this is more discussion on the pilot cat thread about quitting betting.
i don't know if he was serious, he sounded serious. angry, frustrated at another losing nfl weekend. he said he was going to quit, i said smart move, its a losers game to begin with and you don't need the headaches. i want to elaborate a bit on that.
the gamblers mindset is to rationalize any negative happenings and say hey i'll get em back the next day. i was like that, i myself used to be a college basketball guy, i went on a huge roll all posted on the forum, up over 10k, all documented, then lost 4k in one night. then it hit me like pilot_cat. i'm wasting time, i should've quit when i was up 10k, this is becoming too big of a part of my life, let it go. i rationalized to myself saying your done, and i came back anyways, brought that 6k back up over 11k all documented here and then came march madness. i lost 3k of that 11 and ended up back at 8k. Thankfully the season ended so I wouldn't do more damage. I came back next year, throwing away my rationale lost about 1.5k and fell to about 6.5k. quit in early midseason. i then swore to myself to give it up for good. i forced it out of my life. i blocked the sportsbooks, cashed out my money, and said goodbye for good.
now im glad to say 1.5 years later its all flushed out of my system. the only gambling i do now are 2 fantasy football money leagues on cbs and im satisfied with that.
as for me posting this on a gambling forum, the forum for me at least is a general discussion forum, where i now spend about 90 percent of my time in the political forum, and about 10 percent of the time in the main forum. i am largely absent from the sports forums that I post this thread in now. just because i post on a gambling forum, doesn't mean I'm a gambler if you follow me.
thats the fundamental gambling problem, the mindset. you continually rationalize that you can make money at a game built for you to lose, so you go on and on and on, thats why 99 percent of you, like myself, don't belong in this. no matter how much you kid yourself and say i'll never let it get out of control, the mindset is not built to rationalize that way.
look at miamiboy86, the kid has come back and left 10 times. he's admitted he has over 20k debt from gambling. says he wants to quit and comes back, because he can't rationalize why he can't win at this game, when the game is made for him to lose to begin with, so he struggles onto the next day, a popular phrase on this forum.
here's the basic advice:
-only gamble if you have the money to gamble. a biggie that people forget about on this forum.
-don't rationalize. if your sick of it, like pilot_cat, take steps to get out. disconnect your computer, block sites, etc. don't say i'll get em back tomorrow.
-get out while you can. it took me 3 times to finally get out, but i got out. don't let it consume your life(there was a post on this forum about someone on here playing for 16 straight hours in front of the computer, those late night degenerate plays the forum is famous for.)
-if you hate losing, if you don't gamble, you don't lose, duh. and in todays industry, it looks like you have double the risk. 50 percent that you win, 50 percent that you get paid.
-this whole mindset that i saw in that thread saying were all degenerates and can't quit, you'll be back next week is really sad. no will leads you to the brink. you shouldn't be that submissive.
