This morning I was at work, in my office when the left part of my chest started to hurt. It felt like there was a thousand bricks on my chest. I'm a young dude (28), but a big dude and the first thing I thought was I was having a heart attack. As some of you know I work in a college as a financial aid adviser well I work with woman it is me and 8 other woman. Of course the first one I told about this panics and immediately calls HR and 911 which I understand. So the ambulance comes and I'm still feeling it pretty bad. They give me the standard procedures as we are driving to the hospital. 6 hours later and many tests later the doctor says there is nothing wrong with my heart internally and that perhaps I had a panic attack i.e. Tony Soprano. The question I have for all of you has anyone ever experienced this before, and if so was it recurring, and how similar was your emergency room experience. I ask because besides kidney stones I have never been in a hospital. It sure does freak me out.

Any prior experiences of emergency visits would be good as well. I got blood taken twice, x-rays taken from a portable x-ray machine, and a shot in the butt (no gay jokes please)

Also if you have any suggestions about relieving stress I would be most gracious. I can tell you I'm a big fellow and I need to get the weight off (6'2 305, ex football)

Thanks guys. Figured this would be a good place to post as I tried to help with the 70k debt guy in this forum.

i don't know. i smoke too much. i know i smoke too much. and yet probably the only thing that would make me quit is if i saw a picture of my lungs.

if you're overweight, and you know you're overweight, and you're this young and already worried about a possible heart attack...either do something about it starting now or forget about it.

i like to eat. it is a pleasure. i would hate to lose the pleasure of a t-bone steak because i'm thinking of a heart attack while i eat it. if that was the case, i'd just eat vegetables.

The first thing you should have received was an EKG if you told them you were having pressure on the left side of your chest.

Never experienced what you have, but strongly suggest you start walking or exercising, if you aren't already and start to drop some weight.

There was guy who you used to do the drawing for the Ohio Lottery when I was a kid (for some reason I remember this), he died at the age of 29 from a heart attack. Was overweight. Not trying to scare you, just trying to encourage some change.

yeah. sometimes we do things that we know can kill us. we do it any ways because we are young. then our bodies start showing some kind of symptom that we relate to out lifestyle.

the bitch of it is, we start worrying about what we are doing that might be the cause of the symptoms, that the stress of our worry might kill us long before the actual activity. if you are worried about being overweight, make an effort to lose it. you will feel better, both mentally and physically. either that or just say fuck it and do what you do.

but don't agonize over it. that's just gonna lead to more problems.

The first thing you should have received was an EKG if you told them you were having pressure on the left side of your chest.

They did an EKG right away. My heart rate at the time of the medics getting there was 190/132.

Other comments:

I'm definitely concerned about the weight and that is a priority but my stress levels at work are beyond the roof right now and I'm guessing that led to a lot of this. Currently I'm doing my job and two other peoples (boss and co-worker both quit). So with stress and the weight it seems like it may be a ticking time bomb if I don't do something about it.

I need to change a lot of things in my life and relax at the same time. Which is weird because I'm such a laid back, relaxed dude in my private life but professionally I am/have been very uptight.

With your blood pressure that high, you should be on medication. That level is extremely dangerous and with you being about 100 pounds overweight, you are a walking time bomb. If you are not on blood pressure medication, you better see a doctor immediately and be tested for your level of cholesterol and blood sugar. FYI, a normal blood pressure is 120/80.

I've taking a few medical classes before I changed majors. My girlfriend is also in med school. Your blood pressure is high because your overweight and out of shape so your heart is not used to intensity. You were also scared and in a panic state(not saying a panic attack) which also raises your blood pressure and your heart rate. You could have a hernia in your stomach from being out of shape, could be your gallbladder. Either way. Start eating right and walking man.. you dont wanna be diabetic or die by the time your 35.

Let me get this straight. You went to the doctor because your chest was in pain. The doctor says you have a psychological condition?

I am not a doctor, obviously, but that doesn't make much sense. That's like going to the psychologist for anxiety and he says you have heart disease.

Whether it's a panic attack or not you need to get that weight down. The potential for heart attack and diabetes is really high.

If you don't lose the weight you WILL have one or the other. Then you will be forced to reduce in order to survive.

Diabetes is no walk in the park - you have to change your whole lifestyle [no drinking, etc] and will probably die early.

The stress will probably take care of itself if they are hiring the two people to replace those that left. If they are not going to hire, then I would consider getting another job, if possible. Stress isn't too bad if you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. If it is ongoing then it can be really bad.

Same thing happened to my dad. He went to the ER had all the tests, thay cleared him and gave him the standard, "its a panic attack." and sent him home. Dad died of a massive heart attack the next day. His BP was high but not as freekishly high as yours 190/130??? You sure your not dead? Try pulling a finger off, If it comes off, you're a Zombie.

Seriously, God just gave you pass. Get the fucking weight off and get some BP meds.

Good Luck

The doctor took x-rays and blood work in the ER room and said that it was nothing physically wrong with me and most likely it was a panic attack then referred me to some doctors to speak to about this.

The 190/132 was right when the medics got to my office at the height of the situation. After I was settled in the ER it gradually feel down to standard levels.

Your right this is definitely something I have to address immediately or I will die if I do not change the way I'm living.l The weird thing is that my ability to handle stress has always been spot on but now its so much more stress then I've ever carried before and I just can't do it (the job that is).

The blood work you had in the Emergency Room is without fasting. You must have blood work taken after 12 hours of fasting in order to get information on you cholesterol and glucose levels. The doctor's comments to you about the lab work you had is more related to blood cell levels and counts, etc. Lab tests taken in the Emergency Room are not tested for cholesterol or glucose. Get to your doctor and have the proper blood work done. I can tell you that was not a panic attack by your description of what you felt as a heavy weight on the left side of your chest.

One time I was having heart burn and the tums were not working.

So my wife called got me an appointment on my day off.

Didn't get my regular doctor and this nurse did an ekg and the doctor started freaking out said I had to go to ER 20 miles north and said go to pharmacy and get nitro.

I knew I didn't have blockage as I know that means fatigue.

Go to ER and spent my whole fucking day off and they prescribed me prolisac and I was fine.

Fucking doctor and nurse, imagine what that cost my insurance company.

Just think if I didn't have insurance much less thank goodness we have dual insurance.

Then they had me take a stress test weeks later.........mo money

FYI I still have the nitro I keep in my lunch pale.

Does anyone know how long it is good for?

get every test you can. your health is nothing to mess around with...not to mention gambling is a stressor in itself lol. make sure you test for diabetes, cholesterol, etc. get your weight down, get your cv into shape. i have diabetes, and let me tell you - you do not want it. it is a miserable disease.
