ESPN ends DraftKings-sponsored segments

ESPN said Tuesday that it's pulling on-air segments sponsored by one of the companies implicated in a possible scandal that's rocked the billion dollar world of fantasy sports.

During an afternoon appearance on "Outside the Lines," ESPN anchor Bob Ley detailed how the company is adjusting its partnership with DraftKings.

"ESPN today continued running commercials for the two main daily sports fantasy companies, but has removed sponsored elements from within shows," Ley said.

A spokesperson for ESPN confirmed to CNNMoney that the channel has pulled DraftKings billboards and sponsorship out of news programming on Tuesday, adding that it is "standard procedure for us to pull these kind of sponsorships and integrations when we are covering significant news, to avoid any suggestion of influence on our coverage."

The spokesperson said that ESPN is evaluating the integration of DraftKings in its programming on a day-to-day basis.
And contrary to Ley's on-air statement that the commercials are still running on ESPN, the spokesperson said that DraftKings pulled its ads on the channel on Tuesday.

The decision comes a day after the New York Times reported that a DraftKings employee admitted to inadvertently releasing data prior to the slate of Week 3 NFL games, prompting claims that the employee may have used insider information to win a $350,000 prize at FanDuel.

That admission forced DraftKings and FanDuel, two of the biggest companies in fantasy sports, to defend their business practices. The two companies said that they have banned employees from playing fantasy games for money.
There's been no avoiding DraftKings ads on ESPN. The two sides completed a deal over the summer making DraftKings the official daily fantasy company of ESPN.

As a result of that deal, DraftKings was integrated across ESPN's programming. Matthew Berry, ESPN's senior fantasy analyst, even serves as a paid spokesman for DraftKings.
Last month, well before the insider trading scandal erupted, Berry was forced to defend this arrangement after he was inundated with criticism from readers.

Berry said that his integration of DraftKings changed little about what he had written and, above all else, he is a fan of the company he's paid to promote.

"I really enjoy playing daily fantasy and I really enjoy doing it on DraftKings," Berry wrote. "I'd recommend them anyway, so if they want to send me a check to do it? You bet. Where do I sign?"

ESPN is waiting for this "scandal" to blow over. Remember, disney bought a stake in draft kings earlier this year so we'll see those commericals again

My guess is it blows over but jeez...This industry is still in it's infancy, this isn't going to be the last hiccup.

Who knows what happens if there are 2 or 3 more. There may be a federal ban on all gambling forever.

Makes me think there's more to this story, and ESPN is getting ahead of it.

Annoying commercials every 30 seconds.. Misleading ads and bonus structures, guys in the industry winning hundreds of thousands of dollars and flaunting it..

People will react like this.

Just the overall arrogance from these two sites.. I think most people will say 'fuk these guys'...

You know I was thinking that DFS would be good for the legalization of sports betting.
But im starting to think that its possible that its bad.
DFS now has lobbyist now in Washington DC on their behalf.

Large Fortune 500 companies now have large stakes in these DFS companies.

So now that these DFS sites have lobbying and backing from large corporations I would imagine that these people might try to do everything in their power to stop legal sportsbetting because they will probably feel like it would be competition for the same dollar.

Am I completely off on this?

Yeah I think so. If sports betting doesn't become legal then you always have the "WHY IS THIS LEGAL BUT SPORTS BETTING ISNT!?!!?!"

I'm sure the sites would like to stop having to defend that position (since they know their answer isn't even good)

Better for them if a culture of legalization takes over.

There isn't.

You are just living in the most overreactionary, over polarized, over emotional time period in American history.

Guy from one site has an oops that proves he has access to info when he shouldn't, meanwhile big execs from each site are winning big money from each other's site. It's very suspicious.

Yeah the situation is what it is. Peter Gibbons pumps a ton of money into qualifiers, him winning a few seats really isn't all that surprising.

The sites don't like each other much, they're in a cold war for fantasy supremacy right now. Why would they let 1 another cheat to win $ off their site?

I don't think either one let or had any control or could prove what the other was doing. Maybe one suspected the other was doing it, so the other did it back.

I hope not though cause it will be black eye for legalization of sports betting too in the eye of the public, even though Vegas has shown how transparent it can be, and actually a big part in the fight against corruption.

Unfortunately this is probably the tip of the iceberg. New industries in their infancy have tons of stumbling blocks, controversy, kinks to work out, etc

With the spotlight shining brightly on DFS now, I could see more controversies becoming a problem but hopefully people will be a little more levelheaded about it.

Oh wait, nobody is levelheaded anymore about anything. Nevermind.
