Do you think society accepts sportsbetting as a skill anymore today than 10 years ago

I have been in situations the past year trying to explain what I do to others and I still get a look like I am a degenerate gambler. I don't think one person that I have tried to explain this too totally believes me and how well I have did. I now have all but given up trying to justify what I am doing with sports wagering.

The funny thing is since I started looking into this possibile poker venture I have totally different looks and responses by almost all. I honestly think poker is accepeted by mainstream America as being okay and a skill but I am willing to bet (no pun intended) 99.9999% of Americans look at sportsbetting as a losing game.

Even though poker has done an excellent job changing it's image, sportsbetting has picked up 0% in the credibility category with others (IMO) in the past 10 years or so. I don't think there is any hope in the near future either and that will always be (IMO) the main reason that wagering on sports will never be legalized in the USA and poker will.

No. Never will. When people think of sports betting they think of the mob. Simple as that.

Exactly. You cannot explain to others for we are not accepted and probably never will be. i have tried with people even close to me, friends even and they just do not get it. I have learned first hand and have given up...if the situation arises, at this point I will avoid the conversation more often than not.

It's a lonely existence. The thing we're probably all most passionate, and we don't bring it up (except here, of course)

Poker you play and win based on how you do... Sports you watch and win based on how others do...

Somehow my dad found about how well I was doing from a friend, so around Christmas I decided to sit him and my mom down and explain best to them (who have zero idea what I was talking about). After an hour I left and felt maybe they understood. Well about a month goes by and my mom says my dad comes home at least twice a week and makes little snide comments about how I have a problem and is really worried about me.

The worst part is I feel almost stupid trying to explain to others as I can imagine what they are thinking. My live in GF and I are moving into a home almost twice the size and money as the one we live in now and one of the main reasons is because of my confidence and success of betting. The worst part is we can't (and I dont want to) explain to her friends and family about this. I think if this was poker success things would be totally different.

I tell them my opinion is professional. They say what do you mean by that? I say my opinion is SUPERIOR. I EXPOSE LIES FOR A LIVING. What LIES? Lies made bu our elemnetary science teachers. Lies from the police department. Lies from Ted Koppel. Lies from Sean Salsibury and Ron Jaworski. Lies from the FDA who is trying to trim the population. Lies from police, defense attorneys, and prosecutors.:youmad:

Everybody knows who I am, they know I am a "Professional".

They know I know the truth. The truth about Ohio State softball for example. I know the truth about Hillary and Guiliani, that they are both abominations, they kill babies. They are both lawyers.

I know the truth about dog food from China. Biggest liar is Peter Gammons. The truth about the war, we need to being going door to door in Detroit and in Jersey City instead of Baghdad.

I know the lies of the atkins diet. I know doctors know nothing about physical health. I know police know nothing about mental health. I know, trust me I know. I know what a gyro ball was 20 years ago. I know the diffrence between green clay and red clay. This is the country where people draft Ely Manning 1st overall. You think I give a RATSASS what these LYING SCUMBAGS think of my job?:puppy:

Ice,

It won't gain acceptance. Poker has only gained acceptance b/c of ESPN and the hole cam. Nothing can equate to that in sports. Old Dirty's post is another reason. You can study and come up with systems or betting methods all you want, but unless someone actually understands what you are doing, they won't see it as a skill.

If I were you, I wouldn't give a shit about the general public or anyone else. Actually, that holds true for most aspects of life. If you are confident in what you do, do it and the results will speak for themselves.

Your father, however, is someone whose opinion I am sure you want to change at least to the point he doesn't think you have a problem. In life there are people's opinions' that matter to you (wife, friends, family, whoever) and those are the ones that should matter, not whether or not society at large or your wife's friends' douchebag husbands think.

You could go into great detail about how disciplined you are etc and it won't matter.
There is a large segment of society that thinks trying to make money via the bounce of a ball is impossible and a degenerate activity.
Don't waste your breath.

hopefully the opinion of sports has risin if only slightly. Every chance you get try and explain (if they are a stock market investor); that sports is about keeping records and following trends, much like their stock investments; only it requires a lot more work!

Ice, i agree for the most part with your statements..... the comparison between poker and sports betting was pretty much spot on.......... as you probably know, i own a convenience store........ i sometimes try and tell people (friends, family, customers) about this...... very, very few understand........ i present a good enough case that most realize it can be profitable but very few are interested...... my wife doesnt understand it or does she care to even discuss it.......

ive come to the conclusion that i can make long term money from this and that really is all that matters.......

I doubt in any profession, there is some easy or guaranteed path to success. Doctors, lawyers, on and on have had failures in careers. Now no doubt they are ahead of the curve when it comes to the "road paved for success". Sports gamblers, even one as small time as I see that you must maintain discipline and keep detailed notes. What IS hard to accept is why the public at large doesn't seem to quite get it.
I know NOTHING about the stock market, but to have winners don't you need loosers?

Do not try to talk to the pilgrims about your gambling thing. They might nod and say "Oh yeah, really"? ,but inside, they are looking at you like you probably look at a junkie or homeless guy. Keep it to yourself. Even what you may perceive as smart people, are dumb as rocks when it comes to sports betting.

beg to differ--yet I DO see your point. Those that gamble ( they call it "play-invest" ) in the market ; that have done so for a long period of time; are much more likely to get it --than the "new rich"!

it is still nowhere near accepted
