 34 points.

Valanciunas, averaging 12.7 points and 9.3 rebounds when he was hurt, went 4 for 7 in 20 minutes with eight points and nine rebounds. Boyombo added 12 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks.

Carroll shot 2 for 10 and Lowry 2 of 12.

"Every game is going to be a process and I think it's going to continue to get better," said DeRozan, whose team was averaging 101.6 points before Valanciunas was injured. "It feels good to be healthy again."

Trying to get the frontcourt clicking could prove difficult against the Hornets (17-14), who rank fourth with 38.8 points allowed in the paint per game.

Charlotte might take a hit in that department with center Al Jefferson out at least six weeks because of knee surgery. However, he's played only twice since Dec. 2 and the club boasts several 7-footers, including Cody Zeller and Frank Kaminsky.

"We've got to play with whoever's healthy, whoever's on the court," Zeller told the team's official website.

That size could again cause Toronto to rely more on its outside shot, which wasn't much help in the first meeting of the season. The Raptors went 9 for 39 from behind the arc in a 109-99 overtime road loss to the Hornets on Dec. 17.

Toronto, fourth in the NBA with 96.4 points allowed per game, is facing a Hornets team that has slumped of late with six losses in nine.

Giving up 99.7 points a contest, Charlotte fell to 13-2 when scoring 100 or more with Wednesday's 122-117 loss to the Clippers. Kemba Walker had 29 points, Kaminsky added 20 and Nicolas Batum and Jeremy Lamb chipped in 19 apiece, but the Hornets allowed Los Angeles to shoot 52.1 percent overall and 15 of 30 from beyond the arc.

"We started the game with no defensive mentality - we couldn't guard them," coach Steve Clifford said during a brief postgame presser during which he took no questions.

In addition to missing Jefferson, Charlotte played without guard Jeremy Lin (ankle), who scored a season-best 35 points against the Raptors on Dec. 17. DeRozan put up 31 for Toronto in that contest.

Preview: Knicks (15-18) at Bulls (18-12)

Date: January 01, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

When they last faced one another two weeks ago, the Chicago Bulls appeared to be in turmoil while the New York Knicks were riding a season high-tying winning streak.

The tide has since turned for both teams heading into a New Year's Day rematch.

While Chicago's Derrick Rose uncertain to play, the Knicks hope to stay focused under difficult circumstances Friday night when they look to end a nine-game skid at the United Center.

Carmelo Anthony had 27 points on Dec. 19 when New York (15-18) cruised to a 107-91 home win over the Bulls that capped a four-game run in which the club averaged 108.3 points.

The Knicks dropped their next four while scoring just 93 per game, then improved to 11-2 when putting up at least 100 as they ended their skid in Tuesday's 108-96 home win over Detroit.

Anthony led six players in double figures with 24 points as New York shot 54.4 percent.

The mood changed early Wednesday when the Knicks learned Cleanthony Early was shot in the leg by masked robbers who demanded his 'gold' as he left a strip club at 4:30 a.m.

Coach Derek Fisher said Early's injuries weren't life-threatening. The theft comes about 10 days after Derrick Williams was robbed of $617,000 in jewelry from his home.

'We talked to our guys about the situation, just reminded them how serious this is and that there are certain things that come with being visible in terms of being a public figure,' he said.

The Knicks will certainly have Early on their minds as they look to end their woes in Chicago. They've dropped 24 of their last 27 games there and haven't won there since November 2010.

After Chicago's 147-144 four-overtime home loss to Detroit on Dec. 18, Pau Gasol stayed home to rest the following night when the exhausted Bulls fell easily at Madison Square Garden.

Afterward, Jimmy Butler questioned whether first-year coach Fred Hoiberg was coaching hard enough or adequately holding players accountable. The Bulls then fell 105-102 back at home on Dec. 21 to a Brooklyn team that entered the contest just 1-12 on the road.

Chicago (18-12), however, has since turned things around with impressive victories over Oklahoma City, Toronto and Indiana. The club also enjoyed one of its best offensive showings of the season despite its only loss in the past four games, 118-111 at Dallas on Dec. 26.

The Bulls could be missing Rose after he couldn't play in Wednesday's 102-100 overtime home win over the Pacers due to hamstring tendinitis. Aaron Brooks filled in nicely with a season-high 29 points while hitting 4 of 7 from 3-point range in 40 minutes off the bench.

After the victory over Indiana, all seemed better when Butler praised Hoiberg.

'I think that he's holding me accountable for everything,' the All-Star guard said.

Butler bounced back with 28 points - including the winning tip-in with 1.2 seconds left - after totaling 22 on 6-of-18 shooting over his previous two games. Bobby Portis has stepped up with Joakim Noah (shoulder) out, totaling 28 points and 16 rebounds in his last two.

The rookie had season highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds in the first meeting with the Knicks.

New York's Arron Afflalo has averaged 20.1 points while making 15 of 26 (57.7 percent) from beyond the arc over his last eight games against the Bulls dating to his time with Denver.

Preview: 76ers (3-31) at Lakers (6-27)

Date: January 01, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

The Philadelphia 76ers believe they're starting to come around heading into a rematch with the team they defeated to end the longest losing streak in major U.S. professional sports.

One of these clubs will capture back-to-back wins for the first time in at least nine months Friday night when the 76ers visit the Kobe Bryant-led Los Angeles Lakers for the last time.

After falling to an astonishing 1-30, including 0-18 on the road, Philadelphia snapped a 23-game losing streak away from home with Saturday's 111-104 victory over Phoenix. The 76ers lost by four at Utah two nights later before pulling off a 110-105 win at Sacramento on Wednesday.

Nerlens Noel led the way with a season-high 20 points and nine rebounds, while Ish Smith had 18 points and nine assists. Noel has averaged 17.3 points on 22-of-28 shooting to go along with 8.7 rebounds in his last three, while Smith has put up 18.0 points and 8.3 assists in three games since being acquired from New Orleans on Dec. 24.

Jahlil Okafor, taken third behind Lakers guard D'Angelo Russell in the June draft, had 10 points and 10 boards in 19 minutes in his return from a two-game absence due to a sore right knee.

"I think this team can really go in a lot of different ways,' Noel said. 'We're really rolling and coach (Brett) Brown has put us in a better position to win some games and be productive. It was only a matter of time. Now it's starting to click.'

The 76ers easily rank last in the NBA with 92.5 points per game, but they're showing some life offensively. They've averaged 103.0 in the past four, reaching at least the 110 mark twice.

That surge could continue against a Los Angeles team that ranks near the bottom of the league with a 46.5 defensive field-goal percentage and 107.2 points allowed per game.

The 76ers (3-31), who haven't won back-to-back games since March 18 and 20, had lost a historic 28 straight dating to last season before celebrating a 103-91 victory over the Lakers on Dec. 1 in Bryant's last game in his Philadelphia hometown.

Robert Covington had 23 points and hit 5 of 11 from 3-point range, while Noel contributed 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Bryant paced the Lakers (6-27) with 20 points but was 7 for 26 from the field and 4 of 17 from 3-point range.

Since averaging 15.8 points and 31.3 percent shooting in his first 20 games, Bryant has scored 20.6 with a 40.3 mark over his last nine. Despite playing better, the future Hall of Famer says there's no chance he'll change his mind about retirement.

"I feel completely at peace," Bryant said. "Truly at peace. It's time.'

Jordan Clarkson had 24 points, former Sixer Lou Williams added 19 and Russell scored 16 as Los Angeles ended a four-game slide with a 112-104 victory at Boston on Wednesday.

Russell has totaled 34 points while going 6 for 13 from 3-point range in his last two home games.

The Lakers are looking for their first back-to-back victories since a three-game run Feb. 22-27. They had won three straight in this series before the December loss.

NBA Odds: Friday, January 1, 2016 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews

With tongue firmly planted in cheek, the most important game of New Year's Day in the NBA probably is Philadelphia at the Los Angeles Lakers. Toilet Bowl 2! They are clearly the two worst teams in the NBA, but the winner of this one, especially if it's the Sixers, could hold a crucial tiebreaker for the most ping-pong balls in the 2016 draft lottery. Also be aware that Philly owns the Lakers' 2016 first-rounder if it's outside the Top 3. That's looking unlikely unless L.A. slips two spots in the lottery. The big prize this summer will be LSU freshman Ben Simmons. Only five games Friday, which is usually one of the busiest days of the week. That's obviously because of the holiday as most people are going to stay home and recover from the night before. And with college football stealing the spotlight, there are no national TV games available.

Magic at Wizards (-2.5, 205)

Orlando beat visiting Brooklyn 100-93 for its second win in a row Wednesday, rallying from a 10-point second-half hole. Nik Vucevic continued his recent fine play with 20 points (seventh straight game with at least that many) and nine rebounds. Magic starting point guard Elfrid Payton was questionable with a sprained ankle and lasted only five minutes. Washington lost a second straight Wednesday, 94-91 in Toronto -- the Wizards have been held to 91 points in both losses. They missed three late 3-pointers to tie. Bradley Beal missed a 10th straight game and there's no reason to expect him here. Orlando has lost 10 straight to Washington, including two this year. The teams opened the season against one another and John Wall won it on a floater with 12.7 seconds left for an 88-87 victory in Florida. On Nov. 14 in D.C., the Wizards won 108-99. Orlando is a much better team now, however.

Key trends: The home team has covered four straight meetings. The "over/under" has gone under in four of the past five.

Early lean: Magic and over.

Mavericks at Heat (-3.5, 198)

Dallas won a fourth straight on Wednesday in stomping the Steph Curry-less Warriors 114-91. Mavs backup point guard J.J. Barea had 23 points in starting for the injured Deron Williams. Barea has made 17 of his past 23 3-pointers. Miami dropped its second in a row Tuesday, 99-90 in OT at Memphis. That dropped the Heat to 9-2 vs. the West this year. First meeting of the season between these teams. They split last year, each winning on the road. The Mavericks snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Heat in the regular season with a 93-72 win at Miami on Jan. 30, 2015.

Key trends: The Mavs are 1-7 ATS in their past eight following a double-digit win. The under is 10-3-1 in Miami's past 14 vs. the West. The over is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings.

Early lean: Heat and under.

Hornets at Raptors (-6.5, 198.5)

Charlotte lost 122-117 at home to the Clippers on Wednesday. And the news got worse as the Hornets had just gotten back Al Jefferson from injury/suspension but now he's hurt again (knee) and will miss six weeks. Thus don't expect him back until after the All-Star break. He is averaging 12.5 points and 6.1 rebounds in 19 games this season. Toronto beat the Wizards by three on Wednesday. DeMar DeRozan had 34 points, including 15-for-15 from the free-throw line. Jonas Valanciunas was back in the starting lineup after recently returning from a long injury absence and had eight points and nine rebounds. Charlotte won the first meeting 109-99 in overtime at home on Dec. 17. Jeremy Lin had 35 points and Kemba Walker 27. DeRozan scored 31 points and Kyle Lowry added 20 for the Raptors. Toronto rallied from a 16-point deficit late in the third to force OT. The Hornets were 1-1 in Toronto last year.

Key trends: The underdog is 7-2 ATS in the past nine meetings. The over is 5-2 in the previous seven.

Early lean: Raptors and over.

Knicks at Bulls (-6.5, 198.5)

New York ended a four-game slide with a 108-96 win over Detroit on Tuesday. Robin Lopez outplayed Andre Drummond with 11 points, seven rebounds and a season-high six blocks. The Knicks are 11-2 when they score at least 100 points this year. Chicago scratched Derrick Rose with hamstring tendinitis about an hour before Wednesday's game vs. Indiana but the Bulls won 102-100 in OT on a Jimmy Butler tip-in. Aaron Brooks got heavy minutes with Rose out and had 29 points. New York won the first meeting between these two at home, 107-91 on Dec. 19. The Bulls were totally gassed then as it was the night after going four overtimes in a loss to Detroit. Carmelo Anthony led all scorers with 27. Rookie forward Bobby Portis had the best night of his brief career with 20 points and 11 rebounds for Chicago. Pau Gasol didn't bother making the trip. The Bulls have won eight straight at home in the series.

Key trends: The home team is 5-2 ATS in the past seven. The over is 5-0-1 in the previous six.

Early lean: This is one of those games where Bulls always seem to play down to their opponent after a big win. Take the Knicks whether Rose plays or not.

76ers at Lakers (-4.5, 201)

Philly has a chance here for its first consecutive victories of the season as it won in Sacramento 110-105 on Wednesday. New addition Ish Smith had 18 points. The team is 2-1 since his trade from New Orleans. Ish Smith! Jerami Grant finished with 16 points, a career-best 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. The Lakers also pulled a surprise Wednesday, winning 112-104 in Boston. Kobe Bryant had 15 points and 11 rebounds in his final Beantown game. It was his 173rd career double-double. Philly got its first win of the year and ended a 28-game losing streak that was the longest in major U.S. pro sports with a 103-91 home win over the Lakers on Dec. 1 in Kobe's final game in his hometown. Bryant had 20 points but was just 7-for-26 shooting. Robert Covington led the 76ers with 23.

Key trends: The Lakers are 1-10 ATS in their past 11 after a win. The under is 6-2 in their past eight at home.

Early lean: 76ers and under.
