6 more this weekend, and now Spain withdrawing its 1,400 troops ASAP...

Did anyone believe the U.S. was going to lose this many? This is much worse than I thought, and there is no end in sight..

Very sad indeed

I thought there would be more than this killed in the first few weeks. In fact, CNN's top military analyst, General Barry McCaffrey, predicted that the US would lose between 2500 and 5000 taking control of Baghdad last April.

I agree with Floyd. I thought that there would have been extremely heavy casualties in the beginning, but am surprised of the current situation. I just hope that all of this mayhem ends come the June 30 deadline.

Not just the casulaties, but did anyone expect 13 months after the war started that there would be over 140,000 or so troops there with no realistic dimunition in sight? That's just as bad. The troops are way overextended and are staying way longer than they were told. They're good people being abused for no good reason. It's very sad. Yet they will continue to do as they are told honorably. Bravo to the troops.

Floyd if you backed a war where 2500 to 5000 US soldiers would be killed just taking over Baghdad for Iragi freedom you are really a chickenhawk.

GW did not think this would be dragging on with deaths recorded weekly this late.

I guarantee it

Polls in the NY Times were using the number 5000-10000 in poll questions before the war...To put into perspective...700 killed in a WEEK was not outside the norm in 1968 in VietN.

I think people would accept higher deaths in the initial take over (like the first weeks) - but a year later to have 10 guys picked off every week is demoralizing - this was supposed to be a quick war - now we are hearing possibly 5 years of troops in Iraq? - and this June 30 deadline is comical - who are we turning over power to? - a couple of locals playing dice on the corner - odds that 1/2 the new government will be assassinated within 30 days are -7750

The UN and the rest of the world are sick of Bush - our troops are not coming home on June 30 - the day we leave the token government gets overthrown and some religous nutcase rises.

Judging by what happened back in the early 90's when we were first over there, and how easy they gave up then, I figured the main army would cave in and give up soon, what would be left would be of the sniper variety....

I honestly thought there would be more car bombings and booby traps set for the coalition forces coming in....easier and safer to park a carload of explosives and wait till a group goes by, and set it off from a safe distance...

....seems like a lot of them over there don't mind being with the explosives when they set them off...

NJSPORTS: Polls in the NY Times were using the number 5000-10000 in poll questions before the war...

BAR: Such polls are directed towards the populace at large and I think you would agree that the vast majority of respondents are not qualified to make such an estimate.

NJ: To put into perspective...700 killed in a WEEK was not outside the norm in 1968 in VietN.

BAR: That's a shaky comparison. It would be more relevant to compare current U.S. casualties to 1961-2 Vietnam. And they were very similar in terms of fatalities. However the current campaign has produced far more overall U.S. casualties (upwards of 20,000 since 3/19/03) than the first two years in Vietnam.
