Not sure if this is what you're looking for but if you type a space and then the +, I believe it will stay there.

Select the cells that you'd like to format in this manner.

Go to Format => Cells and then select "Custom" in right box (it's titled "Category").

In the upper left box (it's titled "Type") enter "+#;-#;0" without the quotations.

If you wanted the number to display commas (as in +1,000), you'd instead enter in the "Type" box "+#,##0;-#,##0;0" without the quotations.

If you want it to appear on the left side of the cell type: '+200
If you want it to appear centered in the cell type: ^+200
If you want it to appear on the right side of the cell type: "+200

The first character (', ^, ") will disappear once you hit enter.

The only problem with proceeding in this manner is that it will store entered data as text rather that as a number.

This may or may not be of concern.

Changing the cell format, on the other hand, will keep data type as is, only modifying visual display. This will also automatically format any positive numbers in the relevant cells with a leading plus sign, whether manually entered or determined as the result of a formula.

I'll also give myself a little plug and mention that anyone performing any sports betting data manipulation/analysis in Excel should check out my Simple VBA Sports Betting Functions Template for Excel.

Can't you just format a range of cells for "text"? That's what I've done on my spreadsheet when I want to title a column

example.... +8 Scoring

I format the cell where +8 is written to Text
