Kevin Maas had 1.5 great months as a 25-year-old. There have been hundreds of players who did the same thing who ended up with equally futile careers.
First thought is Malcolm Butler, next thought is Jeremy Lin on the cover of SI three weeks in a row. Others who come to mind: Johnny Manziel, Mark Fidrych, Buster Douglas and Riddick Bowe, Adam Morrison. Definitely favoring more recent years, which I guess is natural given the nature of a flash
there have not been hundreds of players setting a ML record!
Maas set a major league record for fewest at-bats to reach 10 home runs (72) and finished his season with 21 home runs in just 79 games
There have been lots of players that age to hit homeruns at that rate over a few weeks: Ron Kittle, Joe Charboneau, Jon Nunnaly, Darryl Strawberry, Sam Horn, Larry Sheets, Jay Bruce, Adam Dunn, Fred Whitfield. If he did it at age 20 it would have been meaningful. Phil Plantier was definitely more "flashy" because it came as a 22-year-old. Just because Maas had the benefit to hang out in the minors so much longer than everyone else doesn't make it significant.
but dat upper deck kevin maas rookie card was hot for a second
