I was raised with the thought that Mothers day was a holiday created by Card companies and florists. My mother taught me to be nice all year long, and to not even bother with the cards or flowers. In England, mothers day fell on March 21st this year, and I didn't even call. All of my friends, called today, and I wasn't one of them. Am I wrong to agree with my parents that mothers day and fathers day are commercial holidays, and that i should just show my love year round? All of this social pressure is getting to me, but I am sticking with the program. Commercial holidays are not for me. I think I should call my mother every day and let her know how much I love her. Much better than spending money on the day of the year that society tell me to. You guys may say I am wrong, but I got this perspective from my parents, and god bless them for that.

Starting with Xmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, Halloweeen, 4th. of July, and a few others have all evolved into commercially driven so-called holidays. Reasons to spend money on things most people don't need, or even want. Monster day for florists and restaurants today.

Birthdays are good!!! Atleast they are your day.

I do not consider myself cheap but I refuse to spend $ on greeting cards or wrapping paper EVER! I cut up a shopping bag to wrap stuff and I'll print a card on my computer.

Wrapping paper is a HUGE waste of time and $ and greeting cards are just assinine...

Heres a greeting to help me say I really like you today , so heres a card that cost 3 bucks, wasting money really sucks...

I celebrate FESTIVUS!

My celebration is basically a day when I make a decent score, and I call my more dysfunctional syblings and tell them that they can pick up 2 dimes from a runner that I was lucky enough to hit the preceeding week.

Generally speaking, people denying that they're not cheap, are. If a card or call makes your mom happy for a couple of bucks, spend it. You might regret it when they're gone. Mom gets a card and roses from me every Mother's Day. Commercial? Yes. Worth it to make her happy? Damn straight.

I get her gift cards in a store so she can go spend it , or a nice gift. I also have nothing against buying flowers. The store bought card and the wrapping paper are where we draw the line.

Most holidays had good intentions.

But (at least in America) now most holidays have been corrupted by economic greed. It is hard to get excited about Christmas when the shopping malls start with the decorations/music in early November.

When I was @ the grocery store last week, I noticed cards for Nurse Day!!!!!

Somebody gets paid to think of this crap. Hallmark probably has a Director of New Business Development, and his/her job is to identify new holidays that can be whored for money. Teacher Day, Secretary Day, Nurse Day. Soon we'll probably have Bus Driver Day and Cashier Day.

Shame on you for not calling your Mother on Mother's Day...

One day you will be without one and then what?
