Dumb question for legal guys. (or ex-cons)

When someone is arrested and released on bond, for say a 25K bond ..

Does the accused pay 25K?
Or is this like a treasury bond where you pay 12.5K?

The BHB Panama bond got me thinking.

10% lander if you get a bails bondsmen my brotherin law about 7 yrs ago had to put up 10,000 of a 100K bond

Keep in mind that nothing says that the Panama "security" bond is handled in the same way as a US criminal bond.

You only pay 10%. Once you show up in court the matter is resolved and no more money is owed.

If you don't show then the guy who bonded you out is on the hook for the entire amount. At least until he can catch you.

Bob Sparks is correct...............

except he left out the part about a "cash" bond

if you post a "cash" or "sheriffs" bond you get the amount you posted back (some jurisdications charge 10%) back when you appear in court.........

all other types of bonds are non-refundable.....

Lander:

The 10% is the bondsmans usual fee.

IF you show up in court, the bondsman gets the back full bond (money) he posted up with the court.

The bondsman is betting that you will show up, or he gets stuck for the full bail amount.

One has the option of putting up the full amount of the bond, directly with the court and bypass a bondsman.

Going to a bondsman, entirely depends on your economic resources.

Hypothetically, let's say you skip out on the court date. Are the bondmen the type that will hunt you down and beat the ever-living crap out of you? or are they more of the nerdy investor type?

So far, nobody has mentioned this crucial fact:The bail bondsman will insist on collateral for putting up the dough.

Exilarch: collateral is only required if there is substantial risk involved. In most cases a co-signer is all that's needed. I have written bonds over 50k with no collateral taken and have also written 2k bonds with a mortgage as collateral.

My friend is a Fugitve Recovery Agent. He has more authority than any state policeman. he can kick your door in and come to get your azz. He dont need no warrant and he most likely will notify law enforcement of his intentions before moving in.
