Glad you weighed in SC. I think the piece is deliberately over-the-top as it seeks to represent man's treatment of both the planet and other life forms as if they were insignificant, and that we have a 'KING' complex. Thus the alien part is the writer's way of reminding us that we too may be seen by others as a lower life form. So after our 'KING' has shot, carved and stomped everything to death he sits on his throne, lights a cigar and then a moment later gets the same treatment. I can picture the aliens reporting back to their superiors re Earth: "Nah, nothing significant going on over there. Whatever good was there they ruined and it's not worth saving. Next Planet!"
