Friday 08/07/09 service plays chatter/comps/requests & gm strategy...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

FYI, let's limit the comps to the first 2 pages, I need this thread to be used for chatter and what games members would like to pick up or split. Service thread getting way to much chatter. Ty.

not with Rivers when Matt Rivers says dog it is indeed an underdog play, plus the whole fact he does actually say its an underdog.....in the words......

I have bombed away with these unique 200,000♦ at a ridiculous pace and am releasing my first one of the entire season today. Not only am I going to bang this thing home but am going to do it with a team that is not expected to win, say the oddsmakers.

This line is just wrong, flat out wrong! My team should be the favorite, period!

Friday GC totals comp

On Friday night the Bonus Play is on the under in the TampaBay-Seattle game.Rotation numbers 929/30 at 10:10 eastern.I liked this play better at 8 flat. However Ill still give it a go at 7.5.The pitching matchup is what intrigues me with this game.Seattle has Felix Hernandez going tonight and he has been lights out at home vs the Rays.In 22.7 innings he has allowed just 2 earned runs.He has a solid 2.78 era and will no doubtedly get the job done again here tonight. The Rays have one of my favorite pitchers this year going in J.Niemann.This guy gets no credit. You dont hear a peep about him, yet he has been solid all year in a tough division. In his last 3 starts he has a 3.18 era.In his lone start in Seattle back in April he did well going 5.7 innings allowing a modest 2 earned runs. This game should be a well pitched game here tonight.Congrats to those who had the big 6 unit over selection in the Yankee game last night.Game was over by the 5th inning. On Friday I have a rare Huge blowout dog system as the lead play. This game is also equipped with a nice pitching advantage for those interested. For the Bonus Play go under in the Seattle-Tampa game bol GC-

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers (-119, 9.5)

A quick glance at the stats shows the Twins are a terrible road team, who are entering the series against the Tigers on a two-game losing streak. But look even closer.

Minnesota has owned Detroit this year, going 6-2 against the Tigers. Only two of the games in the season series were played in the Motor City so far, which the teams split, but the Twins have left little doubt who was the better team earlier in the year.

The Twins are averaging 6.5 runs per game against the Tigers, with their average margin of victory coming by three runs. Detroit enters the series having taken three of four from the lowly Orioles, but dropped its previous two series to the Indians and Rangers.

"That's a pesky team,” Tigers pitcher Edwin Jackson said of the Twins to the Associated Press. “That's a team that when you go out, you know you're going to have to battle against them.”

Pick: Twins +111

Atlanta Braves at Los Angeles Dodgers (-130, 7.5)

The Dodgers are one of the best home teams in baseball, but haven’t been playing like it, losing four of their past six at home and six of 10 overall.

Bad time to play the Braves. Atlanta has won six of its past 10 road games and two straight overall. On the road, the Braves are sixth in team ERA (4.05) and have amassed 378 strikeouts against 180 walks. The team also hits better on the road then at home. Atlanta is hitting .266 overall, but rakes at a .271 clip in an opponent’s yard.

The Dodgers offense hasn’t had much to brag about lately. A 17-run outburst against the Brewers masks the fact the team has scored five or fewer runs in eight of its past 10 games.

Pick: Braves +122

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants)

When the reigning NL Cy Young winner takes the mound on Friday, it will have been 16 days since a team scored an earned run against him.

Lincecum (12-3, 2.18 ERA) allowed a pair of unearned runs in a 4-2 win over the Pirates on July 27. He allowed just four hits and struck out 15 (yes, 15) over nine innings. In his most recent start, a 2-0 win over the Phillies, he gave up seven hits but allowed no one to cross home plate in eight innings of work.

And you especially don’t want to face him at home. Over the past 55 2-3 innings at AT&T Park, Lincecum has allowed a meager six earned runs.

“Tim did a marvelous job yet again,” Giants closer Brian Wilson told reporters. “Whatever he seems to do doesn't baffle us - he never ceases to amaze.”

Ricky Nolasco (Florida Marlins)

The Marlins couldn’t wait to get out of Washington after falling apart in their series against the Nationals. But for Nolasco, it doesn’t really matter who he faces lately.

Nolasco (7-7, 5.00 ERA) has churned out three straight quality starts, allowing just three earned runs over the past 20 1-3 innings. In his most recent start, he allowed only one run on four hits over seven innings in a victory against the Cubs. In the win, he also struck out eight against only one walk on just 97 pitches.

The right-hander is 1-0 over his past three starts with a 1.33 ERA, 0.89 WHIP (walks + hits over innings pitched) and 23 strikeouts. Not bad for a guy demoted to the minors earlier this year.

“A couple of guys I fell behind and ended up walking, but once I was ahead, the slider was there and they just kept swinging over the top of it so I kept throwing it,” Nolasco told the Associated Press of a recent start. “It was late, sharp. So, I'm going to keep throwing it until guys prove they can hit it."

Slumping

Jason Berken (Baltimore Orioles)

Each start is like a reoccurring nightmare for Berken: hordes of players simply smacking his pitches for line drives over and over again.

Berken (1-9, 6.93 ERA) is allowing opponents to hit .315 against him as he has allowed at least seven base runners in each of his past seven outings. In his most recent start, an 18-10 loss to the Red Sox, he lasted just 1 1-3 innings after he coughed up six earned runs on seven hits and two walks.

And it’s hard to find any encouraging numbers for the 25-year-old. He has struck out just 33 against 25 walks and has an astronomical 1.71 WHIP.

"I think he's stuck and we have to do something to get him out of neutral," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said of his young hurler.

Mark Buehrle (Chicago White Sox)

The way the left-hander has pitched in his past two starts, it feels like his perfect game was last year, not last month.

Since extending his MLB-record consecutive outs streak to 45 against the Twins, he has allowed 12 earned runs over his next five innings with no strikeouts. In his most recent start, an 8-5 loss to the Yankees, he was tagged for seven earned runs on 12 hits in just 4 1-3 innings.

"You go out there and get 45 straight guys out, and then today, I can't get two guys out in a row," Buehrle said.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets

Connecticut Sun at Minnesota Lynx (-1.5, 155)

Remember in June when Minnesota looked like a title contender? Well, July didn't go as the Lynx planned.

The Lynx have lost three straight and seven of their past 10 games to fall back to .500 and in the middle of a tight playoff race in the Western Conference. The team also has lost five of its past six home games, with its lone win a two-point, overtime victory against Washington.

"We just have to find ourselves again," Minnesota coach Jennifer Gillom told the Associated Press. "They want to win."

But wanting won’t be enough against the Sun. Connecticut improved its record to 10-9 last week by pasting Detroit, 83-65. The Sun also are a respectable, 4-5 straight up on the road, and 5-3 against the spread.

Connecticut isn’t perfect, but will do enough to leave the Lynx with another loss.

Pick: Sun

Detroit Shock at Washington Mystics (-4.5, 154)

On Friday night, Detroit will try to do something it has accomplished only one other time this season: win consecutive games.

The defending champions have been ravaged by injuries and are still struggling to find chemistry. Their biggest problem is a mediocre defense, which is allowing an average of 78 points per game. The team also is looking for Cheryl Ford (8.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg) to keep improving. She has been slow to regain her elite form following offseason knee surgery.

Meantime, the Mystics already posted a 75-69 win over the Shock in Michigan earlier this year and have won three of five overall. But Ford didn’t place in the team’s earlier meeting. Look for her presence to make the difference this time.

Pick: Shock

CFL WRITE-UP

Friday, August 7

Toronto (2-3) @ Montreal (4-1)-- Alouettes lost for first time last week in Edmonton; they're 2-0 at home, winning by 34-13 pts. Eskimos threw for 13.3 yds/attempt last week. Toronto had 12 points, seven turnovers in 13-12 home loss to Winnipeg, their third loss in last four tilts. Argos are -12 in turnovers last four games- they've been outscored 36-8 in the second half of their last three games.

Saskatchewan (3-2) @ BCLions (1-4)-- BC lost season opener 28-24 in Regina (-2), in game where both sides had six turnovers. Lions allowed 28-31-48-30 points in their losses, 22 in only win- they've turned ball over eight times, allowed 439 rushing yards in last two games, games in which they were outscored 40-3 in second half. Riders are 2-0 on road; underdog covered four of their five games.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Toronto Blue Jays Toronto Blue Jays
-1½+125 at BETUS > 12h.

TOR -1.5 (+128): Baltimore has been playing very poorly losing 5 of last 6 games. BAL has been giving up runs at a break neck pace and with Berken going today for them we might see another high scoring affair. Berken has given up 13 runs in 13 innings over his last three games (0-3). Lucky for TOR they should not give up many runs today as they have there young ace pitcher Romero who has won 3 games in a row with a 3.45 ERA. In those games the hitters have also backed him up with a ton of run support. Can't imagine how TOR does not win by R/L today in an easy win. SCORE TOR 8 - BAL 3

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees Boston Red Sox
OFF at BODOG > 12h.
Take the Boston Red Sox on the Moneyline, We are getting great value here Friday night with the Boston Red Sox who have Josh Beckett (13-4, 3.27 ERA) on the mound. The Red Sox are a perfect 8-0 in Beckett's last 8 starts with 5 days rest and they are also a perfect 5-0 in Beckett's last 5 starts against an AL East division opponent. Beckett has pitched solid in his last 3 starts with an ERA of just 2.86 and he allowed just 1 hit in his last start against the Yankees while striking out 8 batters over 6 innings. The Red Sox are 7-1 in Beckett's last 8 starts against the Yankees and they are 9-1 in their last 10 games overall against the Yankees. A.J. Burnett (10-5, 3.89 ERA) was hit hard by the Red Sox in two starts against them this season allowing 13 hits and 11 earned runs over just 7.7 innings and I look for the Red Sox to hit him hard again Friday night. Take the Boston Red Sox as my MLB Bonus Play for Friday night.

Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies Colorado Rockies
-130 at BODOG > 14h.
Coors Field will be the site of a four-game series between the host Colorado Rockies and the visiting Chicago Cubs with the first pitch set for Friday night at 9:10PM EST. Colorado returns home from a ten-game road swing which saw them go 5-5 SU losing the last two games of a three-game set in Philadelphia. Chicago enters off a series win versus the Reds although they failed to score in the final game on Wednesday losing 4 to 0. Not good news for the Cubs as they are 5-14 (-13.0) after a game with a combined score of 4 runs or less this season, 6-14 (-9.9) after scoring 1 run or less this season and 3-18 (-14.7) as an underdog of +100 or higher. Tonight they will hang their hopes on Carlos Zambrano who is 7-4 on the season with an ERA of 3.35. Zambrano is 1-0 his last three trips to the bump with an ERA of 3.24. The Rockies are 56-40 (+27.0) versus a NL starting pitcher whose ERA is 3.50 or better over the last 3 seasons. Colorado will send Ubaldo Jimenez to the hill with a record of 8-9 on the season and an ERA of 3.76. Jimenez has faced the Cubs once this season losing in the Second City 4 to 0. He pitched 3.7 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts. We expect Jimenez to bounce back in this situation with our Pitcher Efficiency Index projecting a solid start for him in this contest. A check of the database gives us a system that is active for tonights game and it says to Play Against any MLB team after being shut out in a loss to a division rival, a team with a winning percentage of 51% to 54% playing a winning team. This system is 32-12 the last five seasons for 72.7% winners and +20.3 Units, over the last three seasons it has posted a record of 19-7 for +11.3 Units. Lay the short price with the host as they grab the all important Game One of this series.

Oakland Athletics vs. Kansas City Royals Kansas City Royals
-130 at BODOG > 13h.
The Kansas City starter Bannister has been excellent in 7 home starts this season posting a 2.11 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, and an almost 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Bannister is 6-2 in his last 8 team starts when installed as a favorite. The Royals are 6-2 in the last 8 versus Oakland. The Oakland starter Mazzaro enters the game in horrible form off of his last 4 starts posting a whopping 11.44 ERA and 2.65 WHIP. Mazzaro is 1-9 in his last 10 team-starts overall. Oakland is 7-19 in the last 26 on the road versus a team with a less than .500 winning percentage. Play on the Kansas City Royals as my free selection of the night.
