Hello fellow degenerates, I am 100 percent sure someone here will have a solution. Basically, its football season, I have a big screen HDTV ready and no HD. :puppy:

I have Direct TV and currently only have a DVR. My plan is too move the DVR into the bedroom and hook a HD box to the big screen. However, I refuse to pay 100 bucks to RENT an HD box from direct when I know my cable company gives them for free (to use). Anyone got some tips on how to get them to give me an HD box (to use, not keep). I see all their adds and shit and know its not a big deal for them to give them out, guy I talked to on the phone was kind of a prick though

honestly, I dont think there is a way to get ANYTHING from Directv for free..Direct leases all their receivers these days from what I've read..you own the box, but they charge extra for use of the service. I've tried to get them to upgrade me before to a HD DVR for a reduced cost...no go.

One thing to keep in mind though in defense of directv..if you dont already have the HD receiver on your dish, the $100 covers the cost of a tech coming out and installing it..assuming that the HD signal requires a re wire too on most set ups.

If you already have the HD receiver on your dish..just buy a used receiver off of ebay..and then add the service. It does suck that cable co's give HD free, but honestly I dropped Time Warner here a year ago and havent looked back since..better service, had constant probs with my DVR box with them and my bill is now slightly lower. What channels are you looking for HD..always have the option of using both cable/direct..just get the bare min for cable and drop locals from your Direct..I think Direct charges like $6 a month for local channels..add the $10 you would have paid for HD and the $100 for a new box with them and thats a savings of $24 a month if you break it out over a year..local cable here offers base HD for $29 a month, free box and install (and even 3mo's of one premium movie channel).

Since we have a Direct TV help thread open. I just had DTV hooked up. About once an hour, the closed caption (written text of what is being said) appears on my TV. Has anyone else had this problem?
