....unless you have the original disk! I just did thinking I always want to download any updates from Windows. But there must be some sort of glitch in the software because after the update, you get a message that Windows can't open since the file inf/bios/info is missing. You need to install your XP disk to get the PC to work! Takes almost an hour to reinstall or repair! Waste of my time.

Anyone else have this problem?

What update are you talking about?

service pack 3?

No problems here, nothing a reboot wouldn't solve

Ouch. I haven't heard of this issue, but I have seen rare(very) cases when an update will uncover some other problem that will end up crashing the OS.

I never install updates, dont realize the difference either way

Biggamer, from a security standpoint, this is a really, really bad idea. Microsoft critical updates at security updates to fix vulnerabilities that have been found. Shortly after Microsoft releases the patches, there is enough info out there for people to start going after unpatched machines.

You're more or less just asking to get your machine hacked.

I think what may have happened is when u do these updates Microsoft checks to see if u have a legal version of the software running..If it doesnt think that it is legal it will tell u to reinstall ur software. This doesnt mean u had pirated software just that on this occasion it didnt detect whatever it is it looks for that tells them its an official version..

Could have nothing to do with it but i have run into this before...

I used my XP disc and used the repair option. Problem now is the same thing when I originally installed XP, I lost my sound. I know it's a driver problem, but I have to find the site I went to before that gave me the right info to fix the problem. It's a C-Media 97 driver, but for whatever reason, if you download a SIS 7012 driver, it fixes the problem.

What's with this Driver Detective? Is it worthwhile to fix your drivers?

I wouldn't sweat it-if this update caused widespread crashes, Microsoft would have pulled it by now.

Stuck most likely got really unlucky, or had some other underlying problem that caused it. It happens.

This sometimes happens...this can be for many reasons..sometimes when windows updates the driver for a device can be lost or deleted...also sometimes the update fails and this causes an important start up file to be deleted. When I installed Vista SP1 on my desktop the installation failed and had to return my system to its last good configuration... To do this you must keep pressing F8 when you boot up your system. This will make the computer come to a screen with a bunch of options. Don't be frightened by all the white text. Click on the "Last Good Configuration" option and click enter. That always works for me.
