We wouldn’t survive without it.
On Friday, celebrating National Poetry Month at the White House with poet laureate Elizabeth Alexander, who read a poem at his 2009 inauguration, President Obama made sure everyone knew what a sensitive, gentle soul he was:
"If we didn’t have poetry, this would be a pretty barren world," says Pres Obama. "It’s not clear that we would survive without poetry."
And…
"Poetry matters, it gives shape and texture and depth and meaning to our lives.
Obama has tried his hand at poetry himself; as a 19-year-old at Occidental College in 1982 he had two of his magnum opuses published in the Spring 1982 issue of Occidental’s literary magazine, Feast. One was entitled “Underground,” and featured apes that eat figs:
They are so asinine that I can’t bring myself to post them.
