ASHBURN, Va. -- After further tests, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has not been cleared to play Saturday night against the Baltimore Ravens, casting doubt into his availability for the season opener in two weeks.

Griffin suffered concussion-like symptoms in an Aug. 20 preseason game against the Detroit Lions, but practiced all week and was initially cleared by independent neurologist Robert N. Kurtzke.

However, the team reversed course Friday.

In a statement released by the team, Kurtzke said, "Per discussion with Neuropsychologists and with Anthony Casolaro M.D., we had anticipated yesterday that the patient would be cleared for full participation in gameplay this weekend; however, upon further scrutiny today of the neuropsychology data, I agree with the neuropsychologist that he should be held from gameplay this weekend and be retested in one-two weeks before a firm conclusion to return to gameplay can be made."

It was unclear even Thursday whether Griffin had indeed suffered a concussion. He could not point to which play it might have happened -- or if it had occurred on the final play of his night, when a Lions player fell on him.

The Redskins called it a concussion after the game, but Griffin declined to confirm that he indeed had one, saying: "You have to talk to the people who report that stuff." Still, he practiced throughout the week and sounded a note of caution in his news conference Thursday.

"I feel good, just trying to take care of everything and be as cautious as possible," he said. "It's not about anything but my family and them caring for me and my well-being. My teammates care about me and are asking about me every day. I'll just follow the protocol and see what happens."

Griffin tweeted Friday night after the Redskins' announcement that he must sit.

The move opens the door to a possible quarterback change to open the regular season.

Kirk Cousins likely will start Saturday night against Baltimore. If Griffin isn't cleared, or if Cousins has another strong outing, then Cousins could end up starting the season opener against the Miami Dolphins.

He doesn't understand why things happen? What a moron.

Try this.

1. Progressions
2. Pocket passer
3. Learn how to take a hit and fall correctly
4. Don't mess with commercials( you suck)

You are the reason Jay Gruden wil get another chance as a head coach. What was Shanahan thinking

Remember when at the end of the 1st year in the playoffs..... it was argued RG3 is better than Wilson?

People are still jacked up on Wilson, but I bet you if Wilson had been drafted by the Skins and RG3 was drafted by the Hawks..... the Skins would still suck and the Seahawks would still be a great team.

Carroll made and makes that team. Wilson was at the right place at the right time... and had he been drafted by the Skins.... no doubt the Skins owner would've destroyed Wilson's career and Wilson would just be a footnote....

If you don't think russell wilson has an NFL mind then you're an idiot

That's like saying if Brady went to the Jags instead of Belichicks Pats, he would suck......it could be true......I've always wondered how many super bowls Marino would have won under a 49ers or Dallas franchise when they were winning.

Also, Brady like Wilson were at the right place at the right time, like hitting the lottery......BUT, in the NFL, you gotta also have qb smarts.

RG3 doesn't have NFL smarts, fee qbs have that intelligence & they ellvatite to a "perfect" level on a good team making that team great, hence the super bowl rings........RG3 will never be that qb unfortunately.

RG 3 sucks. His "great rookie season" was so overated. The media will take an average black qb and build him up.

as a person who tries to root for the Redskins, Snyder and the rest make it awfully difficult. It's past time to move on from RG3. He won't make it two weeks from whenever he comes back. They have no O line and one more huge hit or sack will end his season.

This whole black mobile qb crap needs to stop.

Pretty simple, you devise your offense around a running qb, they will get hurt. The blueprint is there. Be 6'4' or 6'5", smart, accurate, white... That alone will put your team in the playoffs.

This is his last season in Washington. Back up this year and the next 2 years then out of the league as Vlad predicts. Who would have thought? A stupid black injury prone qb. Never have seen one of those before.

Cam Newton is due this year.

I don't know if its these billionaire owners trying to be politically correct, or be very stupid & selecting a qb that has absolutely no pocket presence & likes to run around going off his college football career that will transform into nothingness in the NFL......

Snyder IMO is one of the worst owners I have ever seen when it comes to making those decisions.

If I was RG3 I would be running with the ball every time and sliding head first, I want that 16mil payday next season and I get it if I have a long term injury.

Some people thought he would revolutionize the game. After his first year majority thought he was on his way to greatness. Using his legs as a crutch he was an electrifying athlete with one of prettiest deep balls ever seen. Lack of awareness, takes terrible hits and looks like a rag doll out there. Lacks understanding of basic football concepts.

They say that about every one of them. Vick was going to revolutionize the game as well. I may miss a couple but Brady, Peyton, Rodgers, Luck, Brees even going down to Eli, Stafford. Notice they all have the same traits except Brees but he played college football here so it is OK.
