Joseph Corrao, 45, was arrested after grabbing "Pinky the Dancing Flamingo" from her pen and throwing her to the ground Tuesday evening with such force that her foot was nearly severed, according to a police report obtained by the Tampa Bay Times.
"Pinky was a beloved member of the Busch Gardens Tampa Bay family and made many appearances on behalf of the park's conservation and education efforts," the park said in a statement. "She will be sorely missed."
Corrao was charged with felony animal cruelty, police said.
Pinky was 19 years old and an "ambassador animal" that was popular among park goers for doing the "Flamingo Flamenco" dance.

Usually, the flamingoes in the pen will run away if one puts their hand out, but Pinky is around people more often than most birds, theme park enthusiast Bill Androckitis said.
"Likely, it wasn't an issue for her to be approached," Androckitis told the Tampa Bay Times. "But I just can't, I don't understand. To do that to any animal in the wild or in Busch Gardens is a despicable thing."
Tuesday was not Corrao's first run-in with the law. He has spent a total of about three years in prison since 2010 on charges of aggravated assault on someone older than 65, felony DUI and fleeing police, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.
Corrao was released from his latest term in July 2015.

He had posted to Facebook on Monday about taking his sons to a Tampa Bay Rays game with his sons, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
"all u can drink and eat free," Corrao wrote. "i will be tepsy tonight."
His friends slammed him for the update, saying he needs to "behave himself" and "make a good impression for your kids."
