Totals always have been the biggest challenge for the oddsmakers (and the handicappers); There are so many unknown factors that need to be evaluated with weather and injuries being the least of it (weather forecasting has become more accurate now days with longer-range capabilities often right on target).
The unknowns are
the culprits....Players health (24 hour flu bugs/food poisoning, hang-overs, "screwing" until the wee-hours on Friday nights of home games, family issues at home, and, of course, girl-friend problems); These are just a few of the components that line-makers can't get a handle on resulting in the totals numbers being skewed. Often they are arrived at using past stats as the determining factor......(opportunities abound).

It takes just a little bit of imagination to research a team's games and come up with some pretty solid angles.
For example, Stanford racked up a whole lot of zeros in points allowed in 3rd quarters and not much in 4th quarters.
The way to see this clearly is to list the team's points allowed in game after game by quarter. I swear you'll be
surprised at what turns up when you look at scores and stats that way. (or similar)
I remember hitting Team Totals by half when Oregon was involved. They continuously outpointed even the most
liberal team totals lines. Finally most books quit offering team total wagers in Oregon games.
Lets say Oregon is favored by 19 points at Cal. The game total would be about 61 which is to say that between
the Game total and Side, a predicted score of 40-21 is the score that fits both numbers. Oregon's first half total
would normally be about 21 according to their predicted final score. It was known that Oregon would come out
strong to start games so their first half team total would get jacked up to about 24 on the betting line. In reality
they'd nearly cover the first half TT by the end of the first quarter and glide into an over for the 1st half typically
scoring 35 points or more. The linemaker would keep padding the first half TT more and more until it hit 33 points
and still lost nearly every week. It was pathetic to see how the lines put TT's in an impossible way for the books.
Teams have a way of playing to their potential certain ways. Stanford didn't give up more than a TD in most of
the 2nd halves of almost every game. (I'm not sure of exactly which half or which quarter was the correct one,
but it happened. Unfortunately memory lapses can come with age.)
See what I mean. Just list the game scores by quarter but just one quarter per column (total 4 columns of course)
Then look at the columns. Look at 2 of the columns to get a sense of a likely pattern by half. You will be amazed
at the trends that turn up.
