Freshman ineligible?

The document, which shows football and men’s basketball as the only sports with graduation rates less than 75 percent across the NCAA, states that a push for freshman ineligibility would benefit athletes academically. Men’s basketball and football players lag behind other sports in terms of academics, according to data provided in the document. Among the 34 sports listed in the Graduation Success Rate data, football and men’s basketball ranked last in the 2004 to 2007 cohort, according to the document. Among the 38 sports listed in the Academic Progress Rate data from 2009 to 2013, those two sports also ranked last.

The proposal examines “the imbalance observed in those two sports” and cites that football and men’s basketball student-athletes account for less than 19 percent of Division I participants, yet they account for more than 80 percent of academic infraction cases. It also suggests applying current academic eligibility standards for freshman student-athletes to sophomores if the “Year of Readiness” is approved.

This will NEVER happen. Not sure why they are wasting time bringing it up...

Kentucky basketball....what a GREAT example for a college education.

Hey NCAA...come off your XXXXXXX highhorse and just name the schools who are minor leagues for the NBA.

NCAA pretense is "PUKE" when they talk about student athletes education...I hate the way Kentucky conducts basketball

Using a University as a minor league for pro basketball...tell it for what it is and stop the pretense of the NCAA cares about EDUCATION of its players....kinda like Obama thinks we have a problem with terriorest.

Dumb. This isn't 1945. Old white people always trying to fuck things up.

It isn't just "old-white people" Sooner....the feminists (lesbians) that are firmly entrenched in the NCAA policy making decisions for a long time, have been wanting to put big-time college football down ever since they knew they (women) couldn't play a real "mans game". Never mind that it is football that subsidizes all women's sports. Deep down, they resent that college football has reached such a high-level of success in American culture.

NCAA Hoops is a joke. Kids who do not know how to spell their name are playing one year and then leaving. These kids, 90% or more black, know absolutely nothing else. More end up in prison than the NBA. We are talking alleged college kids here. Football is not quite as bad beause rarely do you see a kid go one and out. Two and out can be very dangerous also. Do you really think tht Jameis Winston, Johnny football, and other two and out players are going to last in the NFL? Highly unlikely. I would adopt the rule just to shut down the bsketball riasco gthat college hoops really is. I do not think it makes much difference in football.

I think it's just a bunch of smart but stubborn people running college sports but tired of hearing critics allege that sports commitments are preventing these kids from getting a proper education. I still think this is most likely a PR stunt for now. There are two UNC athletes that are suing the school and the NCAA on the education issue, claiming their sports commitments hampered their ability to choose certain majors and seek the education they wanted. The problem with this whole deal is football of 2015 isn't the same as football from 1972. You can't go back to the 70's. Not with just 85 schollies to give out.

GoS, let's cut the "Mr. Niceguy" act out. You could care less about these athletes, just like I could care less. If you really are a gambler, all you want to see is the team that you wagered on win. Who is on the team that wins and makes you money is totally besides the point. These guys may as well be race horses. Put them in a barn. Feed them. Train them. Once a week let them win a game for you. Then back into the barn. If you look at the intelligence that many of these players have, it is a perfect scenario. Have you listened to those fools try to carry on a conversation? 6th graders make more sense. They are animals to be used, and nothing more. They get 100 times more money than they are worth. Let us make as much off of these guys as possible.

This is why I find that 90% of what you type on here very troubling. The problem with you is you don't care about anybody in general. It goes way beyond athletes. You've already made that abundantly clear. And I would bet it also carries over in your personal life. So don't speak for anybody here. And especially don't speak for me.

Counterattack for the lawsuits / threat of unions. A number of commissioners have brought it up, so they've gotten on the same page for whatever reason.

I wonder if this is one of those things where they do a lot of talking, and then slowly let it die. From what I've been reading, Jim Delany is really the big power broker that is pushing this. He floated the idea that "let's just make freshmen ineligible so they can adjust." So they can possibly keep basketball players around longer by getting rid of the one and done mentality. I don't really get the logic behind it. If you make them redshirt, but don't up the minimum years out of HS, then you're hurting the game more than helping. In basketball, if they are good enough they will redshirt, then go directly into the draft. Some might even go overseas for a year. In football if you make them redshirt and they are good enough to leave early, instead of getting 3 years of production out of them you get two. No matter what your opinion is of college football players, I just don't understand how a governing body of any sport can say to someone "you are a member of this team but can't play" when they haven't done anything wrong. It's pretty much like age discrimination, which sounds to me like something coming mainly from a bunch of old farts. Try convincing Bob Stoops this is a good rule. His freshman RB Perine made a bunch of upperclassmen his bitch this past season.

This is the dumbest thing I have heard in awhile. Ummm, if this were the case, it would completely kill their recruiting. If you redshirt in basketball, it means you pretty much stink. You don't see redshirt seniors winning the Wooden award and being a top 5 NBA pick.

Nice pitch to a recruit. "Hey Derrick Rose, come play up here in Minnesota, we will sit you out for a year to concentrate on academics". I think recruits would just laugh at you. Most don't go to class in high school.
