D'oh! Caterpillar CEO Contradicts President on Whether Stimulus Will Allow Him to Re-Hire Laid Off Workers

February 12, 2009 6:16 PM
<!-- Tahman Bradley
-->EAST PEORIA, ILL. -- President Obama today repeated the claim we asked about yesterday at the press briefing that Jim Owens, the CEO of Caterpillar, Inc., "said that if Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off."
Caterpillar announced 22,000 layoffs last month.
But after the president left the event, Owens said the exact opposite.
Asked if the stimulus package would be able to stop the 22,000 layoffs or not, Owens said, "I think realistically no. The truth is we're going to have more layoffs before we start hiring again"
"It is going to take some time before that stimulus bill" means re-hiring, he said.

Yes I am happy that your messiah, obama, is making an ass of himself daily. You gotta love it.:):)

BO is slowly but surely becoming a joke played on gullible utopian thinkers. Humpty Dumpty hasn't had his great fall yet but the signs are there.

Why can you people never see anything objectively?
This is another excerpt from the same article:
Owens also cautioned that even if a stimulus is passed within the next month, the effects will not be immediate and are more likely to impact construction activity at the end of 2009 or spring 2010.
"As these projects kick in, one concern I have that we need to be mindful of, is that even if this stimulus package passes, not only here but around the world, it still takes a little time to bid the contracts and get the dirt work started," said Owens

So the new jobs will not come immediately, it may take a year. Is that a reason to trash the stimulus package and call Obama a liar?

I'm not in a position to really judge whether the stimulus bill is good and necessary but I do see that most of the arguments in this forum that are against it simply are not thought through.

Spring of 2010 is over a year away. Obama is talking about a catastrophe...his words.

Heading off a catastrophe with actions that will take at least a year?

Are you sure you are thinking this through Preussen?

Tax cuts would inject money into the system immediately.

Fighting a catastrophe should be done slowly? :think2:

You're in Germany. What purpose does it serve for America to operate military bases there?

MJ, I expressly said I won't judge whether the stimulus package is a good thing or not. But what makes you think tax cuts would save/create jobs more quickly? For example, how exactly would tax cuts lead to Caterpillar re-hiring workers sooner?

I don't know, but I guess it's because those bases are closer to some current or potential crisis regions than America itself. But why do you ask?

Because I've never been to Germany, and can't for the life of me figure why the US military is over there, or what they're defending.

What else do you know about Jim Owens, Mr. Objectivity? Anything else the group might find interesting about Obama and Caterpiller or is this where you think it ends?

They are not defending anything in Germany, at least not in the last twenty years. As far as I can see they use the bases only for training and as a stepping stone to other areas.

Bilbal, your general 'I'm cleverer than you all' attitude is pretty pathetic as you never say anything relevant, or if you do it's easily refuted. I even have to score your last discussion with Sweetlou as a minor loss for you and that means a lot.
Say something sensible, back it up if necessary, and everything will be alright. But until you do I will continue to stand by the conclusion I reached after the earlier futile attempts to get you to make a proper argument - it's best to ignore you as much as possible.

My questions were sensible, your reaction was expected.

My questions were sensible...

Yes, sure.
If you think you know anything then just say it and let people discuss it. These hints just make you look like a fool if you don't elaborate on them.

Maybe I would like to give the braintrust a chance to see what their Google and Stupidepia searches turn up.
