I need something preferably that I could dig up out of my yard or pick off a tree or bush...I want to save money and I have no prescription drug benefit...

TIA

It took some time but getting (1)out of the house and just killing time outside and (2) making new or hanging out with different friends was part of the solution.

A few winners. Books dropping by the house with envelopes usually picks me right up.

I've heard St. John's Wort but who knows if that actually works.

SJW is for many people a very effective response to many forms of mental depression. I've used it with success in the past, though not for about eight years since I adopted more healthy habits of thinking in general.

Many of the suggestions have been very good...get more exercise, get outside in the sunshine, improve your diet, expand your circle of friends, pick up a new hobby, avoid the drugs and alcohol (they are NOT helping you, I promise).

But if you need medication, there are generics for several of the SSRI's currently on the market...Prozac and Paxil come immediately to mind.

Check to see if any of them are on either the Wal-Mart $4.00 list or the Publix's free list...

Hope this helps...

I have a number of patients who swear by SJW...and my position is if it's working for you, go for it...

However, a NIH-funded study shows that an extract of the herb St. John's wort was no more effective for treating major depression of moderate severity than placebo. http://nccam.nih.gov/research/results/stjohnswort/

I've tried St. John's Wort and it did nothing but then again I never gave it the full six weeks that you're supposed to give it.
