Why can't he be a casino host in LV, or sell his image to SIA. or something ?

If George Foreman can do Meineke, why can't Dr. J get a gig ?

Never huge on memorabilia. I would sell it even if I didn't need the money.

But it sad to see players in this situation especially ones you admire growing up. He must be hurting because since he played in 11 nba season and he maxxed out the pension for NBA. The pay is $195K per year which is lot of money. He must have real gambling problem if that is not enough to sustain him.

DR J is like Einstein compared to modern players like say Latrell Sprewell.

Jordan did it right, few others did.

No man making 10 million a year....or 10 million lifetime should ever be broke.

You can blow big money only a few ways....

gambling it away at horrible -EV has to be the worst way !

Drugs and hos....aka Sheening it is better

I don't know what you call buying mansions, cars, planes, yhacts, etc.

I'd live it up big time if I got my paws on 500 million, but actually 10 million would be enough.....cue the sound of a balloon deflating

500 M is so large that I'd give 80% of it way without a se2cond thought, screw it 90% to charity.

Couldn't a guy like this at least find some way to make an easy 100k a year doing something ?

I know 100k is nothing to most here, but 100k to promote Cheesesteaks for a restaurant in Philly or something should be easy work for some ads and guest appearances, autograph signings.

I don't recall him getting in any real legal issues ? A lot of dudes here have seen him in casinos, I believe them, too ! How did he last this long ?

He can still make some money off of his fame,,,shit somebody in Philly would pay him 20k to attend their birthday party, stag, wedding, etc.

I once read Larry Hagman ( Dallas, I dream of Jeannie) would go to your party for 50k.

Julius can still muster up a few hundred k quick with appearances and such, esp. around Philly.

He must fancy himself a golfer, I'm sure he could get paid to golf with older fans....even if shoots 95.

He's like a top ten player of the last 40 years, he can still get paid to appear at various functions.

No doubt about this. Dr J has passed the "famous" threshold to the point where he will never be totally broke. He will always be able to make at least a couple hundred thousand bucks a year just with his name.. He was that great, super famous. It's the less famous athletes that have it the worst, guys like Antoine Walker and Sprewell who were all stars and plenty famous but not super famous. On the flip guys, like Tyson and Dr J despite being in bad shape financially and maybe even having a negative net worth will never be "broke"

My favorite memory of Dr. J was watching the Portland TrailBlazers kick the crap out of him and his fellow "all-star" sixers in the '77 NBA championships after the sixers had won the first two games of the series. My second favorite memory of him was him winning the NBA championship 3 or 4 years later.

But one thing I'll never do is feel sorry any multi-millionaire who threw it all away.

How about Larry Legend making J cry.

This story has taken an odd turn . . .Dr. J denies memorabilia auction tied to lawsuit

PHILADELPHIA (AP)

Julius Erving has denied an upcoming auction of his personal basketball memorabilia collection is tied to a lawsuit filed against him by a Georgia bank.
Not true, he said. ''That irony actually gave me a sleepless night last night,'' he said. ''I had to laugh at it and cringe at it that these stories would run concurrent with one another.''

''My family is 100 percent behind it,'' he said. ''We decided to do it a long time ago. To claim it's a firesale or to clear up some debt, I don't think so. You don't do an auction overnight. This has been long planned. We had 4,000 catalogs that have been mailed already to people who buy this kind of stuff.''

Pretty odd place for a black celebrity to choose to live. It's only about 100 miles from Vegas, so I'm sure he'd go there over Mesquite.

Obviously he is selling his stuff because cash means more to him now, and he started to see this need coming maybe a year ago. He doesn't care about the stuff, then why keep it for decades ?

The miracle is that he lasted as long as he did before going broke.

Who builds a $2M place in St. George's, UT?

I've been there, it is a very small town. I'd feel weird as a gambler living in such a Morman town and being the tallest person in town and the only black guy pretty much in town, if not the state.....barring the Jazz.

why does so much of this not make any sense ? But Ladeda you make some sense. But people don't really talk about "DR.J" like they used to, so I don't really buy into what you are saying.

I actually looked at a lot of this stuff over the summer. It was on display at the National Sports Convention in Chicago. It was like a damn museum.

At any rate, Dr. J. must be a real degenerate based on the amount of sightings of him at casinos all over the place. Really sad, but back in the day he was pulling in a million a year when that was huge money. Even back in the ABA days, he had to have been one of the highest paid athletes. He was just recently in a Dr. Pepper commercial too.

Didn't his son die in a car wreck a few years back? Maybe that's caused some of these issues. At any rate, you'd think he could sign his name all day long for 50 bucks or more a pop. Look at Pete Rose - I'd be willing to bet that he's made more money over the years signing his name then he ever did playing.
