I guess my motive is both to add to the enjoyment of the game and then of course to try and get back what I lost on that enjoyment.
Many times I've dropped 100 on the Eagles opponent that way if the Eagles win I'm happy for the win and if they lose I don't feel as bad picking up $100.
Yes I am emotionally tied to the Eagles and that is definitely a handicap.
Here's an example of that emotion being a problem. Week 2 Eagles looked good in opener and they were giving SD 7. I knew that was way off. I knew the Eagles were weak in pass defense and all week I told anyone that would listen SD was a gift and 7 points to boot. I was prepared to heavy up on SD (lock of the year heavy) but after a week of hearing how good the new Eagles were I bought in.
More because I wanted the Eagles to be that good.
So not only did I miss out on a big payday I actually lost money on a game I should have cleaned up on.

I make money working, I gamble for entertainment purposes with the goal of making money
I tend to lose more often than I win, especially at craps, but I usually have a few great days and / or runs a year which makes it fun

As for the question at hand.... Sure I'm a Fan of the Yankees, Nets and Jets... But when it comes down to Game Day... I am a Fan of Nobody. I've bet against All of the above teams at one time or another.
So if you are gambling to make Money... you should be a Fan of No one. Unless of course you are gambling for Entertainment purposes.
