As a gambler, and a big beer drinker, i need to make at least one change. I am thinking i should start an exercise program. Others have said improving my diet is more important. I would love to know which thing to change first because i can only do one thing at a time.

I am going to try the exercise thing, although i am such a sloth that i may need a personal trainer to keep me going.

you have to have both or it's no good. They go together. You need a good healthy diet and lots of exercise. You can't go to buffets, eat all sorts of greasy foods and pig out and then go to gym and expect to be healthy. And you won't be healthy if you eat a good diet, yet sit on your ass and not do any exercise at all.

To be healthy, you have to follow a good healthy diet, and exercise regularly. But if I had to pick one that is a little more important, I'd say EXERCISE is more important.

It depends on the exercise you are doing. If you are running 60 miles a week and eating bad, I assure you that you will probably still be in great shape, as running is such a rapid burning exercise, that you can really afford to eat whatever you want and still lose weight and be healthy. Running really speeds up your metabolism. You will NEVER see a runner who is overweight or out of shape or not healthy.

Why not start off with some moderation on both ends.

Maybe a 30+ miniute walk a day 5-6 times a week and if you say your diet is bad, limit your fried and what would be considerd junk food to only one item a week.

I think a good start for your diet would be to eat a very healthy breakfast, one that would include grains, fruits, and nuts. This should keep you from indulging during the day.

I personally like to always have frozen berries, walnuts, and raisons in the house to add to my cereal or oatmeal. OJ and pure water are a must too.

Ok, sorry for rambling, but nutrition is a big part of my life............not as much as gambling of course.

Strong proponet of BRISK walking........

1. Very good for your mind.
2. Likely to stick with it as opposed to running.
3. Will lose you weight and has been proven to enhance cardio health significantly.

I would go as far to say, WITH EVERYTHING BEING CONSIDERED, that walking is the IDEAL exercise for most Americans over 35.

my doctor says exercise is the most important thing. of course im sure that is for MY situation.

i think your age, body fat percentage, and overall health have to be considered before answering that question.

By the sound of your paticular situation you probably need both...but more than likely you will be saying the same thing this time next year....Its just not easy to change life habits....Especially when you don`t exercise, I have seen this a million times, people think they can flip on a switch and start eating right and working out 1 hour everyday..

My best advice is to start very slow , whatever exercise you decide to do you should start out with something very easy and add to it...even write down results and goals, and keep track...

The more muscle you have the more calories your body naturally burns, thats a big plus IMO, it allows you to cheat with diet more than someone who just tries to eat well...

Good Luck you will need it..

Dean Ornisch, Andrew Weill, etc..will say both, and I believe them to be right, but if it came to a vote on only one over the other..excercise!

Excercise can keep people that abuse alcohol, cigarettes, garbage nutrition, and even high stress lifestyles(gambling!) quite aerobically fit, by cleansing & balancing out a great degree of it's affects.

Excercise if your talking about quality of life in the main years of living, but diet and proper rest are also needed for one that takes their health seriously, and are focused long term.

Then again there have been stories of feisty little old ladies, that a few even smoked, yet drank plenty of water, some had numerous lovers,etc..their exact secret to such a long life is a mystery!

But the majority of all centenarians are women, and none seem to be sportsbettors..sorry to bust anyone's bubble.

P.S. I'll tell you why starting excercise is the foremost, because once you start it, your body will override your mind's desire for junk, and crave healthy fuels, where as a healthy diet doesn't necessarily ever make many of it's backers excercise nuts..plus the naturally created endorphine rushes of excercise are the best drugs the body will ever know!

i really think you should exercise in the morning before the problems of the day start to deluge you. If you get that out of the way early, you are more likely to get the job done.

Drink at LEAST 6 8oz glasses of pure water daily.

Force yourself to do this!

This is very important.

Personally, I drink nothing other than water, 100% fruit juice, and beer.

Exactly Guru, military basic training routine, as they've conducted massive studies, by using optimum rest first thing in the AM, you have most energy to spend, plus it sets your metabolism/krebs cycle in motion for the day.

Plus once in great shape, it allows recoup time for a second excercise variation in the early evening, when the body temp and muscles are most ready..ex:AM running & PM weight lifting.

they are both important.

My question to all you proud drinkers out here. Have you ever smelled a room where someones liver gave out due to alcohol? My Dad died in his chair due to alcoholism and I will never forget that smell as long as I live. Drinking is absolutely stupid.

Ditto Johnny, sorry for your loss, as I too have one side of my family (surprise..the gambling one!), where happy hour is popular, and know where you are coming from.

I used to drink weekly from age 15 until 22, but now consume alcohol about 5 to 7 times per year..mostly holidays.

Relatives that abuse it or suffer it's effects, are great motivators to abstain now doubt.

thanks

I live close to a road where 27 people died on a 16 mile strtech last year due to DUI. That does not inlcude hundreds of injuries.
I think alcohol is highly over-rated as a party tool.
