The Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics are the first known teams to secure face-to-face recruiting meetings with free-agent big man Dwight Howard, according to league sources.
Sources told ESPN that Howard, 30, is likely to meet with as many as five teams in free agency, with a return to the Houston Rockets widely seen as unlikely after Howard declined his $23.2 million player option for next season.

At the right price I would take him. Not many good Centers out there these days. It seems the rules are against their style. Physical play is a no-no. Big men need to be more athletic and versatile to be effective. Defense & Rebounds are all hustle plays and that was his specialty, his lack of effort was really obvious in that area the last few seasons. Considering he just got done playing with what many consider the 2 biggest ball hogs out there (Kobe & Harden) It will be interesting to see what he does on a new team.

Cancers thrive on losing teams. And a good coach can keep those types of guys in check. If it doesn't work, just release him. But I would roll the dice with Howard. As good as Cousins and Rondo are, those guys seem to be a bigger gamble. Sac is doomed.

Dwight Howard, Hawks agree on 3-year, $70.5 million deal


It remains unknown whether Howard will play with Al Horford or replace him.

Combined with Atlanta's agreement with Kent Bazemore on a four-year deal worth $70 million Friday, the Hawks have nearly exhausted their available salary-cap space, while All-Star free agent and nine-year team veteran Horford has yet to pick a team.

However, the Hawks were engaged in trade talks Friday that potentially would allow them to open more cap space in the event Horford decided to re-sign. Horford is one of the most coveted free agents on the market, with several teams interested in him, including the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards.

The Hawks have yet to offer the full five-year max to Horford, a source said.


Horford met with the Celtics, Rockets, Wizards and an unknown team Friday in Atlanta and expects to make a decision this weekend, sources said.

Howard returns to his hometown after three seasons in Houston, where he battled injuries and wasn't the force he was earlier in his career. He managed just 13.7 points per game last season, the fewest since he averaged 12 as a rookie for Orlando after being taken with the No. 1 selection in the 2004 draft out of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy.

If Horford leaves, the Hawks would need Howard, 30, to play better than he did in Houston. After averaging 18.3 points in his first season, he tailed off to 15.8 while missing half of the 2014-15 season, before dropping off further last season while the Rockets barely made the playoffs.

Even if his offense isn't there, Howard can at times be a dominant rebounder and shot-blocker, although not quite at the level that won him three straight defensive player of the year awards from 2009 to 2011.

Sorry, I mispoke, He has heart. Howard, none. He's in it for the money and money only. Howard is good enough to take you to the playoffs but he won't care to get you the trophy.

When will Howard actually show that he cares to win? Wade, Lebron, Kobe, "the whole Spurs team", Golden State, all cared. Howard, what a joke.

Rumors were when he was given the chance to work with The Dream to develop an offensive post game he responded with his offense didn't need help lol Howard is definitely a guy who could have been dominate for a lot longer than just a few year,s if he had wanted to be. Probably just enjoyed the money too much to keep working hard. He was still 4th in rebounds last season but defensively and offensively wasn't much.
It seems more and more Pros are relying solely on their athleticism to get by. Which is why they don't last long in the league or they fall fast from that All Star level of play after a few short years. Besides Howard, Steve Francis comes to mind. But guys like Kobe, Vince Carter who are athletic but also have the fundamentals down can still last 15 years or more. Howard will probably be done once this contract is up. I think Westbrook will have a fast fall off in his career. His game is 100% his athleticism.
