Intercepted and he's on his knees. Carolina player hits the ball out of his hands through the endzone. Doesn't get touched down.

Isn't that a safety?

EF I believe you are correct on a technical rulebook level. The player was not contacted. However the refs can overrule this by deeming the intercepting player as "giving himself up" (taking knee with no intent to advance the ball) after the interception, thus the play is dead. Had the player got up and moved forward and then the ball got batted out of the endzone it would have been ruled a touchback. Wait who am I idding? These refs have conferences after every play and then do whatever they want.

To be a safety first the ball has to at one point be out of the endzone

Corrrect about giving yourself up in the end zone.

Also, if you are on one knee as soon as you are touched the player is down. Not sure, but if you hit the ball while a player is down, is he ruled down or a fumble? Not sure.

What I don't remember is if he took a knee? Anyone know?

From what I've seen a player can give himself up in any part of the field. I've seen it on interceptions at the end of games where he falls to the ground, the play is then over.

That was the weird part. Grimes caught the ball then kind of crouched a bit but I can't remember if he took a knee or not. Then the ball was punched out of the back of the EZ.
