The Miami Dolphins were preparing to fire head coach Joe Philbin as of Sunday night, league sources tell ESPN.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross could always change his mind, but the organization was preparing to make a move as soon as Monday, the sources said.

If Ross follows through and fires Philbin, Dolphins tight ends coach Dan Campbell would be the leading candidate to become the interim head coach and replace Philbin.

Philbin met with Ross on Sunday in London after a 27-14 loss to the New York Jets dropped Miami to 1-3 this season, and said afterward that he was confident in his job security.

Philbin, 24-28 in Miami since taking over in 2012.

ESPN.com's James Walker contributed to this report.

Dreams do get answered!

Curious about the qb situation. Team is tied to Tannehill for at least 1 more season. Either way he will play out as a lame duck like average Joe.

I hope Tannehill can be successful on the dolphins. I like him and he's hard not too like. Hoping we can get an o-line that can block (amongst other things)

tannehill is an average QB who can manage the game but never take them to the next step. Funny thing is he was almost benched last season and the next thing you know he gets a big extension in the offseason.

I feel like I've heard "Dolphins got so much talent!" like 20x this weekend.

Where? Their best receiver is a possession slot guy. Outside guys are below avg. RB is avg. OL was good last year but not an elite unit.

Defense, Grimes had a great year at CB last year but he is 32 years old. Tough to repeat that performance at that age.

Front 7 is good with Suh/Wake but Wake has been banged up.

I mean they have some talent but this is hardly the '07 Patriots here. I'd say both the Jets and Buffalo have more talent 1 to 53 than them.

Not sure if anyone ever compared their talent to the 07 pats or the 72 fins (the ONLY undefeated team ever).

Tannehill threw for over 4k yards last season. Coming into the season, he was the 2nd best qb in the division. Lamar Miller ran for over 1k yds last yr. Jarvis Landry had over 80 catches last yr as a rookie. They drafted a stud rookie wr in the 1st rd this yr as well. Brandon Albert is a really good left tackle (when healthy). Pouncey is a pro bowl center. Juwan James had a good yr last yr as a rookie RT.

Coming into this season, they had a top 5 DL (jets and buff are in this top 5 as well). Grimes is a stud cb and Reshad Jones is really good.

The team is banged up and something isnt clicking. The o-line cant hold blocks and they have underachieved big time.

Watch them win their next 5 out of 7 to go 6-5. Only to poop the bed in the final 5 games to once again miss the playoffs but somehow secure the #16 pick in the draft.

Typical dolphins

Ryan tannehill sucks.. Any analytic number or stat says otherwise should be rendered useless.

Landry is a good player but if he is your best WR then you are hardly loaded on offense. That would be like Wes Welker being the best player in an offense. He is a good slot receiver and I'm not trying to slot-shame him but if he is your best skill position player that probably means you don't have a lot of weapons.

Miller had a nice year last year but I don't think he is good enough to get 280-350 touches a season, surprised they didn't bring anyone in to compete with him. Maybe they thought Ajayi was gonna be that guy but then he broke his ribs.

Agree on the OL, that was the strength of their team. Guessing some of their struggles just have to do with playing 3 top level defensive lines so far (Skins, Bills, Jets) Even Jacksonville has stopped the run well in most of their games.
