My personal belief is that having played any sport while useful in understanding the game has little to do with how successful or unsuccessful you will be in both handicapping the sport or, more importantly, ultimately showing a long term profit in this business. In fact, one could argue that having played the game could actually unduly influence how one looks at the game. In other words, instead of viewing the game objectively and without bias, one actually views the game from a more narrow perspective based on their own experience in the sport rather then focus on a wider view of the game. Your thoughts are welcomed.

I have a strong feeling the mass majority have no better success, but there are a few I'm sure.

Good post

Absolutely no correlation between having participated in sports and being successful in betting on them.

I disagree...........It is a huge advantage to some that have played and know the game well. I would break it down with similarities to NBA coaches for example. There are just some players/ Ex-players that are very bright and know the game, that everyone around them knows will eventually be a head coach in the league. Sounds strange I know, but this is how I would compare it.

I disagree. The only thing Ken has ever played is with himself, and he's successful year in and out.

Most football players have the "never say die/never give up" attitude and that's not good for gambling; it's the kind of thinking that leads one to chase.

No way...of course there are exceptions, but overall its probably a negative...

Serious athletes are use to success, gambling is a marathon, it takes a long time for most to realize this....I would have loved to have booked Pete Rose's action, if the dead beat would have paid!

I would think most ex-athletes would chase probably more so than avg joe gambler...

Feel it has helped me quite a bit.

I think more so in basketball than football however.

Learned what it was like to play in certain hostile environments on the road............the crowd was much more of a factor in baskets than football or baseball to me as a player.

I agree Fish, same here. If you have played the game and are very knowledeable & can determine talent and matchup advantages, then it makes a huge difference when capping games, especially with basketball as you said. I know it's just hard for some to understand though........

Hardly.

Pigskins have funny bounces it seems.

Pucks are redirected off skates it seems.

Homeruns are missed by 1/8 of an inch at 95mph it seems.

Adding, without the above, a book would be something you read only. And the worst of it, no Rx... :( :)
