Do you believe baseball players who come over from Japan should be able to win Rookie-of-the-Year awards?

No, except that a precedent has already been established. But you know this could just keep happening year in year out. Its a shame when an all-American kid like Rocco gets the shaft.

I think they should.. after all the award is for MLB Rookies.

However, I care a lot less who wins it now.

Well, some people believe that Ichiro and Matsui were already grizzled veterans in the Japanese leagues and that they shouldn't be allowed to compete for ROOKIE honors with kids who PURE rookies. Just a thought!

I believe they were Grizzled veterans too... of Japanese Baseball. That doesn't make them ineligable. It just makes winning the award sort of a gimmie. Kind of like Division 1 teams scheduling 1-AA opponents. The wins count in the standings, just no one gets all that excited about it. Its part of life.

Being that they are verternas of another professional league should nulify them for any rookie awards IMO. The Japanese and Korean leauges are the #2 and #3 baseball markets in the world, with stiff competition. Yes, they are new to MLB, but they are already professional ball players.

Just looked Wild Bill and I got part 3 or 4. No hurry for the other one because Nover has also got an article due. Did you happen to see the Red Wings beat the Kings tonight with 1 second remaining in the game?

Isn't there an age limit in the NFL for rookie of the year? Why shouldn't there be one for MLB?

I agree that if a player comes from Japan that they should not be considered for rookie of the year if they have played a certain amount of games. While the Japanese leagues may be at the level of AAA, some of the players who have played there for years are at the Major League level.

There are major league level players at all levels of the minors, just not deemed "ready" for the majors. Its no different in Japan, there are a small minority of MLB quality players facing AAA or AA level competition. Granted playing until late 20's or early 30's before hitting the big leagues helps a bit in terms of maturity or consistency, but why hold that against them?

I have no problem with it. If they are the best, then they are the best. i would hate to win the award knowing there was a better player, but he was not eligible.

How about this for a parallel idea then. Should a player from the Canadian Football League be allowed to be rookie of the year in the NFL during his first season, even though he had played 5 or so years in Canada?
