Work has offered me a re-assigment/promotion/transfer/whatever you wanna call it to Thailand. Bangkok area.

First thing I thought of was the RX (sad isn't it?).

I know some of you guys live there, what's it like for an American?

Harry:

I have lived in Bangkok for 10 tears now. If you have any specific questions feel free to pm me or ask here. Living here is what you make it. Being here for 10 years and living in and just outside Bangkok have seen pretty mush everything. In Bangkok and the tourist areas people are generally nice and friendly. It's not called the "Land of Smiles" for nothing. I would say outside it's mostly the same but you get a different perspective living among everyday Thais.

Depending on the type of person you are this place can drive you crazy at times. Lack of etiquette ( standing in line, being on time), if you are prone to road rage I would not drive here.

Is your company putting you up in a house/ condo? Do you know what area of BKK. It's like moving to Chicago it all depends on where.

All in all its a great place and cant see myself moving back.

Any questions just ask.

You know if its long term or short term? Either way - if you have any tax questions - i could probably help you out or at least try

It's a 1 year assignment. Work would put me up in a condo. Basically their offer is:

25% raise from what I make now
They will pay to put all my stuff in storage
They will fly me home twice
They will fly my family out once
They pay for a furnished condo and car service
They will pay any Thai taxes and pay to have my US taxes done, I'm still on the hook for the federal

I'm not sure exactly where in Bangkok, more details are coming

I'm a single dude and I keep pretty quiet. Work a lot of hours and like to cook my own food, watch some tube/game, play online poker in my free time...that's about it. I don't need much in terms of entertainment.

Also if you didn't know already I'm a sober alcoholic, so I'm not interested in the nightlife per se. I do love to golf.

I'm thinking I could just put one year in, play a shitload of Poker Stars, bet at Pinnacle, stack cash (zero living expenses, I'm a winning poker player and break-even sports gambler), and bang some hookers.

Never been there I just remember VD saying how gambling is strictly prohibited in that country.
Talk to VD I could be wrong but that's what I thought I heard him say many times.

If you can't gamble I'm literally out. Poker is an important part of my life right now, I'm building a nice bankroll and tuning my game up for bigger tournaments including some live ones.

FWIW, Thailand is listed in the Pinny Drop Down menu for joining (the US isn't).
