Notes:

  • Games listed with (?) are rumored, or the universities have merely expressed a desire to schedule them.
  • Note that Notre Dame plans to schedule seven home games each year in 2006-07, and from 2009 onward.
  • Notre Dame will begin playing a rotaing Big East schedule, involving home-and-home series against each of the eight teams, in 2009. They will play three Big East opponents per season—one home, one away, and one at Giants Stadium in N.J.—beginning in 2011.

not a ND hater, always loved them growing up. But their schedules are ridiculous.

Probably too early to start judging their schedule, but...

Michigan/USC sandwiched around non-risky games is the theme.

They always seem to schedule Ga Tech, BC and Penn State for example. Teams that have no shot of becoming powerhouses overnight, or probably ever again. Teams that may be above average, but thats about it. Games that should be winnable. Especially with Reggie Ball and Matt Ryan leaving in successvie years.

No FSU's or Miami's. Too risky. They may become scary good. BC and Ga Tech are much safer.

Penn State sounds good. Not Oklahoma, Nebraska or Tennessee.

Bunch of cupcakes for the Irish other than that. Armed services of course. AKA. GIMMES!

Stanford, North Carolina, Duke. You shitting me.

It's okay to schedule 1 or 2, especially if your schedule is difficult. But when you schedule the armed services it should stop there. At least replace Duke with Texas Tech. And UNC with NC State. Something, anything. All bottom feeders. Replace Purdue with Wisconsin.

Replace Ga Tech with FSU.
Throw in your armed services.
Replace Penn State with Tennessee.

And you got a schedule.

short-term memory?

they played FSU in a home-and-home in 2002 and 2003, not exactly the easiest place to win a non-conference game, considering i think FSU had that run going of 75+ games without losing one of those at home.
Not ND's fault BC ended the contract to play the Irish b/c they bolted for the ACC, and last time i checked BC was holding their own in conference play this year.
Criticizing scheduling BC when they have a pretty good rivalry going? Playing a home and home against a Tech team that's on the verge of a conference championship? A Penn State team that they prob. thought would be alot better considering everyone thought Morelli was the next big thing. Oh yeah, and i forgot how easy it was to play in Happy Valley. Just ask OSU about that last year.
Granted the service academies are weak, won't ever be powerhouses, but i guess there's nothing credible about continuing and re-living past rivalries that, at one time, were the most hyped games around? You think ND's scheduling Navy to help ND? They're respecting a tradition and rivalry that's bigger than just getting a sexier opponent like a mid-level major-conference foe, winning, and having it look better. And yes, ND would roll over many, many of those teams.
I don't see Michigan or USC playing very tough non-conference foes. Arkansas was way better than anyone thought but at its worst at the beginning of the year, so SC rolled. USC prob. scheduled Nebraska when they thought they would be at their worst as well.
ND's criticized for scheduling the likes of Purdue, MSU, but these are the clostes locational rivalries they can have. Yet they'll get criticized for that, although since Michigan plays these teams it's ok b/c they're "conference" games. Right.

Oh and again, short-term memory. ND played Tennessee LAST YEAR and the year before, going into Knoxville and winning a NIGHT GAME (which Herbstreit and others proclaimed as arguably one of the toughest places to play period, let alone at night). But i can already foresee the response: ND played Tennessee when they knew they wouldn't be as good. Right...how many SEC teams can say they've beaten the Vols 2 years in a row during their "down" years?

Haters will continue to hate, lovers will continue to love.

Actually except for '08 the schedules look a whole lot more challenging than this years. But then again we don't know how each of the teams will look when ND plays them.

They do chose their schools very carefully.

Bottom line: Their soft schedule caught up to them last night. It was men against boys. (except for Brady Quinn) ND is not worthy of being in a BCS game. The only reason they will make the BCS is because they were over rated at the beginning of the year, they got their ass handed to them by the one good team they played and then struggled against a bunch of little sisiters of the poor. Then they played another good team and were beaten soundly. The same thing will happen if they play Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

They really dont deserve a BCS Bowl game this year who did they beat to deserve a BCS Bowl.

Michigan will win easily in the Rose Bowl over them

Schedules are made so far in advance you cannot fault teams for what becomes of their opponents, ND has nothing to be ashamed of in that dept.

They've played some of the tougher schedules over the years.

Notre Dame was not that great this year and should have probably lost 5 games instead of 2.

Looks like a more difficult schedule than playing the Big 10 conference each week outside of Ohio State and Michigan.

If you're hating on ND's schedule this year, something's wrong with you. Their strength of schedule is #19 this season! Let's look at some of the other top teams' schedule:

Ohio St - #36
USC - #3
Michigan - #13
Florida - #27
Arkansas - #49
LSU - #25
Lousville - #31

As you can see, ND holds their own compared with the other powerhouses. Also, I think it's way to early to criticize their future schedules until we see how good some of those teams are. All I know is scheduling Michigan and USC every year, is already a pretty good schedule. Heck, look at the bottom of the Big 10 conference. There's at least 3 or 4 cupcakes right there. So don't tell me everyone doesn't have cupcakes.

Being an independent and scheduling cupcakes looks bad, but in reality, they don't get the luxury of playing conference bottom feeders. If they schedule 3-4 tough games a season, that is no different than most national powerhouses that play in major conferences.

They still aren't any good. They played two good teams, and got their asses handed to them both times. And they had two miracle wins against weak teams. Don't even want to hear another word about this mediocre team. The reason why most of us hate you Domers is because of all the preferential treatment you get come bowl time. The fact that people are saying this team has a chance to go to the Rose Bowl is a big, fat joke. But their fans bring that good, Irish Catholic money to the bowl system, so they are considered. Hope they lose 51-3 like the last time they undeservedly went to a BCS bowl.

They're still scrapin him off my stucco.

Michigan State, Purdue, and Navy aren't going away so there is no use complaining about them. Those are traditional rivalries.

Michigan State has top 25 talent and if they had any other coach than Smith the past two years, they would be in the top 25.

Recently, they've scheduled home and home series with TEXAS, LSU, FSU, TENN, PENN ST, and NEBRASKA. 6 college powerhouses. ND really has no control over how good they are any particular year. Not to mention their usual contests with USC and Michigan.

Them beating Navy 43 in a row is kind of embarassing, but that series is not going away. They don't play Air Force and Army every year.

At least they don't schedule 1-AA teams like a lot of powerhouses do. I mean Florida played W Carolina in November!!!

I do wish they would join a conference but there are only two that would make sense (Big Ten and Big East). If they played in either one of those conferences, they would be playing just as many cupcakes as they did this year. (maybe more)
