He didn't participate in any of Kansas City's preseason games and is expected to undergo surgery to repair the knee problem.
In four seasons with the Eagles, Mitchell played in 63 games and recorded 90 receptions for 1,263 yards with five touchdowns.
The highlight of Mitchell's Eagles career came during the 2004 NFC Divisional Playoff game against Green Bay as his catch on a 4th-and-26 play kept the season alive.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs agreed to terms on a two-year contract with offensive tackle Thomas Barnett and waived guard Mike Johnson.
:lolBIG: You know we could really use him back though with Pinky out all year. Then again I don't know if we would want to put up with Freddie the Legend for another year. The ego at WR is already pretty full (still luv ya TO).
