I think being able to protest the government is an important thing in a free society. I also think that freedom of speech is an important thing in a free society. With that said, you cannot yell fire in a crowded theater, and given the number of times that burning a flag ends up inciting a physical response (by other citizens, not the government), I have to wonder if we should disallow the specific protest of burning the American flag. You can still go to the same spot, protest whatever it is you are protesting but just don't burn the flag. At the point you burn the flag, you are knowingly inviting violence, in my opinion. While the Fedex driver is in the legal wrong here, I applaud him anyway. When these jerks set out that morning to knowingly bother as many people as they could with their antics, it is hard to feel sorry for them afterwards.
