Be glad that you didn't hurt or kill someone else. Or that you didn't get arrested and have to go through the troubles that brings.
The sad thing is, if you hadn't gotten in an accident, you likely would have continued to do the same thing as if nothing happened.
Hopefully, others will learn from your story.

Drinking and driving offenses should include severe penalty. Time served for 1st offense.

I've been involved in a traffic accident while under the influence. The car was completerly totalled. I still have a pretty gnarly scar on my forehead.

Glad to say that I've mostly avoided drinking and driving since then.

Is everyone aware that more accidents are caused by people driving while on a cell phone than driving under the influence? Yet the cell phone is not illegal.

I think drinking and driving is wrong, but it's already a life-changer unless you're well off. Your life will never recover and be the same after a DUI, unless you have a lot of money. Maybe we should have public beheadings for drunk drivers. Let's lower the limit to 0.1%.

Believe me. I'm against drunk driving, but I don't like the USA mentality of making everything illegal and then making the penalties stronger and stronger.

The USA has the highest per capita rate of people in prison of any country in the world.

Bill collector-glad you're alive

However I have to say driving after even one drink is really stupid. I think DUI offenders should be punished to the max. Two of my three kids have gotten DUI's and both got off way to easy.

A friend of mine just got a dui and got charged with manslaughter after 2 people were killed when he was driving. He is paralyzed and now has to go to court to face the manslaughter charge. Most of us have done it, and we are all morons for not getting a taxi.

Take cabs in Vegas. Most you will pay is 20. I know lots of drinking will take place during bash. You can walk to lots of places downtown so no need for any rides.

the police came shortly after the accident..thank god a man happened to be driving by the crash and called the cops..i was taken to the hospital and when I cme out of 4.5 hours of surgery I was served my papers for court..If that man who found me hadn't I would have probably dies from loss of blood inside my legs..no open wounds but blood loss internally..no seat belt and i was ejected from the car through driver side window which was down..no other injuries except for broken femurs..talk about soemthing/someone looking out for me !!

That's quite an accident billcollector. You're a pretty lucky bastard - or should I say unlucky. Well.. enjoy your down time.

On the sub topic .. IMO A first DUI doesn't warrant the maximum penatly. Unless the offender is unfortunate enough to get into an accident and hurt someone other than himself. Simply having a DUI on your record is punishment enough.

dui laws are bullshit, i recently got one and they are treating me like a hardcore criminal, lets not forget 1st dui offense is a misdameaner(spelled wrong i am sure), .09 was my bac, and i went to jail, paid 2500 in fines 12 weeks of classes , insurance more than doubled and can't go to my mom's house cause she runs a daycare, they sent her a letter saying she has to tell all the parents first of my criminal record in order for me to go over there, ridiculous.every study shows that 99.9% of accidents are caused by sober people, that includes fatal accidents, yet they this bs law and the horseshit .08 limit continues. limit needs to be .10 or even a little higher, .08 is two beers and the cops are ruining peoples lives over it.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/7051052/Speeding-driver-stopped-with-kids-wine

A speeding driver more than double the legal alcohol limit was stopped by police with two toddlers in her car and a sports bottle filled with wine.

The driver was stopped at 4pm yesterday on State Highway 1, north of Foxton, for travelling at 118 kmh on the open road.

"As the police officer approached the driver, a 45-year-old woman from Lower Hutt, it was apparent...(she) had consumed alcohol," said Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery, officer in charge of the Central District Highway patrol.

Police said the driver told them she had been drinking since 11.30am that morning.

"Present in the vehicle was a sports drink bottle containing wine, which it appears that the driver was drinking from during her journey. The added concern was that in the vehicle at the time were two small children both under four years of age, and that this driver had travelled from Taranaki and was heading to Lower Hutt."

Burbery said the circumstances were "a tragedy waiting to happen".

"This was a wet and dark night.... I am of the opinion that my highway patrol officer possibly prevented a serious crash and saved someone be it the driver, the innocent children in the vehicle or some other road user from serious injury or death."

"Given the tragic events of the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend this is again an example of a small minority of drivers who continue to drive after consuming alcohol who do not appreciate the risks they are putting everyone at when they drive after (or while) consuming alcohol.

The women will appear in the Levin District Court later this month, on a drink-driving charge.

Police have referred the matter to Child, Youth and Family.

Boys, I can't stress enough how you need to figure out a different way to get home than driving drunk.

Had an extended family member kill a couple over Memorial day weekend. He was from a good family and just made a very bad mistake. He had a kid and now is going to spend a long time in prison. Not only did he take the lives of two people who didn't deserve to die, but he messed up his life and his kids.

This past weekend I was headed out to the lake to eat a nice dinner with my wife and her parents and we pulled up on a wreck that just happened. My father in law is a doctor and he hopped out to help. Beer cans all over the side of road and empty beer boxes. The kid driving the car was only 16 and was drunk. I don't know if he pulled through or not but he was air lifted to the hospital and it didn't look good.

Next time you decide to drink and drive just think about all people involved if you were to cause somebody to get hurt or possible killed.
